I think some people have a tendency to hear "there's a lot of social pressure on adults not to be single" and think it means something like "if you're single some people might think you're weird or assume there's something wrong with you, but as long as you don't prioritise other people's opinions of you that shouldn't pose a substantial problem". So when people talk about the difficulties they face being single they'll respond like "who cares what other people think! Just be single anyway! :)" and it's very well-intentioned but also frustratingly misses the point
Because the reality is that "social pressure" in this case means that our society is structured in a way that makes it more financially and practically difficult to navigate life while being single in very real and substantial ways. The problems posed by this can't be solved by single people just deciding not to care what other people think, solving them would involve working towards restructuring society in a way that actually accommodates us.
And of course, the point here isn't that everyone should go and pair up pronto to make things easier for themselves, or that anyone should stay in a relationship that isn't working or making them happy. But these are real, material problems we're talking about, and dismissing real material problems with "who cares?" is not actually a helpful or actionable response.
