Sonomama (Adv.) - Just like that; just as you are; as before; in a natural state. In the 1980’s photographer Taishi Hirokawa travelled through the Japanese countryside, asking farmers, fishermen, shopkeepers and laborers to dress in outfits by avant-garde fashion designers such as Issey Miyake, Comme des Garcons and Yohji Yamamoto. The resulting images are a playful interrogation of commercial fashion photography’s traditional affiliation with wealth and prestige, and an exuberant celebration of fashion’s transformative powers.
