   “Is that a yes?“ he asked, pushing his fingers through my hair, fanning it out around my shoulders and searching my face intently. ”Please let it be yes,“ he said with a gravelly edge. ”Stay with me tonight. Let me hold you, even if that’s all it is. Let me keep you safe.”

Coach pointed beside me. “All right, Patch. Let’s say you’re at a party. The room is full of girls of all different shapes and sizes. You see blonds, brunettes, redheads, a few girls with black hair. Some are talkative, while others appear shy. You’ve found one girl who fits your profile-attractive, intelligent, and vulnerable. How do you let her know you’re interested?”  "Single her out. Talk to her.“  "Good. Now for the big question-how do you know if she’s game or if she wants you to move on?”  "I study her,“ Patch said. “I figure out what she’s thinking and feeling. She’s not going to come right out and tell me, which is why I have to pay attention. Does she turn her body toward mine? Does she hold my eyes, then look away? Does she bite her lip and play with her hair, the way Nora is doing right now?”  Laughter rose in the room. I dropped my hands to my lap.  "She’s game,“ said Patch, bumping my leg again. Of all things, I blushed. 

   I typed “angel wing scars” into the Google search bar. I hovered with my finger above the enter key, afraid that if I went through with it, I’d have to admit I was actually considering the possibility that Patch was-well, not… human. I hit enter and mouse-clicked on the first link before I could talk myself out of it.   […] I pushed back from the desk. I crammed everything I’d read into a mental folder and filed it away. And stamped SCARY on the outside of the folder. 

   The truth of the matter was, this was going to end badly. No matter how much we backpedaled, stalled, or looked the other way, one day all too soon, our lives would be ripped apart. What would happen when I graduated and went off to college? What would happen when I followed my dream job to the other side of the country? What would happen when it came time for me to marry or have kids? I wasn’t doing anyone a favor by falling in love with Patch more every day. Did I really want to stay on this road longer, knowing it was only going to end with devastation?
