Dante et Virgile, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, 1850

William-Adolphe Bouguereau, a prominent French academic artist, was well known for his classic and sensual style. One of his most notable works, "Dante et Virgile", depicts a scene from Dante's "Divine Comedy", where Dante is accompanied by the Roman poet Virgil through the circles of hell (this particular scene taking place in the eighth circle-- the circle for fasifiers and counterfeiters), and witness a fight between two damned souls- capocchio (the dark-haired man, being wrestled to his knees) and gianni (the man above, attacking).

Bouguereau's approach to this painting was his way of exploring the aesthetic boundaries-- his adept manner to depicting the muscles, tendons, and teeth elaborated the intensity of the scene. The attention to detail to the anatomy, and skillful use of light and colour, of the two figures [in the foreground] excentuates the terribilita or 'horrific' style that Bouguereau never touched on again.

This painting is also a testament to his [Bouguereau's] deep knowledge of classical literature and mythology. By choosing to portray a moment from "Divine Comedy", he pays homage to one of the great classics of Western literature and expresses the complex imagery and symbolism presented in Dante's epic poem. He invites the audience to reflect on themes of sin, redemption, and the human condition through his depiction of the scene.
