META : CLINT AND HIS DOG, LUCKY

here’s a little background before i get started ! clint has a dog named lucky. next to kate, lucky is clint’s anchor. he came into clint’s life at a very critical point in his timeline and i think it’s not too far fetched to say that lucky is one of the things that’s kept him alive through his lowest moments. he’s very special to him and he deserves his own post, so here it is !

TIMELINE & BEGINNINGS :

towards the beginning of his trouble with the russian mafia, clint had some business to conduct with some of the members at an makeshift casino located in a chinese restaurant. he planned to pay overdue rent in the name of all the tenants in his building. on his way there he runs into two members on the street with their dog ( lucky, known as arrow at the time ), and clint stop to ask if he can pet him. of course, the dog is very intrigued by the half eaten piece of pizza he’s is holding in his hand. minutes later, clint gets into a huge brawl with the other mafia members inside the casino, and they make their way out to the street. one of arrow’s owners shoots clint in the arm as he attempts to escape, and arrow bites the man in retaliation. because of this, the man kicks arrow into traffic, and arrow is hit by a car, leaving him severely injured. clint can’t bear to leave the dog to die in pain, so he rushes to the closest animal hospital. the veterinarian at the hospital needs to list an owner on the dog’s paperwork, and upon reading his collar, clint can’t deny that arrow sounds like he’d belong to him. so clint agrees to take ownership of arrow, renaming him lucky, and takes him back to his apartment to give him time to heal. ever since then, lucky and clint have been family. at the climax of the saga between clint and the russians, lucky is caught in the crossfire of a confrontation, leaving him shot and on the verge of death. luckily, he makes a full recovery, and has lived a healthy and happy life from then on.

CURRENT : 

• clint and kate share lucky at this point in time. basically like a child of divorce. with all the things happening with kate in los angeles with her private investigation practice, etc. she needs him for moral support. clint misses him dearly but makes sure to steal him from time to time. now that clint is spending more time on the west coast with kate he gets to see lucky more often. lots of puppy kisses for clint.

FUN FACTS :

• in clint’s narrative, lucky serves as a direct parallel to him. lucky was abused by his previous owners, like clint had been by his guardians during childhood, and he’s overcome a multitude of grave setbacks, but is still going strong despite all of it. m.att f.raction uses this in an issue of his series in the form of an episode of a fictional children’s show, where two dogs ( representative of clint and kate ) go on an adventure uncannily similar to things happening in their lives.

• lucky’s breed is still unconfirmed, but most go with him being a sort of golden retriever / labrador mix. he is missing his left eye due to his initial major injury, and he walks with a bit of a limp from time to time when he experiences the lasting effects from things like old fractures etc.

• lucky is Not a well behaved dog, however, he is extremely loyal to clint and his friends. he is allowed out of the house by himself because clint knows he will always return home. he is very distrustful of new people due to his past abuse, and will do anything to protect clint. he’s come in clutch in many situations where clint is in danger, acting as an attack dog for him.

• don’t let the above fool you, though. when he is comfortable around someone he is an absolute fuzzy ball of sunshine. he is always there for clint when he needs emotional support, and will not hesitate to steal your human food and then pretend that nothing happened. even when clint can’t afford food for himself, he always makes sure lucky is well fed and cared for.

• before clint had the proper equipment installed in his house, clint relied on lucky for a few things when it came to his deafness, such as knowing when someone’s at the door, keeping an eye out of anything suspicious, and waking him up in the morning at a reasonable time.

• lucky understands american sign language just as well as he does english. simple dog commands etc. not like he actually listens to them, but whatever.
