With Friends Like These (with my OC Mona)
Idk if this is the longest post I've made yet(?) But firstly off, I decided to implement the voice change in this AU, so; a few days before WFLT, Mona wakes up to hear Preston's voice sounding different, more deeper. And it completely throws her off at first.
Mona: "I think your voice sounds kind of- different now-?"
Preston: (pause) "..Huh, does it? I have not noticed anything. (Recites a part of his play out loud to test it out) Oh, IT HAS! (smirking) Hah, seems like I've gotten an upgrade. Don't you think?"
Mona: "Yeah. (Suddenly curious) Hey, does MY voice sound any different?"
Preston: Hmm... (squints his eyes at her in thought, a finger on his chin, trying to think if something has sounded different before straightening up) Nope, I don't think so! (Holds a finger up as they continue walking) But don't worry, yours is surely to follow suit in no time! It is a part of growing up after all."
Mona: (mood immediately shifts) "Growing up. .....right." (tries to hide how disappointed she feels at that) Cool. (Fakes a smile for good measure)
And it works for a while.
----------------β------β---β--------------------
When the others pick on Max, Nikki and Neil Mona feels bothered, as it feels wrong to her, and when Preston says he's never met anyone (Nikki) so loud, she, a bit awkwardly, replies "But you're loud too."
Everyone goes dead quiet at that, turning their attention to her, with Nurf even snickering (assuming that she roasted him) and Preston freezes too. It's then that Mona realizes how wrong it came off and rushes to add "I didn't mean that YOUR voice is annoying! I just meant- (pauses) you're loud, cause that's just- how you are. And she's loud cause that's just how she is. Right?" (Holds both hands up in question while hoping this'll get them to stop)
Preston, recovering: "W-Well, YEAH, BUT- she's.. even MORE loud than me!"
Nurf adds something snarky towards Nikki and then the trio. The others agree or nod. Mona begins "May-" before Nurf cuts her off with a joke directed at another topic and when everyone's attention shifts she's relieved, feels a bit bad for a moment she didn't fully speak up before letting go of it since they're already talking about something else.
-------------------------------------------------
In the Mess Hall the next morning, she sits and listens to Preston talk about the 3 different ideas he has for a play that he can't seem to choose from. Then the trio come in and everyone (except Nerris, Dolph, Space Kid and Mona) glares at them.
Mona looks at them, at Preston, at Nurf, at everyone else, back at the trio, back at Preston and then asks "Why are you all upset at them?" louder than a whisper. Nurf overhears and whispers "We're just messin' with them. It's called friendly ribbing" and adds "Come on, seriously, don't be such a buzzkill." when it looks like she's about to reply. Mona stays quiet, replaying the interaction in her head as breakfast starts. Like her brain tends to do. For what reason? She has no idea.
She gets cut off from her thoughts- thank goodness, a distraction! But. Oh flipping no, it's the platypus- as the platypus attacks Preston, who screams and launches her at Space Kid. And then all chaos breaks loose. Mona stands there awkwardly, trying to hide from the platypus but in vain, as she spots her and advances. Mona runs, she hasn't felt fear like this since the whole robber fiasco (and when Daniel returned) and shouts "THE HECK DO YOU WANT?! GO AWAY! JUST- GO!"but the platypus doesn't care.
At least until Harrison shouts "HEY! Come get ME instead!" and shoots out confetti for extra effort. It works and then Mona's arm is grabbed by Preston who drags both to them to hide behind a table. Then Gwen comes and takes care of the problem.
Later on on the activity field, Mona's once again confused when the others still glare at the trio and then Nurf tells her to shut up. She awkwardly points out she didn't say anything and he says "Yeah, well, you were probably about to." Mona stays quiet, she wasn't even going to say anything this time. On the inside, she's worried that Nurf hates her now and is going to start picking on her too.
-------------------
Preston comes up with the "Everyone's Frozen Flash Mob" and encourages Mona to try, which she does, copying him. And brings up how it's actually fun. She gets into it to the point she half-zones out when the trio show up, not wanting to lose focus.
