"Demons, you say?"
Amaterasu nodded again, eyes crinkling in amusement at Loki's curiosity.
'Yes, demons. But it's nothing too serious. Imps, tengu, namahage and the like. The worst you can stumble upon nowadays are the bandit spiders, nasty as they are. Each one is bigger than a house, and they're greedy to boot. They hoard any money or treasure they can get their claws on, and they become especially savage if they think you're trying to steal from them, but they aren't too hard to beat if you've got the right technique. My son and I like to make a game out of hunting them down. Whoever deals the finishing blow gets the prize.'

'Oh, certainly.' Amaterasu bobbed her head in a short nod.
'Most of Nippon is much more...rural than this place, if that makes any sense. And it isn't uncommon to find demons congregating in certain areas, though they cause less trouble now than they did in the past.'

"Worthy enough a reason, I suppose. Do you not find your choice of paws somewhat limiting? I enjoy the sensation of wind through my fur or feathers as much as the next beast, of course, but I find the natives react with less hostility to a humanoid form."
"I've used this form for so long that I suppose I've become rather fond of it, honestly. Besides, the locals back in Nippon never seemed to mind too much."
She huffed a bit.
"My more humanoid form is a bit of a hassle to deal with when I'm not on The Plain, anyways."

Loki nodded in thanks, straightening his coat and walking leisurely down the street.
"What brings you to this side of Midgar-Earth?" He asked politely, checking his terminology for his companion’s benefit.
Amaterasu trotted alongside Loki and allowed her eyes to wander.
'Curiosity, mostly. I usually limit myself to Nippon and The Plain, so I decided it was time for a change of scenery.'

"Then I should have to bear that in mind, if it ever came to blows between us."
Loki nodded with a hint of empathy. He knew the way various venoms and poisons acted on the body, some from first-hand experience. They certainly could not be considered pleasant. As for this ‘Orochi’, Loki noted the name and squirrelled it away in his memory, in case their paths ever crossed, but he declined to ask further. There were plenty of names he’d care not to be asked about, and he could not begrudge that to another.
"Will you walk with me? I was attempting to go unnoticed in this place, and a biped walking with a wolf might more easily dismissed as a man walking his dog than this."
'Walk with you?'
Amaterasu glanced at Loki with curious eyes for a moment before a look of understanding crossed her face. It wouldn't be much of a problem to help him remain inconspicuous. Normal humans wouldn't be able to see her markings, and she was used to playing the role of "harmless domestic dog" around the general public.
She stood, stretched, and shook herself once.
'I don't see why not.'

"Dare I assume your death came by water?" Loki drew himself a little closer, conspiratively. "What you describe sounds similar to an account by an acquaintance of mine."
A quickly as he had come close, he retreated again. He stood, drew himself up to his full height, and turned as if to leave.
"Of course, the slow numbness of that kind of death is as dull to administer as it is to experience. Rest-assured, under my hand you would die begging for the pain to end."
Amaterasu shook her head.
'No, not water. I didn't drown.' She said. 'I was impaled. Speared through the back with a giant cane.' The sheer absurdity of the statement, true as it may have been, made her snort in momentary exasperation.
'But that wasn't what killed me. If I had taken some time to rest, I would have been fine. I think that it was either blood loss, exhaustion, or the venom from Orochi's bite that did me in. Perhaps a combination of all three.'
She decided not to bother explaining just who, or rather, what Orochi was. If Loki wanted to know the details, he'd just have to ask.

He hadn’t yet let himself return to what might be termed his ‘normal’ level of wariness, and Amaterasu’s dissembling posture did no favours either, it was only natural, to his mind, to expect a trap.
"That would depend," he replied smoothly, "what it felt like last time."
This new knowledge didn’t phase him; death, or near-death experiences often didn’t ‘stick’ when it came to beings like themselves.
'Well,' Amaterasu began. 'The pain was very intense, at first. It spread from my chest and made the rest of my body throb. But that faded after a while, and was replaced with a kind of...cold.'
She let her eyes slide shut as she reminisced.
'Yes. A very intense cold, and then boiling heat. The numbness came last, and after a while, I couldn't even open my mouth to draw breath.'
