HISTORY.

The first time Asher was in the back of a police car he was fifteen years old and had a bad habit of finding himself in the wrong place at the wrong time — or so he always claimed. It was hard to play the innocent card at fifteen, caught red-handed by a police officer trying to break into another person’s car. But even at fifteen, Asher was quick to think on his feet. It’s my mother’s car, he had told the officer. Spinning an elaborate tale about how his mother had left the car keys in the car and had gone in search of help, Asher was sure he had talked his way out of being hauled into the back of a police car.

Until the owner returned to their car, ruining his ruse.

He was escorted back home to Staten Island by the arresting officer, who explained to his father that the owner of the car Asher had been trying to break into and didn’t want to press charges. His luck was short-lived, however, as his attempt at grand theft auto was the final straw in a long line of recent screw-ups. Growing up with a father who ran a local community centre and was heavily respected amongst his peers, Asher was always taught that every choice he made reflected on their family — good or bad. A once close father and son duo was now fractured after a strained twelve months following the sudden departure of his mother, who unbeknownst to his father had been unhappy in her marriage for over five years. Asher blamed his father for not fighting harder to save his marriage than he did their community, while his father refused to even acknowledge her existence anymore.

Two weeks after Asher was brought home in the back of a police car, he was sent to Philadelphia for the summer between school years. He didn’t return home to Staten Island until he was seventeen, two years after his father had sent him to live with his grandmother for the summer. Asher had expected to hate Philadelphia, with no friends to begin with and only his estranged grandmother to call family, but he quickly adapted to life in Philadelphia. It had been his idea to make his stay in Philadelphia more permanent after spending his summer afternoons at Rittenhouse Square Park and his evenings split between Lucky Strike and exploring the different neighbourhoods.

Asher had never expected to return to Staten Island before graduating high school, but his father suffering an unexpected health scare had him returning home for the first time in two years. He’d suffered a stroke. Asher dropped out of school and moved back to Staten Island permanently, where he would care for his ailing father until his unfortunate passing from another stroke when Asher was barely twenty years old. His grandmother had offered him his old bedroom back in Philadelphia, but it wasn’t the same anymore. Philadelphia no longer felt like home and Staten Island felt like a graveyard — haunted by ghosts he’d rather forget.

Instead of returning to Philadelphia, Asher soon found himself drifting around the East Coast boosting cars for quick cash for three years before earning himself a misdemeanour and a stint in county jail for twelve months.

His father would have been so proud.

After getting sprung from the county jail, Asher had decided ( with a hard shove from his grandmother ) that he should return to Philadelphia and finally get his GED. He’s spent the last couple of years back in Philadelphia, working hard to keep himself out of trouble by earning an honest buck for himself working behind bars, repairing cars in an auto repair shop and anywhere else that wouldn’t look too hard at the gaps in his resume but his penchant for finding himself at the wrong place at the wrong time might not be as far behind him just yet.
