How to Build at Farm at a Museum: WORKacâs P.F.1 at PS1
Before MoMA PS1â˛s courtyard held AndrĂŠs Jaqueâs COSMO, it played host to P.F.1 (Public Farm One) by WORKac. The New York-based firm won the prestigious Young Architects Program in 2008 with an urban farm concept that evokes the look of a flying carpet in the midst of landing. Constructed from large cardboard tubes, its top surface became a working farm, blooming with a variety of vegetables and plants. Acting as an interactive bridge between outside and inside, P.F.1 created multiple zones of activity, including swings, fans, sound effects, seating areas, and a pool at its center. At the end of the summer, its inexpensive components were broken down and fully recycled. Both AndrĂŠs Jaque/Office for Political Innovation and WORKac will be participating in the Chicago Architecture Biennial this October.Â

Aranda\Laschâs 20 Bridges for Central Park: Chicago Edition
20 Bridges for Central Park is a proposal by design studio Aranda\Lasch to extend the legacy of brick, stone and cast iron bridges of Central Park. Originally realized by Olmsted and Vaux, they were built to make connections between landscapes and intertwine the Parkâs footpaths, carriageways and bridle paths. Recognized as a radical invention in landscape design, they allowed the traffic of people and nature to flow over, under and through them. As an evolution of this concept, Aranda\Lasch developed a set of bridges built from a single fractal unit that follows a simple trajectory in space. Some are conventional footbridges, others are more unexpected such as stepping stones over a creek or a ladder up a hill. In celebration of Aranda\Laschâs participation in the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial this fall and the exciting new architectural visions to come, weâve reimagined one of these bridges spanning the Chicago River.Â
