All but skidding across the finish line, the Russian stops herself with perhaps more force than is strictly necessary. The ground warps beneath her trainers, dirt and grass displaced by her movements, but this all means nothing to her. Raising herself onto an elbow, she examines her watch, pressing hard to lock in her time.
Rubbish. Pure rubbish. But, at heart, it was her rubbish.
Blowing loose strands of hair from her face, she looked up towards the sky, pausing only to realize that there had been something between her arm and the clouds. Bringing her head back down, she stared at Riley from across the field, studying him in silence. A pity her self-driven attempts to work out might give him a heart attack, knowing what he did about her physical work ethic.
Even so, after a few more moments of silence, she raised her free arm and waved at him from across the way.
š¶- If your muse was forced to get a pet, what would they get? āļø-How often did they get into trouble as a kid?āļø- Whatās their favorite constellation in the night sky?š¼- Would your muse raise an abandoned orphan they found or opt to relocate them to an orphanage instead?
[Pets, probably a dog, cats make him sneeze and he worries about not being there to take care of something like a fish or a lizard. As for breed, something sweet and friendly, possibly energetic. A Lab or Golden Retriever, maybe a Pitbull despite the stigma against them.
Trouble, rarely ever. Jay was a good kid, kept good grades, played on the baseball team. Every so often there would be bullies that would start shit and when they came to blows Jay would defend himself and the way schools are that means heās in trouble too.
Constellation... Virgo or Orion, maybe Sagittarius? Nothing I can really add here.
Raising an orphan. Jay would, assuming he could, raise the child as his own. Of course heād go through all the legal stuff to adopt them, but thatās beside the point.]

āIt looks like you might be sabotaging the HumVee. Take it youāre making me ride in this one, yeah?ā Tess rolled up her sleeves and walked over to stand next to Riley. Vehicles werenāt her area of expertise but if the Lieutenant told her what to do than she could probably be a little useful. She could fetch him tools if anything.Ā āWhat are you trying to fix? Donāt we have people to do this kind of shit? Not that I donāt trust you or anything.āĀ
@simonfuckingriley ll para starters ll accepting!
āI always knew I would settle.ā
Finger curling what little hair she allowed loose, she watched Riley through the mirror. A particularly cheeky grin spread across her lips, the prod more than enough to keep her entertained. Wasnāt such verbal sparring the heart of the phraseĀ ālike an old married couple?ā She certainly hoped it was, or else another turn of phrase had flown well over her head.
āI was thinking about our cover story, actually. Our... Love story, I suppose. Weāll have to throw something cohesive together if weāre going to sell this.ā
She thought of Lara, and her smile widened. If nothing else, Julia hoped she could walk away from this op with some stories to entertain her friend, with something to mortify Riley for the rest of his days. Turning her chair round to look at the Lieutenant in full, she did her best to look coy, to assure them both that she could play a lovestruck wife just as readily as she could a long-suffering harridan. Te bat of her long eyelashes would hopefully help pull the effect together
āIf you sayĀ āmail order bride,ā I will not hesitate to make this mission very difficult on you.ā
Riley ought to be better than that, but she never does know how far he might take things. Folding her hands neatly in her lap, she carries on.
āI was thinking we say a friend introduced us -- someone we both know for real. Say that itās John, or Gary... Unless you have some other idea?ā

What would you do if choosing Riley meant ending your career?
She pauses, looks down because itās simpler than meeting the question head on. The truth is that she knows the answer the minute sheās asked, but somehow saying it out loud is so much harder. She swallows, biding her time and dragging out the inevitable.Ā
āOne thing Iāve learned is that ambitions feel hollow without someone to share them with. Choosing my career over Riley might feel noble, like itās the honourable, proper thing to do. But it would quickly feel like a mistake... probably the biggest mistake of my life.āĀ
A pause. An admission of just how much sheās changed. Heās never once pushed, but the love she feels has left a lasting imprint on her life, one thatās changed her perspective for the better. Sheās thankful.Ā
āMe and Riley are in it for the long haul. Keeping my career isnāt worth losing him.āĀ

