I didnât end up using this sideblog nearly as much as I thought I would, and Iâm not really creating enough original content as I thought I would. Iâm going to either delete this sideblog or rebrand it to multifandom (havenât decided yet). Just in case, please follow my main @regrettable-username !!
Still love AM and disney but it just feels weird to have a sideblog I barely use, especially when I have to use my main for messaging/commenting/asks anyway.

I personally headcanon Jonah as ace aro just because I relate to him so much, especially his attitude towards relationships. Iâve never shared that before, I always been afraid of hate for it, though I suppose anonymous doesnât fully count.
Yes!! Aro/ace spectrum Jonah is my favorite label-specific head canon. I like allowing him to exist without labels, but I also like allowing him to exist on the ace spectrum. I have said it on here plenty of times before! I prefer the idea of letting him exist without labels a little bit more, mainly because of how young he is and I think itâs okay for him to not have a strict identity at that point. But for at least this point in his life, I definitely see him being aromantic. He might not always be, and thatâs okay too because your identity can change as you do, but at this point - I think thatâs a perfectly valid way to think of that character!Â
Also you shouldnât be afraid to speak your opinions and head canons. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the hc that Jonah is ace/aro, just like thereâs nothing wrong with the hc that heâs bi or anything else. As long as you are respectful to the show itself and to other people in the fandom and the experiences of the communities represented in your head canons, your opinions are valid. So if you ever do say anything about it and it results in hate, please just ignore it! Or block the person/anon who is sending you hate! Because we are all just here to enjoy this show and the fact that people get so bent out of shape over head canons and ship wars is honestly pathetic.

I wrote a fic based off of this post. Jonah Beck is autistic, donât even try to change my mind.
This is also based off my own story of self-diagnosis, which is 100% valid, especially since there are many barriers to getting an official diagnosis (money, fear of discrimination, etc). It felt like Jonah would likely go through a similar experience based on his circumstances.
I already posted this on my main @regrettable-usernameâ, but since this is officially my AM sideblog I figured it belonged here. Itâs just a short oneshot, and itâs also attached below the break on this post if you want to read it that way!
âHey, Cyrus, wait up a sec!â
Cyrus turned around to see who was calling out. Rushing out behind him was Jonah Beck, who didnât even bother to zip up his backpack when the final bell rang. Cyrus reached down to pick up a paper that had fallen out.
âThanks,â Jonah said out of breath, taking the paper from him. âMy head just isnât really in the right place today.â
âAre you okay?â Cyrus asked. He noticed that the last few days Jonah hadnât been talking as much when they all hung out as a group, and he seemed to be fidgeting a lot more too.
First of all, who cares, it is tv programming that any one can get with the right services, so it really shouldnât matter, but since it seems to to you, let me explain a few things.
One, the older people watching this show were kids once who were underrepresented on their tv programs. Now this show comes out, and they are able to support it because it is helping the current generation learn things about themselves. Moreover, adults who love Disney but were never represented now get to watch a show from a channel they love that has characters like them.
Two, the demographic may be for middle schoolers and young teens, but a demographic is only an average of the viewers. Lots of things have viewers outside their demographic, and you know what? It is THAT personâs decision what they get to watch, not you and not any body else.
Three, DISNEY IS A KIDS CHANNEL. All their shows are going to centered toward kids. That DOES NOT MEAN that people should stop watching a channel just because they get older. You and societyâs idea that you can outgrow anything but clothes and personal preferences is harmful for EVERY PERSON ON THE PLANET NO MATTER WHAT AGE.
Four, if you canât respect the people that worked hard to continue the show and give the cast and crew the respect they deserve, YOU LEARNED ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FROM THIS SHOW. ANDI MACKâS OVERALL THEME IS ACCEPTANCE, ACCEPTANCE OF YOURSELF, ACCEPTANCE OF OTHERS, AND THE IDEA THAT EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT AND THAT IS OKAY.
