Deity Altar: An altar to a patron deity should reside in the bedroom, so that the appropriate morning and evening prayers can occur with minor disturbance. That way, even if you forget throughout the day, you will always eventually touch home base with your Patrons.

Personal Altar: For privacy reasons, a personal altar should also reside in the bedroom. Unless you live well and truly alone, and have few guests over, an altar should probably reside in a space both deeply private and with a good deal of space for ritual work, and an altar in a bedroom serves both those needs.

Ancestral Altar: The ancestors should be welcomed into the kitchen for two reasons; one, the kitchen is a lively place, and it will allow them to mingle with the rest of the family through out the day, and two, it will make sharing food much easier if you can portion out their meal alongside everyone else’s. Win/Win, honestly.

Saints’ Altars: Listen, I don’t get this one, but I’m getting a whole lot of Bathroom vibes. I think it’s the holy water thing. Spiritual baths. This might be specific to Black people spirituality, but an altar in or around a bathtub makes a lot of sense. I’ve built altars in shower nooks before.

Ocean Deity/Spirit Altars: Same thing. Bathroom.

Cthonic Deity/Spirit: If they are not your patron, so you don’t need to see them, hear me out; basement altar. Eh? Eh? Like a dirt nap, but less serious /j

Craft Deity/Spirit: Listen, any god, goddess, deity, or spirit you work with that has weaving, sewing, or spinning aspects should sit in the living room with your yarn stash you keep on the floor. That’s just what it is. Give them a chair and a cup of tea. They’re stuck with you anyway.

Okay, so these are kind of jokey, but consider how moving your altars around your living space and your home would affect your craft. This isn’t possible for everyone– a lot of us live with parents, or roommates, or housemates, or otherwise lack the kind of space we want, but there is a real tie in your home to the parts of your lifestyles, and investigating those relationships makes us better witches and pagans. Obviously, there are no right answers, but I am very confident that no one can sway me in any direction otherwise, just as I imagine no one will be able to sway you once you get into a comfortable and well established routine. I would like to start dissecting owl pellets to get a few tinier bones. Any good places to buy them from?

This is what I’ve heard so far from my Kenyan relatives! Particularly from the Nairobi area! Some of this is shared with other cultures and some of it is uniquely Kenyan™️

Don’t pick up a coin you find in the street– could get cursed.

Some villages have open casket funerals where you grieve a lot– moaning, wailing, crying, throwing yourself dramatically over the coffin. Then you dance and celebrate the person’s life after.

I’ve yet to learn actual names of the local faiths/practices, if they have them. Sometimes they are not even seen as “religion” but a facet of daily life.

The local practices involve magic (they call it ‘medicine’ sometimes) used to manipulate the world to the caster’s will.

- if you go around a fig tree 7 times you will get a different gender (did this multiple times as a lil baby trans trying to overcome their body dysphoria. Did not work)

- theres a certain hill where things move in opposition to gravity in Ukambani. I forgot the name of the place. Locals say its because spirits live in the hill

- there’s people called nightrunners who run around naked at night and poop on the doorsteps of ppl they don’t like lol (this one is a little offensive because people use it as propaganda to make the community where this happens seem inferior to others. Tribalism and all)

-Don’t jump over food.

-Don’t tell people what you are doing they might just make it not to happen

-Love potions/spells work. It’s called ‘kukaliwa chapati’ or they use ‘kamote’ charms.

-You can’t sell your ancestral home. The one you inherit from your father.
