Study shows Millennial Men do not think of women as their equals

I have come to the conclusion that I’m simply too old to enjoy CW series other than Supernatural. They seem to be writing everything else for a teen audience. Well, except maybe for Arrow, but I got tired of that when it started to feel like it was just about how difficult it is to be a rich straight white man (who sometimes fights crime). That one lady with the glasses was a great character, though.

When the path of a man and woman are going to cross, it’s always the woman who’s expected to alter her path to avoid a collision. In addition, women restrict their stride as compared to men, and tend to hunch their shoulders and not initiate or maintain eye contact. So I did this research my friends and I started messing around with this. We found that if you don’t alter your path when walking toward a man, a lot of men will almost run right into you, or bump their shoulder against yours, and then turn and give you this weird look. The weird looks you get are increased if you stand up straight with squared shoulders and take longer strides. I habitually walk this way now, and I continue to get puzzled looks by men who turn around after I pass them and watch me with an uncertain look.

Very few TV series come anywhere near Babylon 5 in terms of willingness to alter the core relationships of its characters and its Shakespearean levels of tragic mistakes, partial redemptions, and inescapable destinies. The character of Ambassador Londo Mollari embodies this in particular. Initially the most ridiculous character on the show, thanks to his bizarre hair and generic science-fiction name, Londo became the show’s soul with time, and actor Peter Jurasik got into the character quickly, devouring scenery and playing up Londo’s humor and flaws, even in the worst early episodes. Meanwhile, his rival, G’Kar, started as a cartoon villain, slowly acquiring depth before making some dramatic changes. The story led these two characters to trade places: The aggressor became the victim; the victim transcended pain; rivalry became friendship. All of this was foreshadowed, surprising, and explicable.

When I was a freshman, my sister was in eighth grade. There was a boy in two of her periods who would ask her out every single day. (Third and seventh period, if I remember correctly.) All day during third and seventh she would repeatedly tell him no. She didn’t beat around the bush, she didn’t lie and say she was taken—she just said no.

You branded yourself as “sophisticated” and “magnificent,” and all the men by your side, shouting “men’s rights! men’s rights!” labelled you as a hero after you died. Because you spent so much money, didn’t you, on trying to get a girl. Your sunglasses were $300, your car a BMW, your bank account drained from how-to books on “getting out of the friend zone” and being a “nice guy” but still, girls chose to walk alone rather than stand by you. You were so sick of not getting what you rightfully deserved. SLUT, you wanted to say, you did not let me sleep with you. SLUT, why are you walking with him? SLUT, I spent thousands trying to impress you, so where’s my reward? SLUT, I am taking what you refuse to give me. SLUT, this is my retribution. SLUT, I’ll take this gun away from your head if you just give me a chance. SLUT, I’m a nice guy I’m a nice guy I’m a NICE GUY- keep telling me “no” if you want to die. Tell me, Elliot Rodger, did you get what you wanted? Did you die the “true alpha male” you hoped to be? You wanted to take a girl on a date, but instead you put six of them in their graves. Tell me, how many like you are still alive? Tell me, how long will they praise you? Tell me, how many times were you validated by others who told you to take what no woman would give you alive? These are not things you thought up yourself. This is not simply an effect of mental illness. These are things we forget to teach. This is an effect of misogyny in our society. To this day, we see women as objects, not human beings. A woman’s life only has worth if she says “yes” to all men’s advances. And her voice will be taken, brutally shot out of her, if she dare use it to say “no.” How many bodies must lie dead and cold before we see that this is not an isolated incident? This is misogyny. This is our society. This is what we teach.

Sexuality, too, is fluid, and many people seem to struggle with this, to the point of being actively repulsed and confused by the idea that sexual orientation does not necessarily remain consistent throughout someone’s life. This attitude is harmful for those who do experience shifts in their sexual orientations, but it also stifles conversation and exploration, as people who may be confused about their sexuality who receive this kind of messaging may experience harm that takes years to undo—and in some cases, they may never recover, because they are never given an opportunity to learn who they are and be themselves. Take, for example, the heterosexual woman who later develops an attraction to women, and begins to identify as bisexual or lesbian. She may have experienced this attraction throughout her life and not picked up on it—perhaps she didn’t meet the right woman, or she was living in a repressive environment where homosexuality was not accepted. Or maybe her sexual orientation actively shifted. The attitudes of those around her will be dismissive and unpleasant, as people attempt to erase both her past as a heterosexual and her present as a gay or bi woman. Though her sexuality has shifted, she remains fundamentally the same woman. Her past history doesn’t magically vanish, and she may even look back on it with fondness or gratitude for the relationships she had. Likewise, people may move through other sexual orientations depending on circumstances, their current stage of life, and other factors; the asexual who later realizes he’s gay, the lesbian woman who develops a bisexual attraction.
