You still have to start somewhere. No one automatically makes it into a high position. Obviously you hope it’s sooner rather than later. Depends on the kid. I’ve met alright ones. And some I couldn’t stand. 

Yeah, which I know that. I don’t want to be like superintendent or anything lol. Just a gym teacher is good. It’s super entry level. Haha, yeah there are always the troublemaker kids. Hopefully those are the ones that I can break through to.

KURT: I definitely want you to. I'll grab something to eat on the way back from work and we can talk over dinner?

I mean, people want to get jobs, but more as a obligation than something exciting to have. But I guess teaching sports to kids  is more fun than everything else.

It’s so much fun! Seeing them figure out how to do it finally is really satisfying. I think I was born to work with kids.

KURT: I do. Can you come over this evening?

Ah well I’m glad it’s your favorite sport and yes go Buckeyes, there pretty good.  That would be great and don’t worry about the knee. It’s old news now.

Exactly. You have to build your resume. Put in your years. All that fun stuff. Good luck to you with that! Someone has to watch them. Might as well be people who aren’t me. On the bright side, you get to give them back when you’re done with them. 

I mean, here’s the thing. Are you planning on just taking a check for a few months worth of rent once a year as a paycheck? Because I’m not. I don’t expect to be making big bucks or anything, but I kind of wanted more than 4 hours a week, haha. Hey, kids aren’t that bad. I like them. I kind of want my own someday even.

Oh, I get it. Well, then I hope you get a call back. I’ve never seen someone so excited to start working as you are. Great work ethic right there, I’m sure you’ll find a place and they’ll love you there.

Yeah. Wait, really? You’ve never seen someone excited to work? Actually, now that I think about it, almost everyone I know is really nonchalant about getting a job after college. Huh. 

KURT: Hey... I wasn't sure if it was okay to text you, but I miss you.

Oh I bet! I always dreamed of getting to go back and teach at Dalton. I guess that won’t be happening for a little while now until they rebuild, but it sounds like such a great opportunity for you. 

I heard about Dalton and the fire. That really sucks. It was a good place. But you never know, they could have it built in a few years and then you could go back and teach there.

Ah that’s g reat, and football was great when I played but got a bum knee now. 

No one starts out as CEO. Everyone has to prove themselves and whatnot. Same rule applies with teacher versus assistant, I’d imagine. I’ve never had a big interest in teaching, but I suppose that works out in your favor then. And good on you for wanting to deal with the little ankle biters. 

Yeah, no one starts out as CEO, but usually they have like a job that gives a check once a year. I kind of want a real job. But I find out about the gym teacher position at the end of the month, so that’s cool. Hey, if I don’t deal with the ankle biters, then someone else might, and a big thing aside from teaching sports and physical fitness is having someone who they can go to if things aren’t okay. I wanna be that guy too.

I think no one does. You can save up for some months, get a little part time job on the side. Find a roommate and rent will even be smaller.

Oh, whoops. Typo. It’s once a season. So like, once a year, since I’m not doing anything for the fall. So yeah, once a season and it’s enough for like two months rent if it’s a crappy place. I’d need a real job, like a full time 40 hours a week kind of job.

Well, but it’s a start! It will be experience to maybe be called for an elementary school. You’re fresh of college, it’s really cool you got a job immediately.

Yeah, it’s pretty cool. I don’t think they expect people to live off of what they pay coaches, because you only get paid like once a month and it’s like enough for maybe two month’s rent lol, but I gotta find something to actually hold me over till I get a real teaching job though. Don’t wanna live with my dad forever.

Nice! That’s a great way to get experience in the field you want to go into. I’m sure they just want to make sure you’re actually capable of the job before making you a full time teacher and all. 

I like that outlook. It’s pretty positive. Maybe that’s all they’re doing, just waiting to see how I do at the coaching job before they offer me a real one. In the meantime, I filled out an app- they said they are always looking for substitute teachers, and did you know that you don’t even need to have a teaching degree for that?? They only care if you have a bachelor’s. Crazy.

It’s always nostalgic to visit, so I can’t imagine being a teacher. It sounds so cool. Well, now you go this one and it will be good experience. It might be easier to get a place at an elementary school after.

The coaching one isn’t full time, so there’s definitely some room to get something more. I think with that, there’s no actual hours, just a few days a week for a couple of hours, mostly during weight training stuff. I’m hoping for the full time gym teacher gig still. 

You’ve got the passion and dedication to it already. I’d say they’re crazy not to consider you after this. Show ‘em what you got and whatnot. 

I just want to help kids succeed and being active is so important. And so is knowing how to react to things, which I hope I can help with. On Monday I get to go in and work with Coach Beiste which is cool. Being in my old school is really awesome.
