Happy birthday, Verso 💓🎂
Clea and og Verso mods 🫶
Obsessed with their dynamic. What the hell is up with these two
I got one of my best friends for the 2025 Secret Santa exchange. Her prompt was really complex and cool. I hope I did it justice. @thewritersdidit @clairobscursecretsanta
The Disaster Expedition and How They Sleep
Gustave
Usually sleeps on his back or side.
If Maelle had a nightmare, he’d let her curl up next to him without a word. Just wordlessly open his arm and rub her back until she drifted off again.
Sometimes falls asleep with his arm still attached (which Lune will usually remove for him).
Always says “Goodnight, team,” even if they’re all passed out already.
Sleeps close to Maelle but never smothers her. If she wants to get closer, she can.
Snores but not obnoxiously. Maelle finds it comforting.
Always ends up cold because he gives everyone else his blankets if they want them. He never complains.
Usually falls asleep first. If he’s not actively being spoken to, he’s gone in five minutes flat. Quiet, warm, dad-asleep.
Classic “dad-who-slept-on-the-couch” energy when he wakes up.
Lune
Sleeps on her back most nights. (“Aren’t you afraid of sleep paralysis??” “No??? Should I be??”)
Usually doesn’t move at all. You’d think she was a corpse.
VERY light sleeper.
Sleeps with her bra on.
Probably has a dream journal lmao
If she has bad dreams, she doesn't mention them. She just gets up and works harder that day.
Pretends her mind quiets at night. It doesn’t. She lies awake more often than she admits, thinking about probabilities and consequences and people she wants to save.
One of the last to fall asleep. If people are still chatting, she can’t go to bed because she’ll get FOMO.
Usually the first to wake up.
Does morning stretches.
Elegant morning ghoul. Moves slow, gracefully.
Nobody is allowed to talk to her until thirty minutes after she wakes up.
Startlingly petty in the morning.
Sciel
SPRAWLS. EVERYWHERE.
Sleeps with her bra off. She does not care. (“What if we’re attacked??” “They’re a distraction.” “FOR THE NEVRONS??”)
SO warm.
Loves snuggling, so she doesn’t mind if someone else (usually Maelle) lays close to her.
Rests easier with people nearby. If they’re separated, she lays awake worrying. The first few nights at the Gestral village, before reuniting with the others, was rough because of this.
After Gustave died, she’s usually the one Maelle goes to sleep with when she’s scared or has had a nightmare.
Talks in her sleep. It’s usually just incomprehensible mumbles.
The ultimate blanket thief. And then kicks them all off because she’s hot.
Once got up to pee, tripped and fell over Monoco, face-planted, and just fell asleep like that.
After long battles, she always sleeps closest to Maelle. Just in case the girl wakes up in a panic. She won’t say it aloud, but she likes being the first one Maelle sees.
Always groggy in the morning.
Maelle
Curls up into a little ball. She can make herself VERY small.
On rare nights when she feels safe and unguarded, she starfishes.
Has frequent nightmares, but she’s (mostly) able to not wake up screaming anymore so she won’t disturb the others.
Sleepwalks. Once woke up in the middle of a river. All she can remember of the dream she was having was being in a burning room, then the fire going out suddenly…
Will instinctively cling in her sleep. Like a little sloth.
Snores softly, but only when she’s really tired. It’s more like a warm, whuffling noise. Like a snuffly piglet.
Clings to the blanket with surprising strength. If she’s shivering, good luck getting it back.
Before the funeral, she slept with Gustave’s arm held against her chest like a stuffed animal. It was a gut-wrenching sight for the others.
Cries in her sleep sometimes.
Also cries herself to sleep sometimes.
Wakes up with HORRIFIC bedhead.
Very quiet in the mornings, even more than usual. Stays bundled up until she’s mentally booted up for the day.
Verso
Sleeps on his side but will also sleep propped up against a tree.
Usually the last to fall asleep.
If someone touches him in his sleep, he’ll wake up swinging—hard. The only exception is Maelle. She can nudge him, and he’ll just blink blearily and grunt.
Snores when he’s REALLY tired. And it is LOUD.
Sleep-frowns.
NOT a morning person AT ALL.
Don’t touch him. Don’t look at him. Maelle is the only one allowed to poke him awake without consequences. Monoco is usually the one who will wake him up.
Monoco
Curls up when he sleeps. Or lays on his back.
Usually sleeps away from the others. Because he once rolled onto Lune and almost crushed her.
Snores like an old dog.
Noco would sleep buried in his mane. After Noco dies, Monoco either cradles his jar or sleeps curled around it protectively.
Doesn’t really dream.
Maelle once bumped into him while sleepwalking, and he just shuffled her back toward her bed like a sheepdog.
If anyone tries to wake him early, he grumbles like a bear.
Shifts very slowly in his sleep. Rolls over like a log. If you hear creaking, it’s him.

