Sun was a scientist even before he became a parasite (shapeshifter), and he had wanted to join the ranks of those studying these parasites. However, he was rejected; the young man was not accepted for that role, but he was offered the chance to become a space researcher, as scientists were needed in that field.
Yet he did not abandon his goals, secretly studying parasites and discovering new species, answers to his questions, and even something far worse. He cannot be called a mad scientist, but his ideas led him to introduce a parasite into his own body.
And then Sun became a Shapeshifter.
Sun also noted that the parasite had improved his vision, so he no longer needed glasses. However, this caused the whites of his eyes to darken, forcing him to wear a hood that kept half his face in shadow.
Unlike Moon, Sun doesn't give in to the inner urge to kill the people on the ship. Instead, he rids the crew of its weakest members. To some extent, he finds this entertaining. He has even claimed several lives not with his own hands, but through those of other crew members—assuming their likeness and manipulating the crew into disposing of the "trash" themselves.
In addition to his own investigations, Sun also studies the personal files of every crew member, sometimes accessing materials he shouldn't have access to—such as surveillance footage or information regarding the infection of others. That is how he learned about Moon, Stella, and the other Impostors on other ships.
And he knew about the connection between Moon and Stella.
Initially as a joke, then seeking an advantage, and later driven by secret desires he himself does not understand, Sun transforms into Moon and approaches Stella. However, she notices that this is not the Moon she knows and tries to uncover the truth about who is impersonating him. She is familiar with his gestures, his choice of words, and so on—even his gaze is completely different.
Moon himself—an Impostor and just as much of a parasite as Sun—saw right through his "colleague" almost immediately; he suspected him of—let's call them—his misdeeds involving Stella, yet he stayed on the sidelines for a long time. He would only have intervened if Sun crossed the line.
