which tbh I think I love Free so much because what they're saying is almost more vulnerable than saying "I love you," in a way. I love you has some sense of certainty to it, and it's a confession of wholeheartedly positive feelings. But everything they say in Free is beautifully uncertain and fragile. They trust each other enough that they feel safe confessing all of their uncertainty and confusion and hesitancy when it comes to each other, trusting that the other person will understand where they're coming from. They're not just confessing how they care about each other, they're doing an honest and thorough evaluation of where they're at as people and in their relationship.
like idkkkk man I think "I have feelings for you" actually feels a lot less vulnerable than "Why does it feel like I can tell you anything? / All the secrets that keep me in chains and / all the damage that might make me dangerous / You got a dark side, guess you're not the only one" or "time goes by, and I lose perspective / yeah, hope only hurts, so I just forget it / but you're breaking through all the dark in me when I thought that nobody could [...] I don't trust it, but I want to".
like it takes so much vulnerability and trust to be able to lay everything out so blatantly like that. especially because they're supposed to be enemies on two different sides of a war... and they're literally telling each other "I don't know if this is a good idea and it might blow up in our faces, but I want to try anyway because I care about you so much."