-----------------
She gets swept along with Preston and Nerris by Max, Nikki and Neil's brawl and when it dissipates, she asks "....What are you guys doing-?" incredulously, massaging her cheek, her hair completely messed up, some light bruises on her face. That had really frickin' startled her.
---------------
The campers ridicule David and Mona sits there beside Preston quietly, not knowing what to do, glancing at Nurf occasionally. The trio get reassured that they're still liked and Nurf & Dolph apologize for the friendly ribbing. Then Nurf turns to Mona and shows her the middle finger but is smiling, saying "Buzzkill."
And this time Mona smiles slightly, relieved that everything's okay.
Then Preston bumps his arm against hers. "OH, we should do the same!" then struggles to come up with a friendly insult. "You are a- uhh..." Mona smirks, suddenly feeling smug; crosses her arms and says "Go ahead, Drama King."
Nurf, Nikki, Dolph and Harrison burst out laughing and Preston freezes for half a second before attempting to salvage his image. "Yeah, WELL, (fighting back a smile) YOU- uh-"
Mona leans back smugly. "I'm waiting."
Then he shouts the first thing that comes to his mind. "Away with thee, you mouldy rogue!", (inspired by I think some Shakespearean quote) making a shooing-the-fly movement. When she keeps smirking, "I don't even know what that means", he continues . "HAH, I win! I will NOT have a battle of wits with an opponent who's completely unarmed."
Mona just shrugs, still smiling.
That's when Preston chimes in that Nikki's laugh IS really loud, to which she cheerfully agrees.
"YOU're loud." Mona then shoots casually, smirking but not even looking at him but at a tuft of grass nearby and hears him sputter. "Yeah? Well- YOU're quiet!"
Mona sits back up straight. "Yep, tha's me. Everything needs balance."
To which everyone, minus Space Kid, Max and Ered laugh at. Neil smiles ever so slightly though.
---------------
When Gwen cuts on that there won't be a next week and this is the final week of camp, Mona's world screeches to a halt. She blocks out everyone's voices and keeps thinking about how she'll have to leave in A WEEK. She won't get to see Preston for 9 months, and can't even talk to him through anything else. She realizes this camp has become like a safe haven to her, and now- it's all gonna be over.
David announces a "Summer So-Long Celebration", a time-honored tradition to help them remember the time they'd spent at camp. Preston refuses on behalf of the entire camp but then sees Mona's sullen face, looking like she's close to crying and feels something tug at his chest too at the realization and says "On the second hand, let's hear him out, everybody!" When David explains they can do whatever they want to do, everyone perks up and is immediately in. And spread out in different directions after Neil tells them to start brainstorming.
But Mona's still glancing at the ground, close to crying. Then Preston gently nudges her arm and when she looks at him, he gently asks "What do YOU want to do, co-star?"
"I don't know..." Mona mutters, looking back at the ground. "I don't want this to end already... I JUST started to like this camp-" (feels tears pricking at her eyes and fights them back) "And I just- I finally have someone who- 'gets' me." Unknowngst to her, Preston is getting slightly emotional too. "I don't (loses the fight against tears) HAVE anyone like that back home..."
She wipes the tears off immediately. "Not like that." (As in, not anyone who's around her age)
Preston glances at the ground too, fidgeting with his hands before forcing on a cheerful facade. "Well," (puts a hand on her shoulder gently, and she hesitantly glances at him from the corner of her eyes) ",then we better make this week count." (Determined voice, getting up to his feet)
Mona attempts to force a smile. "Okay." (Gets up as well) But while they walk away, she resumes her thoughts.
-------------
At the Amphitheater next morning, she listens to the others exchange ideas, only half-listening. She has no idea how much sleep she got. (Autistic people can't handle change well. What's what happening to her here.)
Until Preston asks her "You got any ideas yet?"
"Not yet." Is all she says in reply.
-------------
She watches the whole fiasco with the mech robot go down, even temprarily getting distracted of her sadness, until it's brought up how he left his mark on the camp now. When the fireworks are kickstarted, her pupils widen and she automatically heads even closer to the dock without a single word. Everyone else are just as blown away and unknowngst to any of them, Max takes a photo from afar.
