She spent decades thinking she was just âditzy,â and the heartbreaking grief of finally learning the truth.
The Quiet Grief of the Life She Didn't Get to Live.
We laugh about the quirksâthe woman who reads the ending of a book first, buys the exact same bag of chips for thirty years, and eats half a pizza standing in a dark kitchen. But underneath those habits isn't just personality. Itâs a fortress built against a brain running too loud, too fast, and without a manual.
This essay explores:
The masks we wear: How undiagnosed neurodivergence and trauma get mislabeled as "ditzy" or "quirky."
Generational silence: The devastating toll of un-named mental health struggles passing down a family line.
Sensory fortresses: Why predictability becomes a matter of emotional survival.
Grieving the unlived life: What happens when you finally see the whole shape of what someone has been carrying.
Why petting your new puppy feels like an absolute, unforgivable betrayal.
Pet grief gives you absolute whiplash.
First, the world dismisses your pain by telling you âit was just a dogâ and expecting you to just get over it. But then, when the silence of your empty house actually becomes so violently loud that you get a new puppy just to survive it? Your own brain flips the script and calls you a traitor.
You find yourself sitting on the floor, petting a new dog, crying over a dead one, and actively hiding your old dogâs favorite squeaky raccoon from the new puppy because they haven't earned the raccoon yet.
You are not a monster. You are just trying to survive the quiet. And the people who told you "it was just a dog" have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.
I just dropped a new audio episode about the mind-bending guilt of the "rebound dog," attached directly to my essay on why those five wordsâit was just a dogâcause so much damage.

A scheduled reminder that if anyone ever tells you "it was just a dog," you do not owe them an explanation, a defense, or your time. You are allowed to protect your peace and walk away. The grief is massive because the love was massive. Listen to the audio if you need to hear someone say it out loud today.
A family can love someone deeply and still be too shocked to organise the words. Grief does not arrive with admin skills.

s it time?" sounds like an open question. It isn't.
If you are facing the end of a long life with a dog, or replaying the decision you made months ago, this essay is for you. A guide to reclaiming your timeline, understanding the physical reality of euthanasia, and giving yourself permission to pivot to comfort.
A real, seven-part framework for one of the hardest questions a dog owner ever has to ask themselves.
A migrant parentâs life cannot be reduced to âthey worked hard.â The eulogy has to look closer: what they crossed, what they carried, what they built, and what they never had time to explain. Read the full piece here:
The hardest part is not always writing the eulogy. Sometimes it is deciding what the room is ready to hear.

The question is not only how long a eulogy should be. It is what the eulogy has to hold: the truth, the room, the person, and the parts grief cannot summarise neatly. Read the full piece here:

They gave up one world to build another. A migrant parentâs eulogy has to carry more than work ethic. It has to carry leaving, rebuilding, silence, pride, loss and survival. Read the full piece here:

Bringing this back to your dashboard to remind you that you are absolutely allowed to hoard the sacred, half-chewed tennis balls. You are the guardian of the haunted real estate. Do not let the new puppy have the ghost toys until you are good and ready.

Some goodbyes need more truth than polish. The room can feel when a tribute has been cleaned until the person disappears.
