Given that Zain is also an Azure Dragoon, he knows the danger that having both eyes would bring. Estinien did not like that.

It turned into an all our brawl that Estinien won bc he has more experience.

I think they started with lances and then it devolved into straight fist fighting bc both were just lost in the sauce after fighting Thordan or whatever that scene was (it's been a while). Zain got knocked the fuck out and didn't know what happened to Estinien till later.

Zain is a dragoon so he and Estinien did spend some time in the Steppe! Orn Khai thought they were already dating lol. (Not till EW)

He goes with them to the Steppe sometimes and always brings it up.

For day 4 I did Fury! A bit obtuse but...

Zain has a rage state he can enter involuntarily when his friends are in danger. He does not remember anything during this state. Very few people are capable of breaking him out of this, Estinien being one of them. I think Estinien of all people...would really understand the whole 'I don't remember anything my body did during horrific things' thing.

I had to get a little obtuse with this one cause I struggled to find something to work in the short time frame I gave myself... Hopefully it still counts lol.

Okay, you know, re-reading the Haurchefaunt story "Thoughts Unspoken" just drives home how wildly different Haurchefaunt's view of his family was from Artoirel's. Because when Artoirel apologizes to WoL after their mission in Falcon's Nest, he says that their father "has never been able to say no to my dear half-brother." But Haurchefaunt in his letter suggests he barely ever spoke to his father, and certainly not to ask him for things--this request to take in the Scions was a struggle for him. From Francel's story "Vows Unbroken," Haurchefaunt ran off and avoided being at the manor as much as possible to get away from the Countess.

I... wonder if Artoirel was just continually told that Haurchefaunt was their father's favorite by his mother. Rather than actually seeing any evidence for it himself.

ffxiv really is the most 'playing with dolls' game ever, not just because of the whole customisation options and deciding your own lore and all, but because it is asking A LOT of your imagination at all times for you to remain immersed and not see the game as incredibly stilted as it actually is. like in any given cutscene on screen all you see is the wol silently doing generic wol face #3 as they pull out the same generic pulling out weapon animation they use before every fight scene and then they fade to black before you actually see them attack because they don't have the budget or space in the writing for them to actually do anything unique. BUT IN MY HEAD my wol is doing back flips and getting punched and spitting out blood and yelling and looks cool as shit and i WILL explain all of this to you with the exact same energy as a 6 year old breathlessly narrating an epic fight scene between two dolls that are actually just clutched in my hands being mindlessly slammed together

i love ffxiv with all my heart and there is a lot of interesting intentional lore in it and i totally fuck with trying to analyse and make sense of some of the seemingly contradictory things going on in the story, even if only for your own sandbox fun

but at the same time you have to accept that it is an MMO published in 4 different languages that has been running for over a decade with multiple writers across easily over a million words in the main story quest alone. sometimes the writers were just making stuff up as they went along and had to make it all sort of fit together after the fact. sometimes things have been written in because they just need a convenient excuse for the player character to get to do MMO things (e.g. travel to any unlocked location at any time). sometimes localisation results in different implications for things depending on what language you played in. sometimes plot lines are completely abandoned or contradicted because they clearly just Forgor💀

trying to say 'this is THE One Always Intended Truth and everyone should abide by it and its consequences' about anything in ffxiv seems like an exercise in driving yourself insane