You are destroying the heart and soul of the show you claim to care for by sending hate on people who have done more for this show and younger people in its fandom than Iâve seen people do in real life. They are taking time out of their day, to come here because they enjoy this show and they enjoy helping the younger people who are trying to figure themselves out. Nothing you are doing is okay, and if you canât treat people with respect, you are not part of this friendom.

âHey, Cyrus, wait up a sec!â
Cyrus turned around to see who was calling out. Rushing out behind him was Jonah Beck, who didnât even bother to zip up his backpack when the final bell rang. Cyrus reached down to pick up a paper that had fallen out.
âThanks,â Jonah said out of breath, taking the paper from him. âMy head just isnât really in the right place today.â
âAre you okay?â Cyrus asked. He noticed that the last few days Jonah hadnât been talking as much when they all hung out as a group, and he seemed to be fidgeting a lot more too.
âActually, can we talk?â Jonah responded. âNot here?"
âYeah, of course,â Cyrus said. âThe Spoon? I have some allowance left for this week, and we can split some baby taters.â
âIâm not that hungry right now. Wanna just walk around for a bit?â
So the two of them headed down the sidewalk, vaguely in the direction of their houses, but in no particular rush. It took a minute before Jonah said anything.
âCyrus, you know a lot about psychology and stuff. Have you ever heard anything aboutâŚself diagnosis?â Jonah asked quietly.
âUm, I guess it depends on the particular case. But my parents are professionals, so I only know about whatâs in the DSM.â
âYou can actually access the DSM online for free,â Jonah said. âBut itâs sort of difficult to understand. And all the other websites, I donât know, I was just always told that you shouldnât believe something unless an expert told you about it.â
Cyrus stopped on the sidewalk, turning to face his friend.
âJonah, whatâs going on?â
Jonah suddenly shifted his eyes to the ground. There was a long pause, and he took a few deep breaths.
âI think IâmâŚautistic.â
Jonah quickly started walking again. Cyrus stayed for a moment to let the information sink in, then ran after his friend.
âWait! Jonah!â Cyrus called, until he caught up to him.
âJonah, I just need more information,â Cyrus said. âWhy do you think youâre autistic?â
âI donâtâjust, right now, Iâve been looking at this for a while. Ever since my panic attack at your shiva, I started looking things up. I wanted to know why I was having them and how to stop them from getting worse. And when I was looking through everything, I found this Youtube video about autism. I donât know why I clicked it, but I did. And everything lined up. I like repetition. Iâm a picky eater. I always feel like Iâm mimicking people. Iâm better texting than I am at talking. The first time I met Andi, I wouldnât even have recognized her if she wasnât wearing her duct tape shoes. Apparently that's face-blindness. And whenever Iâm in any kind of social situation, I have no idea what Iâm doing,â Jonah said, his voice getting tired.
âReally? But youâre Jonah Beck, youâre one of the coolest guys in the entire school,â Cyrus said.
âI am Jonah Beck, but everything that I say to people feels like a different version of me. And I make up all these scripts in my head without even realizing it. And even though I know tons of people, and I can have conversations with tons of people, you guys are the first real friends Iâve had since elementary school,â Jonah said.
âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to doubt you,â Cyrus said.
âItâs okay. Iâve been doubting myself a lot the past few weeks,â Jonah replied.
âIs there anything else I should know about?â
âI think I might have some sensory issues. I know those are a common trait in autistic people, but I canât think of anything specific for me. Except maybe the food thing. I was so overwhelmed when I saw that table at your shiva,â Jonah said.
âTaste is a sense. Or maybe itâs texture and smell too.â
âI just wish it was more exact. Like, I know itâs supposed to be a spectrum, but I feel like a fraud admitting this to you. And yet, it feels right.â
Cyrus nodded. âThatâs okay,â he said, âyou donât need to have it all figured out. Have you looked into getting a diagnosis?â
âI want to, more than anything. Even if I donât have autism I have something. I want to know what it is. And I want to get help with my panic attacks. But I canât afford it,â Jonah said.
