@simonfuckingrileyâ asked for a dark!SC verse starter
There was very little within Shadow Company that escaped Roseâs notice. That was her job after all, to lead, to recruit, to monitor. With Shepherd managing two such different teams, Rose knew that he relied on her to keep a true handle on Shadow Company matters. Even if it wasnât her responsibility, Rose would have had her finger in every pie regardless. It was just her nature, after all.Â
Some issues were far more pressing than others, it was true. The death or serious injury of a soldier would always be a more urgent concern than petty misdemeanors or base gossip. Regardless, Rose didnât miss the small items brought to her attention, even when much larger problems took precedence. She kept them at the back of her thoughts, forever observant, a mental note to assess the issue at a time when she finally had the time.Â
Today, Lieutenant Riley had rejoined SCâs ranks after a prolonged absence recovering from a nasty gunshot wound to the leg. Heâd been living within the 141â˛s infirmary during his recovery as with Shadow Company still establishing itself, the 141 had the much better medical facilities. As one of her founding members of Shadow Company, Rose had been insistent that he received the best medical care available. Sheâd entrusted that job to the 141â˛s chief medical officer Dr. McCoy. She didnât particularly care for the woman on any kind of personal level, but professionally at least she had Roseâs respect.Â
The only troubling news sheâd heard was of the unlikely friendship that had begun between then pair during Rileyâs recovery. Sheâd heard reports of them becoming closer, Rileyâs usually icy temperament melting a little around the medic. It made for a troubling thought. Riley was a soldier that Rose relied upon to be distant and loyal, to be the man who would accomplish his goals no matter what. Bonds between SC and the 141 were something Rose wanted to avoid, but with Riley sheâd expected better. A part of her wondered what magic the McCoy witch had worked on him when so many others had failed before her. It was worrying. Rose had relied on Riley to remove rivals and traitors before, usually on missions that were very much off the record. The thought of him developing a conflict of interests because Dr. McCoy had a penchant for bad boys was simply something she could not stomach.Â
âLieutenant...â The door to her office opened without a knock, Riley striding in with his usual arrogance, albeit this time with a slight limp. She knew that he hated it when she called him to her office, but as a soldier of higher rank Rose knew that he would never refuse her. Riley was a good soldier like that.Â
âItâs excellent to see you in such good health. Forgive me for not preparing a âwelcome homeâ gift basket, but Iâm sure you understand that I was busy juggling other priorities.â She smiles, her voice sarcastic, unable to stop herself from teasing the man a little. Itâs how she gets her kicks these days, getting a rise out of men like Riley. She indicated to the chair opposite her desk with one hand, gesturing for him to sit down. âI called you here for your debrief, although youâll formally meet with the General tomorrow. But before all that, I thought you and I should have a little catch up, chew the fat as it were.â She grins, all demure and innocent, although the tone of her voice betrayed her true suspicions. âHow was your recovery? I hear that the 141 treated you wonderfully. A part of me wondered if youâd ever return to us.â Â

@paxoftheshadowâ continued from [x]
It all happened so fast. Too fast. A blur of movement and confusion that was all over before she could blink. They should never have even been caught in this situation, caught up in a firefight that should never happened. It was all supposed to be so routine, exfilling out from a hot zone and mission that had all gone to plan. Their truck had been hit, theyâd been forced on foot, fighting their way from cover whilst men screamed into their radios for any kind of air support they could find.Â
Roseâs combat skills were rusty, she knew this. She knew her way around a firearm, but firefights like this one were dominated by semi automatic rifles that were no longer her strong suit. It was like being back at Sandhurst, the work of a foot soldier and not an intel operative. She was used to slinking through the world with a fine dress and a pistol, not fighting for her life amongst all of the dust, sand and heat back in her fatigues.Â
Sheâd made a mistake, one that she would have chided herself for if sheâd had the opportunity. Sheâd strayed too far out of cover, tried to push too fast. By rights she should be dead. And yet, something had pushed her to safety, thrown her to the floor with such a jolt that it had felt like a train hitting her.Â
Pax.Â
He was bleeding, his fatigues already beginning to saturate with blood. The sight immediately sent Rose into panic and the feeling alone made her feel so small. She crawled back towards him on her elbows, her head down to avoid the spray of bullets before. Reaching his side, the only words she had tumbled from her shaking lips unchecked.Â
âWhy did you do it? Tell me.âÂ
Because this should have been her, lying there on the ground and faced with the consequences of her own mistake. Her body should have been torn and bleeding, not his. She knew his reason, even before he spoke, but it did nothing to quell the confusion in her mind. Sheâd always known that this might be something he would do... but seeing it? Seeing it hurt in a way she couldnât entirely deal with.Â
âYou fucking stay alive.â More unchecked words fell from her mouth, the rare slur almost foreign on her lips. She didnât have the time or ability on measuring herself now, couldnât waste any of her concentration as she checked his body, ripping open his fatigues to look at the wound. Her shaking hands checked for any remnants of a bullet, her training telling her that if it was still there she couldnât apply pressure to stop the bleeding. Relieved when it at least was clean, her hands reached into her pack, grabbing a wad of gauze and pressing it to the wound, crimson seeping between her fingers.Â
âDonât you dare close your eyes.â Her voice was shaking despite her best efforts. She needed to check his pulse, give him morphine. But he needed a medic, not her. He needed someone to save him, not a bumbling wreck who could barely hold her own stream of thoughts. â... You arenât bloody doing this to me, Paxton. You hear me?!â
Rose or Oli?
