The adaptation of how Obelix fell in the potion was fun, and I think it was interesting that they changed it so Obelix was being bullied by Cassius. I really thought it would be brought up again later though, especially when Obelix was sent out to fight him. While watching it I also questioned why of all the known ingredients for the magic potion they could’ve referenced here, they used the strawberries and lobster which aren’t even technically needed. I guess it makes sense since they’re both added for taste and Obelix was adding them for taste. Anyway, the end of the episode with Getafix saying they’ll only get the potion when the village is under attack panning to them all lined up to getting potion while it’s under attack? Beautiful. Peak cinema IMO.

In terms of new characters, I honestly have no strong opinions on Metadata & Fastandfurious. They were just kinda there to me. I thought Caesar’s mom constantly comparing him to Pompey was a fun running gag though. Apothika wasn’t around much but I thought she was really entertaining too. Having a gothic druid hold a couples counseling session for Asterix & Obelix cracked me the hell up. And I love that she actually got her memory back at the end. I always felt a bit sad nobody helped Psychoanalytix in the book.

Getafix getting amnesia was adapted… alright I guess. The menhir throwing & subsequent arguing was all pretty standard stuff. It’s just that getting Pocoyod came incredibly out of left field to me. Don’t get me wrong I laughed, but most of the impact was from me not expecting it. Don’t think it’ll hold up super well on rewatches, and definitely isn’t as iconic as Zonked was.

I actually really enjoyed the sportscasters for the Big Fight event & the red carpet moment. It felt like a perfectly reasonable modernization & upscale of the already existing fair that was thrown for the event in the book. It was definitely intended to be a larger scale event so it made sense. The sculptors not getting to finish their busts made me laugh, and I thought Caesar taking time to pose for a mosaic later was really funny in a similar vein (maybe played just sliiiiightly too long for my own pacing preferences though). That said, what the heck happened to Cleopatra? She just walked the carpet and disappeared? Sad

I think it was a little ridiculous that they replaced Vitalstatistix in the fight with Obelix. It didn’t really add anything (okay it added to the character arc for Obelix they kinda forced into the series). Fighting over who should be replacement chief was funny, but again, what was the point? It wasn’t even a proper fish fight! Also they straight up lied to Obelix when they said he wouldn’t have to make speeches. That’s kind of non-negotiable as a leader and they should’ve been up front about it. The fight would’ve been more entertaining seeing Vitalstatistix run around the ring buying time than Obelix fainting from his fear of public speaking as the climax of his own character arc. Which I don’t think was even all that interesting or funny to warrant being added in the first place. I don’t think Asterix needed to be banished to have a “the last indomitable gaul” moment either. The rollercoaster sword fight was cool though.
