fingers  drumming  against  soft  cloth  as  he  tried  to  formulate  words  to  speak  to  her.  had  it  always  been  so  tense  speaking  to  his  own  sister?  there  was  once  a  world  where  it  was  the  two  of  them  against  the  world  and  now  dexter  couldn't  tell  you  a  single  thing  about  her  life.  broken  thoughts  and  unspoken  words  that  normally  would  tumble  out  of  his  mouth  but  instead  what  came  out  sound  less  like  ‘  i’m  sorry  '  and  more  like  a childhood memory.  “  i  bet  you  i  can  still  make  a  better  sandcastle  than  you.  ”

it  seemed  as  though  things  couldn't  get  out  of  hand  anymore  than  they  already  were.  the  brunch  seemed  to  go  over  as  cutesy  as  the  couple  deserved  but  now  that  everyone  moved  on  from  brunch  dexter's  eyes  were  laser  focused  on  an  elderly  woman,  who  seemed  to  keep  the  champagne  flowing  and  was  now  dancing  like  no  one  was  watching.  “  when  is  it  appropriate  for  us  to  step  in  and  take  the  champagne  away?  ” 

the  match  finally  came  to  a  close  and  dexter  was  ducking  under  the  net  to  grab  a  water  bottle  while  the  rest  of  the  players  moved  to  converse.  a  few  quick  sips  before  he  turned  his  attention  to  one  of  the  members  of  the  opposite  team.     “  i'm  pretty  sure  you  all  knocked  the  braincells  in  my  head  loose  on  that  last  one.  much  needed  improvements  all  around.  ”

“  jessa,  good  thing  you're  here,  ”  dex  greeted  her  while  jogging  up  to  get  closer.  the  youngest  ellington  always  welcomed  around  him  and  he  hoped  for  his  sake  she  was  able  to  save  his  sanity.  “  they  were  trying  to  teach  me  how  to  play  tennis,  which  i'm  doing  poorly  at.  care  to  save  me  from  myself?  ”

sunshine  baking  above  and  the  salty  sea  air  marking  the  beginning  of  what  maggie  would  end  up  ranking  the  second  best  part  of  the  trip  to  greece.  bronzing  already  tawny  skin,  a  thick  blanket  laid  out  further  away  from  the  commotion  of  beach  goers  with  a  book  open  in  front  of  her  while  she  let  her  back  absorb  the  rays.  her  eyes  flickered  up  out  of  curiosity  when  a  small  shadow  moved  over  the  words,  the  smile  growing  as  she  noticed  who  it  was.  “  hey  neighbor,  ”  her  newest  acquaintance  found  in  the  form  of  the  person  rooming  next  to  her.  “  did  you  settle  in  last  night  alright?  ”

stars  twinkling  against  the  crystal  clear  surface  of  the  ocean,  crackling  fire  between  her  and  the  waves.  yet,  her  mind  wasn't  able  to  stay  on  the  atmosphere  for  too  long  before  the  cackling  of  others  around  the  fire  caught  her  attention.  “  think  they'll  end  up  burning  their  eyebrows  off  if  they  keep  playing  with  the  fire?  ”

“  do  you  ever  wonder  who  decided  to  take  this  random  piece  of  fruit  and  eat  it?  or  do  you  think  they  had  like  in  medieval  times  for  royalty?  ”  fork  stabbing  into  an  unfamiliar  fruit  before  hoisted  into  the  air  for  inspection,  eyes  narrowed  as  she  cataloged  everything  before  tasting  the  fruit  out  of  pure  curiosity.

“  i  think  i  want  to  make  a  bracelet  or  a  necklace  or  something  with  it.  oh!  or  maybe  we  could  make  some  sort  of  art  piece  with  them?  ”  slow  and  steady  strides  down  the  beach,  eagerness  to  enjoy  the  summer  sun  threatening  to  swallow  her  whole.  after  the  long  journey,  a  simple  task  welcomed  before  the  summer  bled  into  a  whirlwind  of  wedding  inspired  events. 

“  i  cannot  believe  you've  convinced  me  to  do  this,  ”  words  quickly  exiting  as  hands  moved  with  precision  to  capture  dark  locks  in  a  haphazardous  messy  knot  on  the  top  of  her  head, a necessary evil if paddleboarding was the activity they decided upon.  “  we're  in  greece,  do  you  know  what  is  in  greek waters?  sirens.  and  they're  not  pretty  like  the  fairytales  would  lead  you  to  believe.  ”

when  it  seemed  as  though  everyone  was  winding  down  and  people  began  disappearing  to  take  advantage  of  all  the  different  activities  being  offered  to  the  guests,  her  feet  seemed  to  travel  towards  the  beach  with  a  proffered  glass  in  hand,  a  name  she  was  almost  worried  she  couldn't  pronounce,  and  stretched  her  legs  out  in  front  of  her.  “  is  the  name  of  this  french?  i'm  trying  to  pinpoint  it  but  french  is  usually  the  more  romantic  option  for  wine.  ”

in  a  seemingly  never  ending  circle,  the  gardens  looked  right  out  of  a  fairytale  for  the  fairytale  romance  unfolding  all  around  them.  bride  and  groom  sickeningly  in  love  and  their  venue  for  the  first  of  many  told  the  story  of  it  all,  everything  picturesque.  what  other  mysteries  were  kept  hidden  within  the  greenery.  “ how  long  these gardens  have  been  around?  ”

“  i'm  going  to  remember  to  thank  my  local  bartenders  for  all  the  effort  they  put  into  their  art,  ”  a  vow  solemnly  spoken  aloud  with  sincere  seriousness. the amount of time and effort put into a cocktail that was sure to make even the most stoic person wince.  “  i'm  pretty  sure  we  could  start  a  small  house  fire  with  my  concoction.  want  to  try  it?  it's  a  sure  fire  way  to  start  the  festivities.  ”
