friend of mine recommended a video essay that's like 5 hours long about why it's currently a whole Thing for fascists to claim they only eat meat and demonize vegetables etc etc, and it's genuinely quite well researched in many places and contains some fascinating history and has made me feel very weird about my status as an adult who enjoys drinking milk. but I've not finished it and I genuinely don't know if I will because at one point the ol' "you can't say you care about animals and also eat animals" chestnut got dropped by the white vegan essayist and it put such a bad taste in my mouth that I had to leave instantly
like idk man it just feels genuinely parodic to dedicate hours to analyzing how foodways have frequently been used as white supremacist propaganda and then casually toss out an argument that pretty invariably demonizes indigenous hunting practices with 0 regard for traditional knowledge and land stewardship guiding those practices
Every time I hear a white vegan say that I want to throw the rubble of the Klamath Dams at them.
The largest dam removal in U.S. history. So successful that the salmon that haven’t run freely in the river for literally over a century came back the next year. Not steady progress over a decade as expected, the very next salmon run they came home. No one alive saw salmon in that river outside the hatcheries kept by native’s tribes and the Department of Fish And Wildlife scientists desperately trying to save them. One of the activists who helped bring the suit spoke of their dying grandmother making them promise to bring the fish home, and they didn’t know how that was possible, but they spent decades doing it.
The legal basis for successfully suing the power company who owned the dams was Indigenous treaty rights to eat the fish. Eating the fish was the one thing in a century that succeeded in being a clear and legally binding right that superseded the desires of white capital and industry. I have been going to the public interest environmental law conference off and on for 20 years where a lot of organizing for Undam The Klamath happened. I’ve heard updates about every legal tact they tried as they happened, and they tried everything.
There are healthy, thriving salmon, trout, and lamprey in a rewilding and recovering Klamath River right now as a direct result of Indigenous people eating them. Of their legally binding right to eat them. They sure as fuck care more about those fish than any white vegan ever could. They are salmon people that the Creator sent Salmon to feed, while charging the People with protecting and stewarding them. It’s not possible to learn about salmon and trout in the Pacific Northwest without learning this, and it’s unambiguously racist to dismiss this symbiotic relationship.
The white vegans are trying to get all hunting and fishing banned in Oregon, and that’s quite possibly the single most catastrophic thing that could be done to the animals here because we killed off all the major predators of creatures like deer and without anything hunting them their numbers will explode, eat all the vegetation, destroy the ecosystem, and then die along with everything else in that failing ecosystem. Controlled hunting of deer is vitally necessary for the deer to survive. This is something Native people know, but patronizing racist savior-complex white people refuse to listen to.
I have a whole collection of Oregon’s Public Broadcasting’s documentaries about Klamath River or the larger story of fish and people in the region. If you watch nothing else, watch Klamath Dams Are Coming Out, First Salmon Ceremony, After The Dams, and First Decent (Native made). It could not be clearer that the salmon are being protected and nourished by the people who eat them, and that stewardship is a massive part of their creation myths. But it contradicts political vegan dogma so they don’t listen.
The Klamath River Runs Free
#also do you have any idea how much conservation is funded by people who want to eat those animals#at least in the us anytime someone buys ammo or hunting equipment or hunting licenses that money goes directly to state wildlife agencies
the most relieving thing to ever happen in the naruto anime is when Jiraiya puts his clothes back on and the innermost layer makes a clinking noise, finally reassuring you that people in the naruto universe are wearing light armor and not fishnets
I’m sorry WHAT. I thought they were fishnets?? have I been wrong all this time?!
its been stated in numerous info books and such that the standard ninja gear includes lightweight chainmail. it IS mesh, but its a mesh constructed from metal wiring for flexible protection.
this blows my mind, I had no idea. like I don’t think y'all understand just how shocked I am about this

I used to think “soupçon” was a French word for crouton and I used it as the French word for crouton for a long time and nobody stopped me.
Soupçon actually means “suspicion” and the reason nobody called me out on this is because I would use the word to imply the idea of something sprinkled on top of something else ala croutons. If someone said, “A soupçon of homoeroticism,” I thought it meant “Someone sprinkled homoeroticism on this story like croutons on a delightful Caesar salad.”
I wrote multiple essays that used soupçon as a noun with this translation in mind and I got a degree and this haunts me.