GIVE ME TWO CHARACTERS AND MY MUSE WILL TELL YOU WHICH THEY WOULD RATHER DATE.
âRosie.â
Pax froze as the word left his lips, heart thumping a little harder than normal. There was an odd feeling in his gut - like it was all twisted, strangled, constricting. Because he hadnât had to think about. Not once. Not even for a second.
What the fuck did that mean?Â
.
.
.
A few moments later, and he decided it didnât matter. Sometimes⌠Sometimes, people moved on. And somewhere, deep down, Pax knew that heâd understand - even if it shouldnât have mattered if he didnât.
âAlways Rosie.â

âMy apologies for not sooner offering,â Centossa said lighting the womanâs cigarette. âIâve been occupied trying to figure you out, my dear. You must forgive me.â
Centossa clicked his tongue softly. He was amused by the womanâs claims.
âYou wouldnât have told me your scandalous story if you were indeed a foolish girl with a soldier fetish afraid to admit her faults,â Centossa smirked. âAnd hiding any type of microphone under clothes would never be anything a journalist would do in fear of losing information due to lack of clear sound.â
âNo,â Xavier stepped towards the woman. âYouâre not that simple. The heels are a sign of intimidation. You want to be feared and respected. I can see no fault in that. The dark lipstick is a sign of confidence. You arenât afraid to do or say anything that others wouldnât dare. Your shoulders are drawn back. It is the natural stance of someone who holds a leadership or high position. It makes them appear larger which is in turn more threatening. Each step you take is a stride. You have a goal in mind and nothing will stop you from meeting it.â
The agent brought the cigarette to his lips.
âYou hold some sort of high position over this base,â he commented after breathing out the smoke. He smirked devilishly.
âAs for the matter of my work, itâs highly classified. I work for the SIS in creating riot control weapons. I am credited with several inventions involving chemical warfare but, for my own safety and the safety of those I work with, all of that is classified. I can tell you that Iâm here to present some new equipment.â
âIf you need any proof, maâam, you could check my files if you could get my name. I donât think thatâs going to happen.â
âNow I do love a tease...â Rose smirked, talking a nonchalant drag of the now lit cigarette, her head bowing in brief gratitude. She blew out a stream of smoke to her side, avoiding the strangerâs face out of courtesy. âPerhaps I am journalist who values sound quality above everything else and decided to leave her underwear at home?â She threw him a playful wink. âPerhaps x-ray vision is another one of your special skills, hmm?âÂ
She raised her eyebrows during his monologue, impressed to say the least with how he read her. It made for an astute, well thought out analysis to say the least, picking apart her character, or rather the side of her character that she chose to show at any least. It struck her as a thought process that was taught, rather than innate. One that spoke of someone who promised to be more than just the humble engineer he proclaimed to be, no matter how classified his work might be.Â
âYou hold yourself with more confidence than most engineers Iâve met. One might argue that the way you tried to analyse me might be the same as you pour over your test tubes and chemicals, but Iâll bet thereâs more to it all than that.â She took another drag of her cigarette, surveying him with keen eyes. âA lot more, if I had to guess.âÂ
âIf I have as much authority on this base as you suspect, they how about we trade a name for a name, hmm? Because all this banter is wonderful, but my work is rather classified too.âÂ
I know you want to believe thereâs more to me then a killer
but the fact is, thereâs not.
PLOT STARTERS
"Nobody goes there anymore. They say it's haunted or something."