âDo you have health insurance? I can see if my parents cover it.â
âNo! If you tell them, then theyâll just talk to my parents about it. Even if we can afford a diagnosis, we canât afford any therapy. I donât want them to worry about me, they have enough to worry about,â Jonah said.
âAlright. This is your thing, and I believe you. Just let me know what I can do,â Cyrus said.
âThanks, Cyrus,â Jonah replied. âYouâre a great friend.â
Jonah pulled Cyrus into a bro hug, but Cyrus quickly pulled back.
âWait, I know some autistic people donât like to be touched. Is this okay?â
âCyrus, if I initiate something, itâs fine. But thanks for asking,â Jonah said, smiling.
âJust making sure,â Cyrus said. âWait, where are we?â Looking around, there were only the same rows of houses that all looked like each other, and the street names didnât seem familiar at all.
âWe got distracted and walked too far, didnât we?â Jonah asked, already knowing the answer.
âLooks like it. Are you any good with directions?â Cyrus asked.
âNope.â
"Guess weâll figure it out as we go along,â Cyrus said.
Jonah smiled. Cyrus was right. As they started walking back, there was only one emotion running through Jonahâs head: relief. He may not know where he was headed, but for once in his life he knew enough about himself to feel grounded. And that was all he ever really wanted.
(or, what i wish people understood about the autism spectrum)
so im sure everyone is sick of me only talking about jonah but heâs so important to me as an autistic person because i cant think of any character that better represents a non stereotyped autistic experience (even though its not actually canon). and i really want people to understand this because the science genius, socially awkward stereotype is so prevalent that a lot of neurotypical people dont even recognize autistic traits that are obvious to anyone on the spectrum
so heres an incomplete list of reasons why jonah is diagnosably autistic based on two main diagnostic criteria from the DSM 5 (also this is obviously influenced by my experience which are not universal)
Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts
Jonah has been known to have difficulties expressing his feelings and often prefers less verbal or explicit ways of expressing himself (songs for Andi, arm wrestling with Buffy, quiet acceptance of Cyrus)
âObliviousâ is really a code word for âisnât able to interpret social cues the way other people expect him toâ
Jonah sometimes misses other peoples humor like the iconic danish moment or âwhy is that funnyâ talking about Andi with Buffy and Cyrus
He doesnât always understand other peopleâs expectations of him or appropriate expectations for other people (see jamber, jandi, jibby)
Anxiety is actually very common in autistic people as a result of social difficulties (aka the only reason I was diagnosed at age 20)
Jonah is popular and talkative but most complex social situations are very overwhelming to him (Buffy and Cyrus fighting, Andi ignoring him, his grudge on TJ)
Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities
Ultimate frisbee anyone?? Guitar/music could maybe even be a special interest now
Jonah doesnât want to wear any costume!! He likes his normal clothes that are comfortable for him which is totally valid
He doesnât like change in his relationships with people. When he and Andi were friends, he wanted to stay friends and when they were dating, he wanted to stay together. Also maybe why he held on to his TJ grudge for so long.
Sensory issues could be part of his panic attacks?? Like noise/crowds were definitely present at the bash mitzvah, pancake day and the shiva. Idk sensory stuff rarely makes sense
sorry this is so long but its really important to me to explain this so people can better understand how autism exists as a spectrum. because there are a lot of people who experience autism in these ways but a lack of understanding of the breadth of the spectrum often leads to our struggles being invalidated and ignored. and jonah is such a good character to show this with, my ultimate dream would be for him to get help for his panic attacks and in the process get a diagnosis. but that wonât happen so here i am doing it myself!! i would greatly appreciate reblogs to educate more people and please feel free to ask any questions. anyways thanks for reading this mess!!
Iâm autistic too and OP thank you so much for this! This sums it up prefectly. Iâve been trying to put into words why Jonah Beck is autistic and everyone please look at this!!
