The tragedy of Royai vs. The tragedy of Lingfan
So I think there’s probably been a lot said about the similarities between Ling’s relationship with Lan Fan and Roy’s relationship with Riza, but I want to talk about specifically what’s kind of tragic about each ship. I think one of the big differences between the two is their understanding of each other.
Note that these are my personal opinions. If you don’t think Riza is in love with Roy or same with Lan Fan toward Ling, this isn’t the off the cuff analysis for you.
With Roy and Riza, there’s an understanding between them off their relationship. At least from my perspective, it’s clear that they love each other. Riza and Roy have a very deep connection, they’re comfortable with each other, they frequently express how much they trust and respect each other. But while I think they’re both aware of how they feel, they also both understand that they can’t be together because of their positions. It’s kind of sad but at the same time, they both seem content in the way things are between them.
Ling and Lan Fan have a similar relationship, but they’re missing that mutual understanding. Lan Fan loves Ling, but I’m not necessarily sure Ling has romantic feelings for Lan Fan in return. He clearly cares very deeply for her, but it seems more out of a sense of obligation–remember that Ling believes a king has a duty to serve his people. Ling will put his life on the line to protect Lan Fan because he owes it to her, as her Lord, to treat her with as much respect and regard for her well being as she gives him. But that doesn’t mean he loves her.
So, in conclusion: Roy and Riza have a relationship that is mutual, unspoken, and understood; Ling and Lan Fan, while still caring deeply for each other, have one that is not mutual, and not spoken or understood.