"Tell me you see that as well."
"Don't breathe it in!"
"I like you. You're not running after me with a knife. It's a rare trait to be had, these days."
"There it is again! That symbol! I've been seeing it everywhere."
"If you can't get us out of here, I don't want to hear it."
"So, what're you in for?"
"GET DOWN FROM THERE, YOU'RE GOING TO FALL!"
"What are they doing? Why are they all doing that?"
"Can you hear me? Listen, you need to stop this!"
"Fight it!"
"I know you're in there. Please."
"Incidentally, run for your life."
"It could have something to do with the garbage chute."
"Somebody just left it on the doorstep. I don't know what it is."
"Oh my god, what happened to you? Get inside!"
"Why are you bleeding?!"
"Oh, shall we do something that makes sense? Shall we, say, NOT actively try to get ourselves killed? NAH, you think, let's have some FUN."
"Help me."
"I'm... bleeding. If you had some way to fix that...?"
"Can you stop running AWAY from EVERYTHING?!"
"You're always talking but you never SAY anything."
"We're going to win."
"I always thought it would be... bigger."
"I always thought it would be... better."
"You have NO IDEA what it's like."

All of that paperwork pulled out for nothing. Casting a glance at the small mountain, her eyes cut back to Artemis, mouth a thin pink line. It wasnât like it was much of a statement, but it really could have saved some time had exact intentions been laid out beforehand. Telling herself to let it go, that one day it could be as dramatic as she expected, she laid her hands flat against her desk, trying to come up with some sort of answer.
âShe did not say much about it. As best I can tell, she got a wild hair to wander the base and found her way into my department. Thought some of the soldiers files were craigslist ads.â A pause. âShe called me a burrito.â It was one of the little details from the whole event that stuck with her, that burrito line. It was apropos to nothing, save perhaps to add some depth or believability ot her version of events.
The Russian was not about to say anything about her own weakness, how the encounter left her dry-mouthed and close to heaving. Too much innuendo, too much impliance, too much lust hanging in the air had left the older woman choked. She would not share how she had flung herself backwards to the wall in an ill-born escape attempt â she knows the captain would claw her alive for even thinking of running away while there was an intruder in the pt.
Alright, so maybe it was not so bad to be lacking a security camera in times like that.
âItâs possible that if she is up here often enough, anyone who saw her might have assumed she was on her way out.â It was most likely simple carelessness that led to the whole event. âIf she typically takes the west exit when sheâs done with her business, I can see where people would pick up that idea.â Surely someone would have said something when she took a detour down the wrong hallway, but then she expected so little of some of these soldiersâŚ
âA burrito?â Rose quirked an eyebrow at the statement, her voice incredulous. Although her voice had a pained and confused quality to it, Rose didnât truly doubt Mayfairâs story. In her heart, albeit very cleverly buried of course, Rose knew Juliaâs worth as an operative. She had no reason to lie to her, not over something like this anyway. In truth, the entire conversation was moot. Julia could throw herself to her knees and profess her own guilt and there was little Rose could do about it. With the civilian in question disappearing into what felt like thin air and no real hard evidence to prove what had or had not occurred in that intelligence room, Rose had precious little to go on aside from her own intuition.Â
The humiliation of Shepherdâs stern words still stung her but the rage they had stirred upon Rose leaving his office had waned at least. Now her head was cooler, her emotions more in check. Pinching the bridge of her nose, Rose looked back to the other woman. âIâll need a description of this civilian, as descriptive as you can manage if you please. If she steps foot in this base again, I will haul her insolent little arse into questioning personally.â
With her mind focused on conducting further business, Rose stepped towards Juliaâs desk, pulling a chair up in front of it. She sat down delicately, her hands knotted across the desk. Expectant eyes rested on Julia.
âNow... Since you took the effort to compile such a veritable mountain of paperwork, perhaps youâd like to run through your most pressing of security concerns? Perhaps if we present the General with solutions he might be inclined to overlook this particular oversight.âÂ
A Word About Shadow Company
[Iâve been meaning to pull together some of my general headcanons about Shadow Company into a post for ages, but like with everything itâs been a half formed idea in the back of my head. Even so, now I officially have three shadow company muses (Artemis, Ares and Quinn) I thought that was as good as an excuse as any to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard but you get my drift :P). As a disclaimer, these are my headcanons based on an incredibly vague portrayal in a video game, Iâm not pretending they have to be canon for anyone else, they just so happen to be canon in my head.Â
