 Oh sure, Anon! For reference, they’re referring to this scene with Newt pushing Hermann into the elevator after clashing with Raleigh.

First of all, it’s been observed elsewhere that the level of touchy-feeliness between Hermann and Newt is familiar liek woah, I dunno about you but I wouldn’t tolerate a despised colleague manhandling me like that. It speaks to a fairly intimate relationship (more like bickering exes or an “old married couple” than acquaintances). Newt just blithely begins touching Hermann and Hermann’s reaction is barely annoyed by it, and he reacts as if expecting it SO, first there’s that. (A good argument could be made that it was cut because the science boys were being too familiar for their arc of “learning to like each other” at this point.)

But what’s more fascinating to me is that moment in juxtaposition with this one:

“Please excuse him, he’s a Kaiju groupie.”

These scenes back to back show a certain level of very fascinating protectiveness of one another against outsiders. Yes they’re insulting one another, but the tone of the insult is taking note of their qualities and protecting each other from themselves. Hermann is calling him a Kaiju groupie, but he’s also asking the outsider to forgive Newt, points out that it’s a harmless foible, and not to take it personally (and, for example, punch Newt in the face which if someone in that elevator had lost family to Yamarashi he would KINDA DESERVE). 

(Aside: the calling one another “harmless” implication is also interestingly echoed by Newt in Uprising telling Shao that Hermann is harmless, which could be seen as dismissive but could also be read as extremely protective. “Don’t look at him, he’s not dangerous,” he’s saying, distracting the attention of someone who could conceivably be very dangerous to Hermann if she so chose.)

But to go back to what we learn about Newt from that exchange about not saluting:

Update 22 On Hermann’s book, the post it Newt added means “coward”. ALSO! The end is near, and all the saddest will go away soon, keep up with me my friends! Only 22 pages to go and 3 updates.

Like some bullshit website tries to pull a “Gottlieb and Geiszler in gay relationship!!?” overdramatic piece to spread rumors. And so during an interview, the host asks “how do you respond to the rumors that you and your colleague are in a relationship?” and they have to be like “uuhh we’ve been married for 10 years so yes?” and it’s so anticlimactic that even the trashy media can’t spin it.

So now that that’s out, they try to treat them like a couple to cause drama. “So how are you feeling after it came out Dr. Gottlieb told a close friend that he regretted ever marrying you? Is it hard to hear what’s said behind your back?” and Newts like, “Lol, what? I was the one he said that too. I spilled his tea on his sweater.”

So now the media is like ok, they hate each other. And they ask. “So what’s the worst quality in your husband?” hoping to trigger a fight. And Newt answers “You know Hermann could hack into Domino’s system and given us all the pizza points but he doesn’t? He doesn't even have a reason! He just doesn’t want to! Think of the pizza points!” Which leaves the interviewer confused. Hermann just laughs for a straight ten minutes when asked the question.

Some crackpot media site writes an article titled “PPDC Scientists Drift with Kaiju Brain” and it’s treated like the J.F.K’s head just did that theory.

This goes on for several weeks and it’s mostly insults, but then there’s a day where Hermann is cursing him out in German, and says something to the effect of, “That stupid, immature, beautiful son of a bitch. I hope he dies in that Kaiju filth.”

And Newt, across the room, shouts back, “Did you just call me beautiful?”
