A very suspending scene, I loved it! It actually made me think about why he didnāt kill the baby, since I first watched it in cinema. Here are some of my theories.
1. Michael is the imbodiment of Evil. A kid, a baby to be exact, cannot be evil and is the most innocent life form. He only seems to kill people also being able to adapt evil.
2. Speaking of adapting Evil. His first kill was when Michael was 6 years old, which means only at that age he was capable of consciously doing bad things. He may project this to others, which is why he wonāt kill someone under the age of 6. Also notice that he didnāt kill the kids that ran into him (both in H78 as well as H2018). The kid he killed in the car however was already older and capable of doing bad things (shooting is not an innocent kid thing, also he accidentally shot an innocent, Dr. Sartain). I donāt say he justifies killing those people ābecause they are badā, but it somehow is programmed into him. It may also serve as a metaphor for us, the audience.
3. He needs his prey to be capable of feeling his terror, run , fear and scream from him, what a baby cannot provide. He is the Boogeyman after all.
4. He really just kills without any reason and chooses his victims randomly. Underlining the aimless killer drive in him. Thus, the baby was only lucky.
Worth a note: the baby in the movie cried at the beginning and calmed down when Michael turned towards it and went on.
Also remember kids: everything in cinema is intentional. The shots, the script, the lights, the colors, the camera angle, music, etc. everything perfectly aligned and combined to tell the viewer a certain something. It is up to you now to figure out what this scene was meant to tell us about Michael.