The sun is only beginning its journey into the sky, throwing out bright orange rays across the canyon that forms a backdrop to her property.Ā
The sight always makes her heart swell, the dusty plains her ancestral home. Sheās lived on this ranch her entire life, was taught to tend and herd cattle as soon as she was old enough to sit in a saddle. Her home is generations old, carved with memories of those who came before her, the wood beams themselves etched with familiarity. Since they day her father died and left the ranch in her keeping, sheās been fighting. Fighting to protect her land from bandits, from horse thieves and even from the Mayor who seems so desperate to call her land his own.
Sheād rather die than give it up.Ā
She lives here alone for the most part, aside from her childhood friend Andy, a soldier injured in duty who now works the farm and is an extra pair of hands around a rifle when itās needed. In truth, Lara doesnāt want to contemplate life on the ranch without him, her heart never truly cut out to be alone. Sheās not the solitary type, has never truly been one to live in complete isolation, however at odds that might be with her chosen occupation and lifestyle.Ā
Sheās a contradiction, but she refuses to change, even in the face of a world that seems unable to truly accept her. Perhaps thatās why she finds so much solace in the arms of an outlaw, condemned by society and by her friends. A man Andy has threatened so many times to report to the sheriff, and yet never does out of his love for her.Ā
Today sheās setting out to ride the perimeter of her property, to test the fences and count her herd. Itās farm hand work, but in reality Lara needs the distraction, her body feeling heavy within the saddle of her horse. She doesnāt sleep well, never has for as long as she can remember. Her dreams are always nightmares, plagued with flashing memories that donāt make sense. There are always faces of people she doesnāt remember come morning, nonsensical words thrown at her in anger. Thereās often violence, pain, sometimes even torture. Sometimes she sees the people she cares for die, helpless and grounded to the spot whilst the phantom faces loom over them.Ā
The dreams almost always end in her own death. The images are always so real in her minds eye, often places around her home and property. Sometimes itās a quick gunshot by the perimeter fence, sending the world hurtling into black and her mind back into consciousness. Other times itās a sharp stab to her gut, a tormenting shrill laugh as she slips on her own blood, crawling helplessly across the bare floorboards of her sitting room.Ā
The dreams always feel hauntingly real... until theyāre not. Somehow, in the light of day the phantom fade and she can forget. Until the night comes and the ghosts return.Ā
She hasnāt got far until she sees him, riding onto her land like he owns it. Itās the confidence and swagger of a man who knows that heās wanted, even when she sees Andy unceremoniously greet him at the fence. Unable to stop a smile spreading across her features, Lara spurs her horse into action, riding out to meet him and not entirely caring if she seems eager. Itās been months, too long even by their standards. She isnāt afraid to show him that sheās missed him, if only a little.Ā
Itās the smirk that gets her, followed by the deep, husky voice that has been her undoing so many times before. She pulls her horse to a stop, the animal letting out a soft huff in what could almost sound like disapproval. In the background Lara can see Andy shaking his head and returning to work, but she ignores him, instead pushing an easy smile across her features.Ā
āMayor is just trying to squirrel away all the land he can, but apparently telling himĀ ānoā isnāt exactly something heās used to.ā She shrugs, giving him a knowing smirk.Ā āI may or may not have been holding my pistol at the time. Yāknow, for emphasis.ā Leaning back in her own saddle, she tries her hardest to appear nonchalant, although the flirty undertone in her voice gives her away.Ā āBesides, youāre the one who keeps on disappearing to play outlaw. I have to fuck with someone while youāre gone.ā
Dating your lieutenant is unethical?
Ask my muse anything!
āYes. Whatās your point?Ā
Yāknow, Iāve played by the rules my entire life. I was a straight A student in school and college, I got a first class degree at University and went on to become a commissioned officer straight out of Sandhurst. From then on, I was a bloody picture perfect career soldier who followed orders, respected the chain of command and gave everything to her job. Genuinely everything. I missed my brotherās wedding for the job, my nieceās first birthday. Hell, my fiance left me because the Her Majestyās Armed Forces had become my life.Ā
Ā The 141 should be no different. Fraternisation is still wrong at this level, hell maybe with stakes this high it is even worse than before. The chain of command is still integral to who we are and sleeping with my superior officer is an offence that would likely see us both discredited professionally.Ā
I know all of that. Iāve spent too many nights agonising over my choices, punishing myself for stumbling over so large a hurdle. Iāve tortured myself over my decision to cross that line with him, because even if at the time I didnāt think that I would ever... fall for Riley, I should have still appreciated that a physical relationship would change our professional dynamic forever.Ā
But now that Iām here, now that I love him... That isnāt something I can give up for this job. I sacrificed everything for the military, my family, my personal life, my best friend. Iāve given every inch of myself to the 141, to a point where Iām pretty sure that with the risks that I take, this job will kill me someday. And Iām prepared to give all of that with no complaints. But Riley? I canāt give that man up. I wonāt.Ā
I nearly lost him once and it felt like Iād lost a part of myself. Sometimes heās the one person who makes me feel human, who keeps me grounded. Heās the man I can turn to when itās all too much, my safe space when I feel like this soldiering is tearing me apart. Heās my weakness, yes, but heās also my strength. Iām not sure if I could do half of what I do these days without him.Ā
If that makes me unethical, then so be it.ā
