I just saw a post shaming people for having autistic Sansa Stark headcanons. As an autistic myself, I would like to say it’s okay to headcanon whoever the hell you want as autistic. Arya having some autistic tendencies does not invalidate Sansa’s character. Sansa definitely has a lot of traits that are common in autistism spectrum girls. Also it’s nice when people headcanon likeable characters as autistic rather than just villains. 

Looking at Sansa through this light I think actually sheds a lot of light on who she is, and why she acts the way she does:

Sansa is serious and matter-of-fact in nature. She constantly corrects her siblings about things. Including insisting on referring to Jon as her bastard half-brother. Everyone sees it as mean but,  he is.

She often gets lost in her own thoughts and checks out. She’s an incredibly introspective person. 

She sees the complexity of things and doesn’t simplify them. This often leads to indecision and being able to empathize with people who she is scared of or who have caused her harm.

She is drawn to poetry and fictional stories, and escapes into them, because she doesn’t like her reality. 

Many autistic people feel like they’re following a script when they’re interacting with others and resent when that script is broken. As such, they don’t understand real people but rather archetypes and likes when people fit nicely into their place in life, so they know how to deal with them. Think Abed on Community. Autistic people are known for “scripting” their interactions with others. 

When this is broken, she feels lost. “Their dreams were full of songs and stories, the way hers had been before Joffrey cut her fathers head off. Sansa pitied them. Sansa envied them.”

She feels happier when she knows Jon will be a Black Knight at the wall, because in her mind she can cast him in a good role in the internal world she has set up for herself. He is no longer the bad bastard threat, but a valiant brother of the night’s watch.

Once she realizes the world has changed, she is very good at pretending to love Joffrey and to play that part. 

Sansa is incredibly innocent and naive. Because of this, she is taken advantage of again and again. Young girls with asperger’s syndrome are some of the most likely and easiest to abuse, often because they don’t know they should tell anyone, or don’t know how. 

 She did not try to betray Ned. She thought Cersei and Joffrey were on her side. She didn’t understand she was being manipulated by them. 

She was manipulated by Dontos, Baelish, even the Tyrells, without realizing it at first. 

“Escapes through a relationship, imagined or real” is Sansa af. That’s what the Unkiss with the Hound is. She doesn’t want to think about Baelish and her first kiss, so she imagines something romantic for herself that never happened. Similarly, she obsesses about the potential of new relationships and friendships in her mind. Highgarden, Willas/Loras, Margaery…

“Spills intimiate details to strangers” I mean, come on. “He’s a monster!!!”

She is very good at training herself to act in a certain why by studying how other people behave and learning what will please them. She visualizes and rehearses what she will say around other people. 

She feels overwhelmed and FREAKS OUT and wants to be alone quite a bit. She finds refuge when alone, and is able to recharge for facing the next day there.

She has a continuous dialogue in her mind that tells her how to interact with people, what she should say and what she should do.

She is empathetic to the point of confusion, able to sympathize and understand even people who treat her horribly. She has self-doubt because she’s able to see things from all of these levels. 

Because of this confusion, she adapts actions and thoughts based on her susceptibility of other people’s viewpoints. Often to her own detriment. 

Recognizes her own limitations.

Loves animals.

Very sensitive to alcohol.

Is hurt when people question or doubt her, because she has quite a lot of self-doubt already. She fears criticism, especially in AGOT. And becomes very defensive of things, especially people, who she sees as an extension of herself when she really shouldn’t – like Joffrey. 

Feels trapped between wanting to be herself and wanting to fit in, and chooses to adapt herself in order to fit in. Because of this she’s good at mirroring others and switching her behaviour and preferences to fit with a given environment. 

Autistic girls can like girly, feminine things… autistic girls can fantasize about being princesses… in fact, I’ve known lots who do.

What do we know of The Hound?

He is full of hate.

He thinks the sweetest thing is killing.

He’s rude, brutal, ferocious, and unkind.

He views people in general as meat. “and I’m the butcher.”

He knows, without doubt that everyone is a liar, only out for themselves.

He is still heavily traumatized from his brother’s brutality.

He drinks too much.

He’s scarey as hell. On purpose usually.

He is disillusioned, jaded, cynical.

He knows his job inside and out, and is very good at it.

Ok, thats alot to know about someone whos head we’ve never been inside of.

Does he love Sansa?

Well, he definitely treats her way better  than he does everyone else. He’s still brutally honest, but he does temper it for her. (He doesn’t for Arya.)

He gave her a pet name. Not a nickname, a pet name. One that leaves no doubt that he does not view her as meer lying meat but rather as a pretty little bird, with a head full of songs/fairy tales, in a sea of scheming meat and monsterous killers.