Eventually, Mona lets out a "It's beautiful."
Preston smiles before looking back up with a "Sure is."
--------------
She watches the first activities unfold, finding comfort in just watching from the sidelines. When Space Kid's riding a horse, she's watching with Preston (who's freaking the heck out) while secretly musing 'I want to try too...' and brings it up after SK's done, saying how she's never riden one.
Preston, shocked, instantly protests, saying it's dangerous. She tries to downplay the potential risks and said Space Kid was fine, to which Preston retorts he almost fell off. She insists she'll be more careful but he's still against it. He tells Gwen to stop her as she crosses the fence, panicking that the horse might attack her.
Gwen: (sigh) Look, kid-
Mona: Please, can I just- try? This could be a good memory in the making. I just want to do something fun before I go home.
Gwen: (sighs, relenting) Ugh. Fine. BUT," (as Mona perks up) Listen to my instructions. C-lo-se-ly."
She puts her on the horse and teaches her how to sit correctly to the best of her ability, then guides the horse along. After a while, Mona asks to try it unguided. Preston protests but Gwen lets go of the reins while walking right next. At one point Mona gets too eager and pats the horse, saying "This feels great! Good hors-" and the horse thinks it's being attacked, panicks and takes off, Mona doing a strangled yelp while holding on, almost falling off. Preston is panicking loudly in the background and Gwen shouts "MONA! HOLD ON! DON'T LET GO! DO. NOT. LET GO!"and Mona obeys, scared out of her mind.
Space Kid comes back with horse food and after watching the scene, calmly walks over and slips the food in. The horse screechs to a halt at the sight of food, sending her flying off and Gwen rushes to catch her. Preston is instantly at her side and scolds her, calling her a "reckless fool" but Mona just smiles.
"I didn't think it'd freak out."
Space Kid, seeing Mona in Gwen's arms and Preston, thinks they're doing a group hug and jumps in, hugging Preston and accidentally making him kinda-hug Gwen. Mona thinks this is wholesome but doesn't say anything.
Gwen sighs. "You kids are going to be the death of me BEFORE I even GET to leave." (But is ever so slightly smiling too)
--------------
Mona gets invited to raccoon hunting by Nikki and Nerris and immediately agrees. It's almost the end and she wants to make the best of it. She chats with them a bit while they search, debating where to look, until they come across a cave after everything else is skimmed through. And BOOM.
They run out, Nikki cackling, Nerris shouting panicked and Mona's quiet, already sweating. They make it back and hide behind the platypus who stands on her tail to intimidate it. The raccoon growls back before Gwen comes with a broom and a scowl, scaring it off before groaning as the two run off with a shared "THE NEXT ADVENTURE AWAITS!" with Mona awkwardly following. They track down a caterpillar next before they overhear another activity and jump in with zero hesitation.
--------------
Time skip to Mona playing bing-bong with Nurf and failing miserably, as she's never played before. Nurf makes fun of her before adding "Hah. See? Just some good ol' friendly ribbin'."
Until she actually DOES manage to hit the ball, surprised herself. Nurf thinks it was good too but tries to play it off with a "Meh, not THAT bad I guess." And Mona admits to herself that this IS fun. More than she expected.
------------
She watches Preston and Ered sing together and internally wishes she could join them. But is scared to. Until they finish the song and Preston, beaming, looks over to her and encourages her to join.
Mona freezes. "....Me?"
Preston points out he saw that look on her eyes and even Ered adds "Come on, dude" with a smirk.
She hesitantly walks up to them, accepting her microphone and at first sings quietly as another song plays, getting bolder throughout the song, as loud as the other two by the end.
Preston: Now THIS will surely be a good memory!
Mona: (a bit red in the face when it hits her WHAT she just did) It... It wasn't SO bad, I guess... (recovers, slightly smiling)
--------------
She watches Nurf tackle Preston during a football game and ever so slightly winces. That had to have hurt. Before calling out "You got it!" when he gets back up.
