I have this song stuck in my head...
She was free and wild, beautiful and unrestrained. She followed her heart with the grace of a wolf and the patience of a cougar.
Now her instincts failed her. She groped in the dark, not knowing what she felt or why. She knew one thing only.
The longing was overwhelming. It was a craving for calm in the chaos. Maybe, just maybe, it was the desire to be tamed.
Loneliness. Shivering, icy loneliness. It comes out of nowhere, a breath ghosting across your ear, perhaps. You ignore it. It was nothing; you simply imagined it.
There it is again, this time its edges softly skimming your spine. It’s there. You know it’s there, yet you ignore it anyway as you fight a shiver.
Next comes a caress across your shoulders, firmer now, more confident. It presses into you, testing your resolve, looking for an opening. It finds one in the shiver you can no longer deny.
It slides down around your ribs. Its touch is no longer gentle, but not yet painful. It tightens and constricts, causing you to suddenly exhale. You’ve lost your breath, yet you know that’s only the beginning.
Deliberately it begins to radiate outwards, into your limbs. They become heavy, weighted, and leaden as the cold begins to coalesce into something solid. You can no longer move.
It turns then to your head. Your lips frost over to silence the sound of longing that had escaped so shamefully before. Your eyes shut and block out the sight of the living world around you. Your brain spirals down, the second hand moving far too slowly, and you no longer care.
Even through this, the cold, the largesse, the ennui, you still feel the final stroke. The icy fire that shoots straight through your heart kills you. Not your body but your essence. You still breathe, you still exist. You still feel. You simply no longer hope.
