For my final project, I decided to follow the art assignment “Off”. The concept was to use the blackness of a screen to reflect what it sees. To me, I thought this assignment was very current with everything that is happening. Now more than ever we have to use the technology that we have with us and it can leave us being stuck indoors and stuck succumbed to learning about everything happening around us. This assignment allowed for me to just go outside and quite literally turn off everything happening in this world and just focus on the here and now. It gave me the peace I needed and allowed for me to just focus on the plants flowing and the clouds moving. I hope this can give everyone peace as well. 

Postmodernism art is a new way in which artists can make their audience question art even further and also provide a whole new way of expression. They go outside the norms that were set for artists and present their art in a whole new fashion that deters from the traditional settings. This can be through completely altering the space they were given in a museum or not even using that kind of space at all. Everything postmodernist artists do is just expanding everything we perceive as art and making those who don’t understand art, question it even further. Postmodernist artists also reject most of what modernism artists set as boundaries and even look at the “high” and “low” perceptions on art and culture and let everything be used in art; even if that’s trash and scraps. In this type of art, anything can be used and that can bring even more creativity and expression. 

At first it was difficult to create this project but I began to realize that I should bring what’s happening in our world into an artistic sense. Since the biggest emotion everyone must have is fear I felt like that was the perfect chance to show that. I enjoyed playing with different lights and colors in this piece to really enhance the emotion of fear and mess with the mood of the video by changing it from black and white to color. Additionally, I purposefully made the heart harder to see because even though you can’t really see it you know it’s there the same as with fear. The heart served as a way to both be a symbol for fear and also a way in which I can use two different mediums(3D and 4D).

Upon reading Roselee Goldbergs’ ‘Performance: A Hidden History’ and watching Marina Abramovic’s “The Artist is Present”, I could understand performance art in a whole new way. Performance art is a way of combining many forms of art into one and even allow artists to create an even larger audience to appreciate art and create a different take from it. For Marina Abramovic, she was creating art that was bringing attention and an artwork that is usually not seen as much. By using her own body and the bodies of others and performing in front of others at shows, it was creating a whole new way of expanding the idea of art and creating expression. Her work shocked everyone but the best art is meant to shock others and then appreciated later and that’s exactly what she did. At the beginning of her work, many questioned if what she was doing was considered art but further into her career she got more recognition and got less questioning which she said herself she kind of missed. Even though there has been a long history of performance art, it was still not as accepted as it is starting to be now. Marina Abramovic and many other performance artists provided a new medium for artists to accept and perform that breaks more boundaries in art which is sometimes essential in the art world.

Overall I liked how aesthetically pleasing my video turned out with the vibrant colors bouncing off the contrast of blacks and how cohesive the two clips look together as if they weren’t completely separate. I felt that this project allowed for me to branch into a different way of displaying art; I already had experience in making videos but not in the more abstract artistic way that I tried to do with this one and felt it was very interesting to try.

For an artist that decides to do any sort of art but more specifically video art, paying attention to time and the specific types of times can be very important. Upon learning in this chapter, time can be many different things whether it be dimensions of time, actual time, implied time and recorded time. The piece I really resonated with and thought was a great deception of time was Robert Irwin’s garden for the Getty Museum and how he knew that his garden and terrain would eventually change due to time and carved into the floor, “Always changing, never twice the same.” To both imply the actual garden itself and also his work as an artist. Time can have many different meanings depending on what work the artist wants to achieve whether it’s how Star Wars had a storyboard for each scene creating implied time, Andy Goldsworthy’s environmental sculptures creating actual time or Sally Mann’s Immediate Family over the course of 8 years for recorded time. All of these examples are what all artists have to consider when making their art. Additionally, motion has many different forms and can really change the emotions derived from the piece and the whole idea of it as well. I’ve learned that time and motion are essential for artists to expand their art and using those types of time and motion can really make an impact.

Depression is one of the most evil mental illnesses out there; it can leave one feeling lost, hopeless and having little energy for life. For my series, I depicted this illness through a movie that captures it perfectly: Perks of Being a Wallflower. The 10 GIFs show the highs and lows the main character(Charlie) lives through as he struggles with the disorder. The gifs that are saturated and have a pink hue are the ones where he feels most alive and the gifs that are black and white are depicting his worst times and his cries for help. Additionally, a main component made with the movie is that Charlie is typing out his story in a typewriter so for my GIFs I decided to add subtitles to every one of my GIFs with a typewriter effect and to explain the scene happening. My GIFs should give everyone a glimpse into the world of Charlie and also be able to have an idea as to how awful and scary the reality of depression is.