There’s no point to this post, it’s just very important to me that you know that I can be quite stupid
...OP I thought it meant like a soup ladle. Like a spoonful. I used it similarly. I was a professional editor for fiction presses for years. We are shaking hands about this.
op ur fine you used it fine

wattpad really gave ao3 a huge free promo with their new policy update that makes things even worse for their users. so to all the people who are now moving to ao3 due to this…
welcome! here are what you need to know about ao3 and how it’s the complete opposite of wattpad
trigger warning for the mention of contents that are allowed on ao3 that can be triggering to some.
ao3 is a non-profit organization. it’s run by fans (people like you and me), for fans.
fans donate to the site on their own free will to keep the site up and running smoothly.
ao3 is not a social media. it is an archive.
ao3 doesn’t have ads. it doesn’t have algorithms. it doesn’t have “going viral.”
everything is endlessly free on ao3. there is no “ao3 premium.” you will never see a single ad on ao3, and you can download as many fics as you want to read offline for free.
ao3 doesn’t have an app. and ao3 doesn’t need an app. any “ao3 apps” you see are third-party apps and are not affiliated with ao3, so be careful giving these shady apps your login infos or other personal information.
ao3 was built with the main purpose to 1.) be completely against censorship and 2.) host fics that are banned on other platforms like wattpad.
the reason ao3 doesn’t have an app is because for it to have its own app, appstore and google play store will have to approve it first. and due to the contents ao3 allow, chances are that it won’t get approved. which is actually a good thing. it doesn’t need an app. it works more than fine without an app.
on ao3, every single thing is allowed as long as it is fanfic or fan work (original works, fan art and video edits count as fan works, but if you want to post a video edits on ao3, you will have to post it elsewhere and then link it back to ao3 — ao3 cannot host video edits on its platform due to copyright issues)
by every single thing that is fanfic, I mean every single thing:
the filthiest smut without plot that is written purely for sexual pleasure is allowed. it has its own canonical tag called “plot what plot, porn without plot.”
fics that focus on non-consensual sexual intercourse are allowed, doesn’t matter if the fics glorify or romanticize the act, doesn’t matter if they’re written as kinks. they have their own canonical tag called “rape/non-con.”
fics about characters who are minors are allowed, even if they’re portrayed in a sexual manner, even if they’re non-consensual sexual intercourse. even if the minor characters are romantically and/or sexually involved with characters who are adults. even if they fics are written in ways that glorify and/or romanticize the thing. they have their own canonical tag called “underage sex.”
fics about incest are allowed. doesn’t matter if they glorify or romanticize the relationship. they have their own canonically tag called “incest.” fun fact: the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.
fics about self-harm and suicide are allowed. doesn’t matter if they glorify or romanticize the act. they have their own canonical tags called “self-harm” and “suicide” also “suicidal ideation”, “suicide attempt”, “implied/referenced suicide”, etc.
fics about violence and gore are allowed, even if they were written for the sake of shock value. they have their own canonical tag called “violence”, “blood and gore”, “blood and injuries”, etc.
rpf is also allowed. doesn’t matter if the content of the fics are dark and taboo. they’re treated the same way as any other fics.
every single dark and taboo fic you can think of is allowed. and it has its own canonical tag. because it is the main reason why ao3 was created in the first place.
“but what do I do if I don’t wanna see fics about xyz?” you can filter out any specific tag, character and/or pairing you want.
“what do I do if I wanna find fics about xyz?” you can search for any specific tag, character and/or pairing you want.
a lot of ao3 users rely on tags to search for specific tags, pairings, characters they want. they also rely on tags to filter out and exclude specific tags, pairings, and characters that they don’t want to see.
ao3’s tagging system is by far the most efficient one I’ve ever seen.
on ao3, our main principles are “don’t like don’t read” — which means YOU have a responsibility to curate your own internet experience. yes, ao3 allows all kind of messed up fics, but they also allow you the ability to NOT see anything you don’t want to see, by filtering out specific fics, pairings and/or characters.
no. you cannot harass authors who write about things that disgust you. you can and will be reported for harassment, and ao3 takes harassment very seriously. they will not take your side. because fucked up fics are allowed on ao3—fucked up fics are the main reason ao3 was created—whereas harassment is a direct violation of their terms of service.
ao3 is a house of the freaks and the perverts (affectionate). you ARE in the house of the freaks and the perverts. so don’t think about harassing or being rude to the freaks and the perverts who built this anti-censorship house and are kind enough to let you in.
ao3 is proship, profic, and anti-censorship.
