Recently reread the absolutely wonderful Buck & Cranberry series by @cal-daisies-and-briars. It's is one of my favourite rereads when I'm looking for something comforting that isn't just pure fluff. And when I was deciding what to work on next in my journey to get back into drawing, I decided it needed to be this moment when Buck and Cranberry meet.

Cranberry, trots a few paces over to Buck, sits in front of him, ears perked and tail wagging, waiting. “Hi, there,” Buck mumbles. She nudges her head forward onto his lap, worming her nose under his hand, intent on receiving attention. Buck moves his hand to scratch the side of her jaw. She squints her big, brown eyes contentedly. Buck likes the way her silky fur feels under the calloused skin of his hands. The full weight of her head rests on Buck’s thigh, and something about it feels grounding. “You’re a sweet girl, aren’t you?” He whispers to Cranberry. In response, Cranberry’s tail picks up speed.

The thought strikes him so hard his head starts to ache. It’s not his fault he’s in this situation. There’s nothing he can do to change it. He doesn’t have to feel guilt for this. Either he’ll die here or move on. He might as well immerse himself in the meantime. He doesn’t want to think about anything else!

“It means a lot to me, too,” Buck tells Bobby, pushing the doubt aside. 

YAY THANKS! ---

A literal, physical wave of pain rolls through Buck. He can't help the tears that form in his eyes. He's just gotten over crying. He doesn't want to do it again.

“Me too,” he responds shakily.

“And I would be really scared if you or Daddy were going to get hurt too,” Nico continues. “Or Grandma, or Chris, or Auntie Maddie…”

He lists off what amounts to probably every single person he knows and loves.

“But mostly I think you and Daddy.”