--------------
Skip to Mona watching Les Miserables with Preston, who INSISTED they do so after he brought it up and she asked "...What's Les Mis?" He explains stuff to her throughout the story, VERY enthusiastically, after pausing the movie and she listens, eventually getting kinda into it too. When he eventually asks what she thinks she says it was a pretty interesting story, the acting was good and she liked the songs Do You Hear The People Sing? and On My Own.
And he's ecstatic that he FINALLY has someone to share an interest with.
----------------
Mona suggests a game where there's at least 4 people playing; two of them have either an object or toy and the other team try to get it from them. The first team has to toss the thing to the other person they're in the team with so that the "enemy" won't get it, and if the other team does get it, they have to run, dodge the enemy team and pass it along so that it doesn't get taken. Nikki instantly pairs herself with Mona, becoming the "enemy team" and the first team is Nurf and Harrison.
Long story short: Nikki is relentness with trying to get it from Harrison, who tosses it (one of Nerris' toys, that they got permission to use) to Nurf, Mona's surprise attack fails when Harrison alerts Nurf, but then Nikki gets an opportunity. When the toy is in Nikki's hands their team stays victorious as she's very quick on her feet, but Mona doesn't have a quick enough reaction time and Harrison and Nurf always ended up getting it from her. That was the most fun Mona's had since the water gun fight during Camp Corp.
--------------
Time skip to Mona playing badminton with Nerris, Mona joining one of Preston's plays about the summer ending, but as a background character who has zero lines (what to her was still a HUGE step), Mona on a boat with Nikki, racing against Nerris and Dolph..
-------------
Nikki makes a friendship bracelet (red with a :) on it after finding out red's her favorite color) for Mona and asks her to put it on. She does, looks at it some more and says thanks through her regular-awkwardness. Then Preston shows up, cheerfully stating he made one too (with purple, black and red lines) and she puts that on too, smiles and says it looks nice. Both of them do.
--------------
It's go-home day and Mona's gloomy from the beginning, just like the day before. She waves bye to David after getting on the bus and listens to the others chat and say goodbye to each other. Dolph asks Mona "You VILL be coming back, right? It was quite fun having you as a part of our little group." Nerris adding "Definitely. It was nice to see you come out of your shell" and says something about character growth. Mona says she wouldn't miss it for the world and says bye to them.
Then she turns to Preston who's already tearing up but trying to keep it cool. Mona just smiles and says "You know you can cry if you want to, right?" And then he caves in and pulls her into a hug (when they're at his stop), saying he's going to miss her a LOT and says it was an honor for him to have a friend like her. The hug triggers her tears too and she hugs him back, saying "You too. You- actually.. made the camp bearable when we first became friends.", pushing aside her "what if I give awkward hugs?". He quietly says "That might just be one of the nicest thing's anyone's ever said to me." After 15 seconds or so, he ends the hug and leaves the bus with a "So long, co-star.", smiling. She calls "Bye!" back and wipes off some incoming tears.
After she's said goodbye to everyone else, her stop comes up. She's happy to see the familiar surroundings, AND her parents, but still solemn. She greets them after waving to the leaving bus, her mom asks how it was at camp and she says she... never expected to like it that much. About how all she wanted at first was to just- come back home. But now... she has 4 friends in total, and she finally- got her wish. Her parents are proud of her growth and as they walk home with her, she says "Can I go back next year?"and her dad chuckles while her mom says "Of course. I think they're going to be really happy to see you again."
She thinks back on how life managed to surprise her in such a HUGE way with how quickly you can grow in such a (in hindsight) little time and how she never would've expected to became friends with NIKKI of all people, the first time they met on the bus she didn't say a single word and actually felt intimidated by her loudness. And now they're friends?
She shakes her head with a smile as they approach home and then she sees her house and knows the reunion with her cats is gonna be awesome.
ΓΓΓΓΓΓΓΓΓΓΓΓΓΓ
I genuinely had so much fun writing this, as well as writing more of Mona and Preston's friendship.
This show truly means a lot to me.