any writer can write whatever they want, however they want. the only etiquette is that you tag your stuff properly and accurately
mistagging for visibility is heavily frowned upon here, and it won’t get your works more views. people will either block or report you if you deliberately mistag things with the purpose of getting your fic more views. as I’ve said before, ao3 is an archive. it’s not a social media. it doesn’t have algorithms or going viral.
if you come across a fic that has the tag “creator chose not to use archive warnings” it means the fic may or may not contain topics that can be triggering, but the author won’t tell you what these topics are, or if there are any at all. so proceed at your own risk.
that said, because ao3 is a non-profit site that hosts millions of works about others’ copyrighted characters, you CANNOT link a monetization platform anywhere on ao3, you CANNOT mention any donation, commission—or anything that involves money—anywhere on ao3. no, you cannot imply donation, commission, or anything that involves money either. that is against their terms of service.
and because ao3 is a place for fanworks, the “work section” of your post has to actually be fanwork (fanfic, original work, fan art, link to a video edit count as fanwork). anything that isn’t fanwork is not allowed.
you cannot post something on ao3 that is not fanwork. so no political statement, no call-out post, no “I’m looking for fics about xyz”.
ao3 is anti censorship as long as what your post is actually fanwork and as long as you don’t violate their terms of service that I’ve mentioned above.
ao3 has their own team of lawyers to protect them, their users, and every fanwork that is posted on their platform.
last but not least, don’t write directly onto ao3. write and store your works elsewhere before copy and paste them onto ao3 once they’re ready to post!! because ao3 does NOT autosave drafts for you, you risk losing everything you’ve typed if there’s a glitch, if the site crashes or if your device unexpectedly shuts down for whatever reason.
that’s all for now. have fun and happy writing/reading!
At this point, I truly think that MAGA are just like... anti-fun.
They don't like our rainbows, they don't like cosplay or costumes, they don't like cultural festivals.
Like... fun for them has very strict rules. Like it can't be too outlandish, it has to be about the country or have religion attached to it somehow, there's an itinerary. Like... the Freedom 250 thing has a baptism pool. The fun has to be a specific way or its out of line.
I'm in a picture with my friends, having fun at a parade in our dance costumes (which no one seems to complain about when they're on a stage) and they're like... "freak show," "lunatics," etc... and its like... yes? And?
Its a parade, youre supposed to provide a spectacle or you end up like the Christmas parade we were too queer to be in. (It was a requirement by the organizers to have the float themed around the birth of christ somehow. It was the saddest parade ever and I dont know why i wanted to be in it so bad.)
I bring my colorful flow props to everything. People spit on me, tell me im going to hell, preach at me while im just vibing. Like they see all the fun im having and have a visceral reaction to it. Like... how dare I make my lifestyle look fun and carefree in front of the impressionable youths? (My lifestyle is fun and carefree! I have a life that I love outside of my sexuality, but I also love being out and queer.)
A comment thats going to stick with me for awhile was 'i don't care if they're gay, but why do they have to be weird?'
And like... i am weird, yeah. For sure! But children's media for most of my young years was about embracing weirdness, so i figured it was okay. Plus, performers are often weird.
Im having fun in a way that doesn't fall into the three acceptable categories of fun: faith, country, or family.
And its like... I wonder if there's a correlation between MAGA and certain rules-based symptoms, you know?
This is why I'm so adamant that all of you adults have got to get more whimsical and start playing again as soon as possible. Being un-whimsical and believing in cringe is going to kill you or worse, make you a Republican
Genuine play defies control, so control-based ideologies (like MAGA) deem it dangerous. Being weird and having fun about it is actually a really good strategy to shield yourself and your loved ones from control-based ideologies.
It's why this is so effective:
I can't tell if this specific image is from an ICE protest or No Kings rally, but just fucking look at the sheer absurdity of what's happening here. There is a single person wearing an inflatable frog costume, standing quietly but confidently, hands on its fat little hips, in the middle of a dark street. And there's countless uniformed militia who are armed to the teeth standing around the lone frog - and the armed militia are the ones clearly on the back foot. They are unsettled, discomfitted, unsure what to do.
This strategy has been called tactical frivolity. It's a great way to puncture and deflate (pun intended) the overblown sense of gravitas and self-important victimhood that authoritarianism requires to survive.
Here's some excerpts of an interview of L.M. Bogard, who first coined the term:
"...authoritarians don't like to be laughed at," Prof Bogad says. This kind of symbolism works because "without even giving a speech, you are undermining the authoritarian script".
