That’s it, folks! Tomorrow is our last show. Our academic quarter is about to end, and since DJ Ari$ha is graduating (weep!) tomorrow is probably the last time we’re going to be hosting Radio PU$$Y P0PPIN.

It’s been an incredible experience. I was driving up the 101, listening to 106.1 (the Bay Area’s best hip hop station) and came to realize that after two hours of airplay, only one female artist was played (Nicki Minaj, of course). I knew that there is some extraordinary female talent out there and briefly entertained the idea of hosting a radio station playing exclusively female hip-hop and rap artists.

I approached DJ Ari$ha with the idea, and I was ecstatic when she agreed to be my co-DJ, since she’s the most knowledgeable music junkie I know. And ever since, it’s been a blast. There’s nothing more rewarding than celebrating the success and talents of your fellow females. I hope we’ve exposed you to some of the great artistry out there, and we’d like to thank our followers for their support.

Here’s some of the good stuff to listen to before tomorrow evening. We’d really love for you to tune in (6:00 p.m. Pacific) and join us for our last hurrah.

I wrote a column for the UCSD Guardian this week about the radio show. Check it out!

Here’s an excerpt:

“PU$$Y P0PPIN” is the name of a radio show on KSDT that I’m co-hosting with my friend Mina. We go by the names DJ Minamator and DJ Ari$ha, and play nothing but female hip hop from 4 to 5 p.m. every Friday.

Mina approached me with the idea for the show over winter break, and I couldn’t resist immediately making a sprawling Spotify playlist of lady MCs and agreeing to the gig. Since then, I’ve discovered more incredible artists than I could have possibly imagined. Last week’s theme of “up and comers” and this week’s theme of “female rappers from around the world,” forced me to delve deep into the pockets of the Internet to pull out women that I probably wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise.

This excerpt sums up why I adore Kitty Pryde:

“Bitch, to me, is supreme. A lot of times people use the word ‘bitch,’ because they can’t find a word that’s stronger than that. So if you use the word ‘bitch’ you know you mean something when you say that.”

Here’s a personal favorite from our old school-themed show today. The fact that most people don’t know who Da Brat is anymore, even though she was the first solo female rapper to have a platinum-selling album, is seriously upsetting to me, and totally indicative of how people perceive women in the hip hop world. Da Brat has some serious Snoop Dogg flow on this track, but way less recognition for it. Give her a listen, y’all!
