There is a reason for this though!

The original tweet summarizes it pretty well. Fanfic tends to be popular among certain types of neurodivergent people (aka people most likely to read excessively as a child, and have burnout as an adult) for the same reasons that we tend to hyperfixate–neurochemical signaling (I hope I’m using that phrase correctly). What I mean is, for people who are really dependent on changes in dopamine/serotonin/neurotransmitter levels, who have low levels or wonky neural reward systems (perhaps the most common types of neurodivergence)…people like us rely on dependable external sources of those neurochemicals. In order to function, we spend a lot of our free time trying to level out our brain chemistry using things that can reliably bring us a steady stream of joyful moments (rewards) without costing too much of the mental effort that is already in short supply.

significantly: the investment of reading has to be balanced with a steady “return on investment”–and this return has to start fairly quickly. because again, we don’t have a lot of attention/energy to invest on tiring things. we have perpetual “low batteries” in that regard.

that doesn’t mean these stories are “simple,” or that they lack complexity or value–only that the reward has to come in short regular intervals, and it has to have a low “upfront cost.” which is why fanfic stories are so perfectly formulated for neurodivergent readers–they are often beautifully written, but skip a lot of the upfront costs (of introducing new characters, of world-building, of getting the audience emotionally connected to the story elements).

the nature of fanfiction is that the reader has a pre-existing relationship with this world and these characters. that–combined with the shorter average length of fics–means that fan fics very quickly start “rewarding” the reader in a way that traditional fiction struggles to. that’s not a bad thing! and maybe it’s something more traditionally published writers should be paying attention to.

Fanfic, as a genre, has been uniquely helpful and accessible to many neurodivergent readers who would otherwise struggle to immerse themselves in stories. I’m glad so many of you have found a way to love and enjoy reading again! The important thing is that you are spending time inside stories you love–the way those stories are published or presented to the world is just one detail.

What are you doing these days?

I’m neck deep in new passion for the extended Undertale Alternate Universes (sometimes called the Undertale Multiverse / UTMV). I have a lot of new fics centered around characters like Cross, Killer, Nightmare and Dream, but I haven’t abandoned any of my own stories! Everything is still in progress, and will be until the day I leave this fandom (which won’t be any time soon. I’m absolutely hyped for Deltarune and some of the big AU projects like Underverse ).

Do you post anywhere else?

Not aside from the two places mentioned above. Pillowfort didn’t end up working out for me (not a problem with the platform itself!) but honestly twitter is kind of terrible for fandom stuff and authors in particular because it’s so hard to find anything ever again. I’m really hoping the newly proposed Fandom Nexus project works out and looks good, because I would love a better place to talk about fandom that doesn’t limit me to 280 characters.

Do you still check this tumblr?

EXTREMELY RARELY. There’s a couple of content creators who only post here that I occasionally check in on. It’s not a very reliable way to get ahold of me, so I highly recommend going through AO3 or Twitter instead.

Pillowfort has currently requested that its users hold off on posting nsfw content because there’s issues with hosting porn on a .io url, which is fine. They weren’t exactly expecting the massive nsfw exodus from tumblr, and they’re trying to accomodate us all. I’ll be holding off reposting the majority of my fics until after they’ve sorted that out.

Underfell Papyrus Fic Rec List

I kind of forgot that I still had this in my drafts, but now that I’ve cleared everything else out, this is the only thing that’s left. I briefly considered just deleting it, but I’d already compiled the list below, so all that’s left is for me to say some nice things about all these amazing people.

I was talking with @sanster-blaster about our mutual love for Underfell Pap, and mentioned I had a long list of favourite authors and fics featuring him that I could pass along. This is super late, bb, but hopefully you still see it and find lots of nice things to read during the purge. :3

Kit writes some absolutely spectacular cross-universe fraternal and romantic skeleton shenanigans with a special emphasis on the Papyruses. Her Fell!Pap is incredibly nuanced, amazingly compelling and just brilliant to watch. I definitely reccomend the Broken Bones multiverse as a starter.

I have endless love and respect for Moon because they write some wonderful kink -- not always of the sexual variety either. Their character explorations are deep and varied and endlessly interesting, and their Fellbro dymanic makes me so very happy. I totally reccomend Beloved, Beloved (EdgeBerry with sub Edge), Strawberry Milk (Fellcest), you open always petal by petal myself (SpicyHoneyMustard with genderfluid Edge and possibly Stretch) and for a totally different take on things, Haruspex Traitor Innocent (Fellcest).

Look, if you haven’t read the Ain’t this the life series, you should. It’s amazing. The early fics have a strong focus on Kustard, but the background Fellcest is ever present and once you start to see more of Edge you absolutely fall in love with this poor, long-suffering bastard with his terrible taste in dudes and pants.

in your slaue fanfic i love your interactions between all of the skellies!! i love love love how edge is forcibly made to sub by swap pap bc i love it when edge subs. my question is, are there ever going to be any hard times for classic!pap in the fic and how would the other skells react? i adore when edge and swap are tortured emotionally/physically, but i love seeing classic in pain the most uwu,,,, tbh i just want to see him break and all of the other skells being angry etc.

In chapter 1 Sans wondered if Papyrus remembered the promise Sans made to him. What was the promise? Was it something cute? Like Sans promised to always be there for him and have his back?

It was totally cute, and decidedly romantic. >_>; Sans expressed his commitment...basically telling Papyrus that if he asked, Sans would leave everything behind, would be devoted to him and no one else. Not the company, not Gaster, not their money or status or reputation.

...and then Paps rejected him. Unfortuantely, Sans doesn’t make or break his promises lightly, so he still feels bound to it even believing Papyrus doesn’t reciprocate his feelings.

In the FBOP AU did Sans used to read Papyrus bed time stories? ❤️

Yes. This is totally a headcanon I subscribe to in all my Underfell universes. Even into Papyrus’s difficult teenage years, even if they were fighting or angry at each other, Sans would always offer a bedtime story at the end of the day and Papyrus would always say yes. That was essentially their peace treaty, and by the next morning they’d be back on good terms with each other.

It only stopped after Gaster started running Sans ragged in the labs, leaving him too exhausted to really offer the stories anymore, and for a long time Papyrus was too prideful to ask. Eventually Sans realised how long it had been, and half-jokingly offered one, only for Papyrus to sharply turn him down because he was definitely ‘too mature to need silly babybones stories anymore’. Sans never pressed the matter.

How sick was Sans when his HP started going down? Was he like stuck in bed with clear signs that something was wrong? Or did he just become tired?

Combining these two asks, since they’re along the same vein.

Sans was, indeed, extreme sick, although given Gaster’s uncompromising work ethic Sans still did his best to show up for work -- looking like hell and not always entirely lucid -- right up until the point he collapsed in one of the hallways. After that, Papyrus interceeded on his behalf and insisted that Sans get some proper bedrest (with Papyrus taking care of him) until he was doing better.

Sans’s deterioration took a while, but what Gaster did was kind of like destroying his immune system: compromising his soul so it would accept grafts of foreign magic and eventually accept them as if they were his own. The treatments had their own ill effects on his system -- weakness, dizziness, numbness, random pains, loss of control of both his magic and his body, extreme fatigue -- but it also got compounded by Gaster running him into the ground with their typical workload.

Obviously his health and stats never recovered from it, and he still struggles with exhaustion, not to mention nightmares and a fair bit of mental trauma from the whole ordeal. His capacity for magic is much more significant now, though (not to mention his arsenal of bad-time giving blasters).
