it's so funny to me that conservatives think the reason university students become more liberal is because of the actual course material and not like. the fact that universities in the US are oftentimes the first place Americans are introduced to a walkable environment with affordable health care, with community spaces for any affiliation under the sun where they give you free resources and cheap food. with included public transit and opportunities for training in your field of choice. and you realize that for how much you're spending on tuition/taxes, yeah, you do deserve these things, it would be insane not to have those. and then you graduate and go back to having to buy a car to drive 20 minutes to the grocery store.

You actually had all that shit in college? I had none of it and now I’m kinda mad about it lol. I got radicalized by… poverty. I almost died from an infection because I couldn’t afford to go to the campus nurse. All our public places were closed by 6pm, including the cafeteria, even though classes went till 11pm. Campus wasn’t remotely walkable, and I wanted to die everyday. I didn’t even get an advisor to help with my schedule, let alone opportunities to intern anywhere. And I regularly Jean Valjean’d from the cafeteria because I couldn’t afford the meal plan. I also got in trouble at one point for writing a paper on how my college was literally a corporation and not an institution of higher learning. The provost did not care for that.

Plenty of highly intelligent people end up getting sucked in to cults because they just wanted people to hang out with. There are antivaxxer nurses. Your ability to act on empirical reason breaks down fast if your social and emotional needs aren't being met.

As we head into multiple viral outbreaks including potentially H5N1, I am begging people to think carefully about how they talk about these viruses. It has been exhausting since the start of COVID hearing people talk about "only people with pre existing conditions" as if that makes everything okay. I am worth something, we are worth something, our lives matter.