Coe33 act3 spoilers!
Painted Verso telling Aline to stop painting is actually Aline's own voice telling her to stop painting.
It's why Aline seems to easily accept that the Canvas is gone in Verso's ending.
Of course this is debatable - can a god give it's creation free will? I'm not a philosopher, but as a writer my thoughts do seem to affect my creations, whether the decision's made intentionally or not. I expect it happens to artists, too.
Coe33 act3 spoilers!
Who drew the Dessendre family portrait?
All the drawings in the manor are drawn by a Dessendre - that must include the family portrait.
Also, you can find the copy within the Canvas. By this I mean both locations. Real Verso's Canvas, and the location called "The Canvas". To reduce confusion, I will refer the latter "The Canvas Location"- TCL for short.
Now, I thought that meant Verso drew the family portrait. It's literally in his canvas.
But how did he draw himself? Maybe someone helped him?
Then I remembered that faded woman at the end of the cliff, right behind the family portrait canvad in TCL. The symbolism matches the Paintress. So maybe Aline drew with him?
However, the faded people all have different heights. What I remember is being freshly into act 3, going to TCL, checking that they are different people, and being confused why Sandfall made a place like this. Faded people, with such melancholic music and background?
You probably see where I'm getting to, and that's right - the Dessendre's drew the family portrait together. That's why it's depicted as such a memorable place. It's the last place that they were as a whole. Well, at least within the Canvas.
There are some questions left - did the faded woman on the cliff form after Verso's death? Or is it before, since the faded people do seem to be looking at her(this part I'm not sure whether my memory is right, will have to check later). Maybe they're simply looking at the family portrait, drawing the other family members.
And why is TCL called "The Canvas"?
Feel free to leave a thought!
Also. There. We already knew it. But lo. Maybe the sight of actual fire will help.
This is the first vision in the Monolith. It may have been difficult for some to tell with the black/white filter on. With the new photomode, we can remove that. It's fire. Aline was also trapped in the manor during the fire/was painting when it happened.
Also, paraphrased but Maelle does say "We're in her memories." If we take every other flashback in the Monolith at face value, by the same principle, this one also happened as we see.
This take on the scene was interesting! I thought it showed Aline in the present. Her drawing the Canvas in order to block out the fire - a definite trauma response. It's also the first memory we see of Aline, so it sets the mood for the next memories.
However, reading the post, I think it can mean both. Both the stuck version in the present, and during the fire. She felt stuck during the fire - wanting to save her family but not even able to save herself. Now, she's immovable from the canvas.
I have dream about this vision for days now everyone has to see it too
Baby Verso my beloved

Question on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. (Spoilers from act 3!)
How different would Painted Verso and Real Verso be?
Painted Verso didn't save Alicia from the fire. Or couldn't he? I wonder how Aline influenced the canvas to stop him from death; did she change Verso's personality, or the circumstances of the fire?
Feel free to comment or reblog!
Thx for all the replies! Spoilers for the ending and thank you update on the next part.
While reading the replies, I also remembered that there's another person drawing Verso.
How much would Child Verso draw Painted Verso? The Canvas clearly needed him to exist.
However, during the game, you can see Child Verso lamenting Clea's creations.(see: young boy in Yellow Harvest)
Does this mean Child Verso has no say at all? Is he just a medium for painting? Child Verso also appears if you beat Osquio.(Verso's Drafts boss. Jump to around 6 mins if you want to see Child Verso)
Conclusion: Child Verso gets a say in his own creations, the ones he drew when he was alive.
The only catch is - how did Verso get his memories? Even Aline wouldn't know what Real Verso did at Verso's Drafts, yet Painted Verso seems to get nostalgia from the place. Is Painted Verso the one exception?
If you got better theories, please help me.(Monoco pun intended)

ever since Verso's drafts dropped i've been having a lot of thoughts and feelings about it and the fragment of Verso's soul and and just,,,, AUGHGHHGHHHHH yeah.
i've just had a terrible thought and want to hurt others as well: i always wondered why Alicia was Gommaged with red petals, instead of Aline's white.
so what if Aline didn't paint her. in her fanfic Alicia DID DIE. AND ONLY RENOIR CARED ENOUGH TO PAINT HER
that also explains why she is like that -- black and white, speaking weirdly, and the less active in the family by far. Renoir is just less skilled than Aline and can't paint literal people as well as her
as to why,, I think Renoir didn't want to insult his girl - if he painted her healthy and whole, it's like he didn't love her in her current state. but he did. but to leave the family as it was - with Alicia dead and forgotten - also felt wrong. and so a sad Alicia was born
a great video was made on the topic and the authors put it better then i can!! a great watch honestly and a lot of good points
however i still wanna push my 'Renoir is less skilled than Aline' agenda. Lord Khury makes an observation that p!Alicica talks nothing like Maelle and more Renoir-eske, and suggests it was intended by Renoir to push Aline back to reality. HOWEVER, what if he just. wasn't able to put his own personality away to paint an exact copy of his daughter. and so, his style, the parables and metaphors, are still present.
unlike Aline, who's gone mad (=lost herself) to draw Verso -- there's nothing to put aside if you're a self-proclaimed hollow vessel. (and she also could use piece of og!Verso's soul trapped inside the Canvas but that's more of a headcanon than a theory)
i like both interpretations though, and they don't contradict each other! nice video!
*New update(12.2) spoilers ahead, especially for a new location!
I am going through Verso's Drafts rn, and I'm so happy and anxious at the same time. Like, what do you mean there's a birthday party cake. The game indicated the fire happened at Alicia's birthday party? I'm expecting this game to show me Verso spending time at the Canvas one last time right before his death(aka Alicia's party), but this is COE33, they thwart my predictions somehow.
SOS healing tint is diabolical. Wish real Verso had that

Dear Sandfall.
Was Verso's Esquie clothing Ben Starr's idea?
