In the beginning of the PRECARIOUS DOMESTICITY project I worked a lot with sketches and small 1:10 scale models to study different compositions and tried to be as unprejudiced as possible. At this point everything was speculation: I had no idea whether the structure would actually work in full scale or not. (Glue is treacherous. It keeps anything together even in the most mindless positions.)  

Anyway, I kept on being an amateur. It’s very liberating!

At the same time I had to keep in mind that laws of physics actually ARE very strict.

But could it be possible to confuse the viewer to think different?

This topic aroused my interest.

This week Leo travelled to the beautiful city of Kouvola to receive a grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. Giving a chance to radical projects that have no certainty of (economical) success or future applications but only a strive to study and understand is something that we value greatly.

To kick off our new blog I would like to make this open invitation to our exhibition PRECARIOUS DOMESTICITY in Suomenlinna Gunpowder Magazine on Wednesday, June 13th 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.

The pop-up exhibition of three utility sculptures, paintings and a video installation is open for TWO DAYS ONLY: 13.-14.6. in Suomenlinna.

Comfortable and stable. Two words that bring together nearly 100 years of industrial furniture design. For the past year I have been studying the possibility of combining a composition that evokes a feeling of danger with a measure of domestic use. What is enough to create a balance while the whole retains an optical impression of imbalance? PRECARIOUS DOMESTICITY, an exhibition in the Gunpowder Magazine of Suomenlinna will exhibit an unconventional take on the idea of what a piece of furniture can be. 

The exhibition architecture in the 18th century barrel vaulted space of Gunpowder Magazine is designed by AS LL TK.
