Shannon already seemed ready to implode, especially as Mikaela claimed his free arm with all the air of someone who had a right to that-which,of course, she did. “I’ve never heard of you, actually,” the woman still made a valiant effort. “New in town, I take it,” it wasn’t really a question and there was a bite to the words.

She shot a look at Cerus who smiled back faintly, a smile that revealed absolutely nothing. “I didn’t realize…Well, you see, you weren’t really supposed to bring a guest; each invite was personal,” she informed him, though, despite her effort to sound casual, she sounded more like a petulant child.

Cerus hummed thoughtfully at the information, raising an eyebrow. “I did not realize  that.”He glanced back to Mikaela. “Perhaps we should leave?”

Shannon shot the other woman a winning smile. “Well, Cerus, darling, you were invited,” she pointed out.

“No, not exactly new,” Mikaela replied, a smile light on her lips. “Perhaps I have been laying low too much lately though, if you have not had the chance to hear of our–mm.. thing.” There was a playful glint in her eyes as she pulled Cerus a bit closer, as though she was playing a game. The more annoyed Shannon was, the higher Mikaela’s score would be. “Well, you see, between my job and this man–” she purposefully batted her eyelashes at him, “–I admit I haven’t been able to socialize often these days. He keeps me too busy.”

If the other thought her words could rattle her, she was sorely mistaken.

“My.. if I didn’t know better, I would’ve thought you were unhappy to have me here, Shannon.” Mikaela’s smile was sweet, and her voice unbothered. “But I understand.. if every invite brought uncounted guests then that would only make it a disaster for the party hosting, wouldn’t it?”

“If there’s going to be the threat of sword fights, maybe I should brush up on the fencing I did through high school,” Finn joked running a hand through his hair with a laugh. In reality, he knew he had been a mediocre fencer, and it probably wouldn’t be much help since he had used foils instead of full blades like these.

“I do promise that if you have me here as a guest, I would not do anything to abuse your hospitality, I might even be able to actually take care of myself properly, though that would be harder to do,” he said reasonably. “I haven’t actually tried that recently though. Maybe after I have at least a few pages mocked up, I’ll take you up on the offer to stay here with you for a few days.”

Cerus  snorted. “Well, there’s a  fully equipped  gym across the  apartment and  I rather like  swords, so you can practice. I could  even teach you a trick or ten,” he said amusedly. “Not with foils, though, never did like those,” he added with a shrug.

This whole afternoon had ended up being one of the best he had had in recent memory, mostly because he had found a new friend. “I’ve been known to get so absorbed in my work that I don’t sleep until I’m stumbling around like a zombie. But how about I think about taking you up on that offer after I’ve got something to show you of this project. Or, maybe if I get stuck, I could come here and work while surrounded by your collection?”

Cerus laughed. “Now that would be...amusing, but potentially dangerous, given there’re a couple of swords on display in my bedroom, so you know...I might take one if I think there’s a burglar here,” he grinned. He didn’t need a weapon, but his...ability was not something he’d shared with Finn just yet-mostly because he really wasn’t sure how his friend might react. He’d let him get into the histories and see if he came to him with questions of his own. 

Cerus seemed largely unimpressed as he glanced towards the balcony in question. Once beautiful bay doors, the color now peeling off and several glass panes missing altogether yawned out into the night, the balcony balustrade beyond them also crumbling with age.

As much as she didn’t want to admit it, Cerus had a point. She sighed silently. “Fine. Point taken,” Amelia remarked. Honestly, she would have preferred to cover more ground and get out of here sooner, but if they were sticking together, better to go down then up she figured. “I say we go with the basement,” she answered him.