As protesters take on a powerful opposition, a silly costume takes control of the optics. "It makes it look worse if you respond with violence," he says.
Authoritarianism is based on the perception that you are both superior to everyone else and under attack from everyone else. This is, of course, Very Serious. So you've built your very serious army with your very serious uniforms and your very serious slogans and tattoos, waving your very serious flag. Because this is, again, Very Very Serious. Everyone Else needs to take this as seriously as you do.
And if the rest of us don't, it completely destroys the illusion. If we respond to all their puffing and posturing by poking fun at them in a silly and harmless way - or, far worse, if we're just having our own fun and living our own lives and it's not about them at all - it feels like an attack.
But when someone's doing the macarena dressed as an inflatable frog, there's really no way to beat the shit out of them without looking like an asshole.
Since the dawn of time, bigots have deflected any appeals for better behavior with "it's just a joke bro", but they get absolutely furious when anyone else does the same.
People with authoritarian beliefs get uncomfortable when they watch people they consider inferior outsiders having a blast without hurting anybody - people they can only vilify by calling them monsters and perverts who are spending every waking second attacking the one true religion and stuff - because our joy just doesn't fit into their paradigm.
And of course, I'm sure I'm not the only person who can see a certain jealous repression in the people who get mad at all those freaks who are playing in the sunshine dressed in all those ruffles and sparkles and oh wow somebody brought a bubble machine and
Hi, hello. I would like to add something here, and I want to start very gently because I know this word and type of performer scares people, but you are describing the whole purpose and the whole role and the whole point of a culture having clowns. This is what clowning is for.
Particularly the throughline of clowns that begins with the Italian commedia dell'arte. Every comic play that had those characters in it was about the servants and the masters, and made fun of the various masters--The Patriarch, The Doctor, The Merchant, The Soldier. Clowns were allowed to do it when others were not. Putting on the Motley and the Masks (later the paint) and speaking in Clownish gibberishes disguised and made safe the actor beneath.
Many cultures have clownery of some kind, because humour is present in all peoples. Here in what is called the US and Canada, clowns in many Indigenous cultures were the type to show others excess and behaviours that were unacceptable--a type of clowning that we still use for children (Mr Hands in Sesame Street is this type of Does Everything Wrong clown). In authoritarian countries ruled by Christendom, clowns took on another role:
Tactical frivolity.
The Puritanical US has a dim view of play and always has. But I want to point out that tactical frivolity isn't new, and it isn't solely limited to Trickster figures like Anansi, Loki, Hermes, Nanabozho, or Coyote either. There's also our friends the clowns.
Even if you aren't wearing a commedia mask or white face paint or a round red nose, engaging in the performance and play is clowning! You're clowning! That's clowning! And I'm saying this because I have observed how desperately terrible it is when a culture forgets about the clown's role in society and the importance of that role. And it's so frustrating to me that the US--and ONLY the US, mind you!--is so weirdly terrified of clowns when clowns are what we need in this bleak hour.
Spooky season is closer than you think.
Spooky Time! Spooky Time!
Stay engaged.

A recall for nearly 1.6 million dozen eggs has been upgraded to the highest risk warning by the FDA. Here's what that means for consumers.
On Aug. 12, the FDA reclassified a recall for nearly 1.6 million dozen white and brown cage-free eggs due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall is now Class I, which is considered "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death," according to the FDA.
As of July 24, a salmonella outbreak linked to the recalled eggs has sickened at least 98 people and hospitalized 26 across 17 states. The illnesses were reported between Nov. 21, 2025, and June 30, 2026. The FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were aware of 26 hospitalizations due to the recall, but no deaths.
---
There's a link to the egg list in the article.
nasa is using a 3D world graphic for the solar eclipse thingy today where germany is still devided in east and west adjfglkafdhgadfg. buddies, it's been almost 40 years.
So I showed this to a physicist and they were like "Oh! Yes! It's a figure from Fred Espenak's very old paper where he did a bunch of eclipse graphics! I've been looking at these my entire internet life, basically, for every solar eclipse! They called him Mr. Eclipse. He just passed away recently 🥺"
Anyway apparently Mr. Eclipse made 5000 years' worth of solar eclipse graphics, which you can find the simpler versions of here
So now instead of laughing at NASA for their outdated graphics I'm emotional about Mr. Eclipse and his hard work
