i do not want to live in the fucking panopticon fuck the camera that blinks above me at work, the tv watching me at the store, the "smile you're on camera" signs, the ring cameras, the flock cameras, the apps to track your child or partner, the activist friends telling me "just assume everything you do in public is being recorded somewhere", the government building protester databases, the teslas recording every move all around them, the knowledge that everything i type or search or save is being tracked and logged, the ads and search suggestions that mysteriously know what i was just talking about, the way biometrics keep creeping into more places, the way my car spies on me, the way my phone spies on me, the way there is nowhere to go to get away from it!!! no wonder the internet is full of vindictive little stalkers and witchhunts when it's the water and the air of society from the culture to the infrastructure

i think the most upsetting thing about american-flavor puritanism is how fucking patronizing it is. it's 2026 but the whole world still has to deal with a cultural hegemony grown from the gnarled vestiges of victorian-era paternalism. tax-paying adults with passports and the right to vote are treated like wayward children because of the antiquated idea that authorities must protect the weak minds of the unwashed masses from depravity and corruption. the average american can send a fellow citizen to the chair, but they can't piss in a ditch without being declared an outlaw. american entertainment media is saturated with sex, but you can't talk about it online without getting your account suspended. it's such blatant censorship at a universal scale, but because sexual content is framed as inherently dangerous, this restriction on basic adult autonomy, this blanket denial of moral and intellectual adulthood, can be reframed as protection, an expression of care, a moral duty. my mom had Opinions about this growing up. We were allowed to watch "adult" things that were considered "adult" due to sex and swearing, but barred from things rated "adult" due to violence until were much older. My friends thought this was weird as fuck but my mom, when pressed about it, would always say, "Sex is part of the normal human experience for most people. Swearing is part of everyday life for most people. Virtually nobody you will ever meet regularly sees people decapitated and the people who do are really traumatized. I think I know what I'd rather expose my kids to." And a funny thing happens when you open dialogue on these things: kids self-regulate anyway. They expose themselves to adult topics at a pace they feel ready for and in a way that makes them feel safe. Even given this freedom, I didn't watch a sex scene with my eyes open until I was like 18 and didn't say so much as "damn" till I was in high school. Because I didn't feel ready for it. It made me feel icky. But I knew as soon as I WAS ready that I would have a safe and nonjudgmental place to ask questions and understand adult things at a level befitting... you know. An adult. Which is what I was becoming. Which is what all children become.

It really is condescending and kind of dystopian that I, an adult, am not allowed to discuss sex or curse on certain sites, especially since I have been allowed to do those things since I was actually a child.

#that’s a very interesting point that sex and cursing are things you encounter very often when you’re an adult but violence not so much #and it’s a good thing bc it really is traumatizing #i’ve never really thought about it but yeah it does feel insane that i can watch a movie where there’s blood and guts being shown #but seeing a naked body is what causes the panic #i am a 33 year old tax paying adult!!!