All but once Sansa describes his physical handling of her as gentle to some degree… Does he seem like he’s typically gentle to you?

He told her his deepest darkest secret, it seemed like he didn’t want to but couldn’t stop himself.

He touches her everytime she’s within arms reach. (Doesn’t touch other people except as absolutely necessary.)

He seems to forget himself around her… Often… Though most of that is taken out of the show…

Here’s some examples from the book :

In the book he did not get Joffrey to safety then rescue Sansa from rapists during the riot… He abandoned the royals entirely, leaving them to Boros and Meryn and the gold cloaks to save, and immediately cut a path to her side where he chopped a guy’s arm off to prevent her from being dragged off her horse…

He also abandoned his beloved Stranger (His stallion.) to the crowd until she was safe.

He drunk-stalks her. Seriously. He cornered her on the steps and creeped pretty much everyone out talking about how grown up she is, how tall and pretty… He mentions her breasts… He’s stumbling drunk at the time.

He went, drunk off his ass, to her room and waited around for her to show up the night he abandoned King’s Landing, knowing it would be life or death if he got caught, to convince her to leave with him.

While there he obviously came very very close to kissing her just before he got really pissed at her reaction to that and threw her down on the bed.

(And presumably climbed in with her, looming over her… how else could she reach up, with a dagger pressed to her throat, and cup his face?)

(Ok, why get so mad at someone for not wanting you to kiss them? I’m pretty sure he’s had women not want him to kiss them before.)

Sex was definitely on his mind when he had her flat on her back in her bed. But he didn’t harm her in any way. Didn’t even touch her (other than the tip of his dagger at her throat.) that she noticed.

He demanded her to sing him the LOVE SONG of Florian and Jonquil while holding a dagger to her throat.

He litterally choked up and cried when she sang him “The Mother’s Hymn.” A song about mercy. Mercy for him, not mercy from him. Then she reached up and cupped his scarred cheek. (That’s something I bet no woman has ever done.) She touched his heart by doing that. He wept, said her name (Well, his name for her really.) very raggedly, climbed off the bed, ripped off his white cloak, threw it on the floor at her feet and left immediately.

Does this sound anything like The Hound described at the top of this post?

From his later statement: ‘I should have fucked her bloody and tore her heart out before leaving her for that dwarf.’ -While making a deathbed confession to try to provoke her sister into killing him.

Why concern himself with her heart if he doesn’t care about/want her heart?

People only give deathbed confessions of things they are ashamed of. I.E. He is ashamed of wanting to have sex with her so much that in a drunken/traumatized state he likely considered (momentarily) forcing her.

(That’s not the thinking of a would be rapist… Rape is about power and violation and humiliation… Rapists are NOT ashamed of wanting to rape someone. It isn’t the physical feeling that gets a rapist off, it’s the power trip. So sex is the operative word here. Not Rape.)

He didn’t touch her because he doesn’t actually want to ‘fuck’ her… He wants her to participate willingly, like in the pretty little love SONG(s) in her head.

I.E. He wants to make a love SONG with her. He’s just unfamiliar with that urge… no doubt he has no idea what to do about it and probably would never admit to such a romantic feeling, even to himself. He would consider such feelings as weakness.

I’m so perplexed that y’all really believe that SANSA purposely drove a wedge between Jon and his “gf”……… Like y’all REALLY believe that Jon loved the woman who seized his weapons and ships, held him captive, refused to respect his title as king, refused to believe that the threat of the WW were real, accused Jon of threatening her and demeaning her, threatened Jon’s sister, not once, not twice, but THREE times, made Jon’s parentage reveal all about her, never once asked Jon how he felt or what he wanted, never considered his love for his family and his principles, how he values the truth (she has NEVER valued truth), tried to manipulate and isolate Jon from his family by holding sex over his head when he CLEARLY did not reciprocate or want to have sex with her, ignored how he might feel about incest, forced a kiss on him and he just stood there and closed his eyes, not moving, just waiting for it to be over…

But yeah Jon loves her SO MUCH…

You know, I think Jon looks as if he got a pretty sweet deal. There’s a “not too shabby, Snow, not too shabby” glint in his eyes when he rides off with the Wildlings.

Like, he finally stabs his narcissistic sociopath aunt to death after having knelt to her every five minutes, gets sentenced to the Wall for life, fucks off immediately and joins the Free Folk who never kneel to anyone. And now he’ll live a life without any responsibilities whatsoever. He can go to bed when he wants to, wake up when he wants to, bang one of the many women who’ll claw their eyes out for the chance of being with him when he wants to, go home and visit his family whenever he wants to. He can even have kids if he wants to, because one cousin is Queen in the North and the other is the King of the Six Kingdoms and no one’s gonna behead him for abandoning the Watch or breaking his vows.
