this danlou scene is one that i really enjoy but i dont see it talked about often enough :(

i think its a very interesting reference - first or all it gives us the context of the outside world, provides an insight into what daniel is interested in as a journalist (the zodiac killer was on the rise in 70s san francisco) and makes for an explanation why he was interested in interviewing vampires at all

famously the zodiac killer also only murdered people he considered "sinners" which is interesting to look at for both daniel and louis. daniel is, simply speaking, a junkie & and hes also queer, it makes sense for him to be scared of the zodiac killer because he could by all means be considered a sinner due to his lifestyle. louis, on the other hand, being attributed the name of the zodiac killer when we as viewers know that he struggles with religious guilt and also that in the 70s he had a period of fucking and killing young boys every day..... louis takes on the role of someone who tries to dictate the lives of others while his own morality remains twisted

i've been meaning to rebind my copy of tva ever since i got it (from a used bookstore, it's falling apart) but in retrospect thank god i haven't yet because it would've impeded throwing that godforsaken book at the wall across from my bed as hard as possible when i finished it
