A lot of action movie fans and action movie writers have the exact same opinions about the action genre as its critics so not only am I often trying to convince action movie critics that the action genre has so much potential to be good I am also arguing with its fans and screenwriters.
Trying to do voice claims for characters when your characters are English will have you scrolling #nottingham on insta for 5+ hours just to find nothing usable.
About 15 minutes into Genevieve and I would also fall out with my boyfriend if he asked me to go to Brighton. Brighton haters unite across the decades.
Due to the whole living in London thing Iâm generally put off by like a majority of punk stuff in media out of a general sense of âwow, tourist stuffâ regardless of the fact that punk still exists and I know a few punks who are all nice people.
And I can accept and enter into the fantasy mostly when Iâm watching TV or whatever but GOD I am begging writers to use locations other than Camden because like, yes, historically the market was a big scene. But itâs owned by an Israeli billionaire now. And the expectations people who donât live around have of Camden market because of the preceding reputation are always sort of depressing to have to burst when I take them on a canal walk with me.
There are so many other locations I promise you. You can remain accurate to the time while still not making the fantasy alienating to the current generation.

just saw someone say "a fandom is small, so like only 1-3 fics posted per day" . you wouldnt survive a day in the place where im from
I love when quizzes have that question thatâs like âWhat fictional universe do you most want to live inâ because theyâre all like. Maze Runner. Star Wars. Any other objectively awful situation one could find themselves in. Like wow the real world isnât even hugely a great place but that would dramatically worsen things.

Anyway hereâs the comic
Hygrade (the company that owns Ethan) has a parent company with investments in London, and when they realise that they canât permanently recapture him or get him deported, they threaten the locals instead.
(Subtle Thames Water slander go)
I feel like every time I envision a new comic for my main project it gets further from being a comedy I canât lie.
I AM FED UP OF LIVING SOMEWHERE EVERYTHING IS CONTROLLED BY FACELESS COMPANIES WE DONâT FIND OUT ABOUT UNTIL THEY CAUSE A CRISIS. Horizon, Macquarie, Arconic, now itâs fucking Palantir and the NHS. Canât wait to see what new scandal theyâll drop us in.
When I started this project I was mostly just thinking about dirty money in London, but then more shit kept happening. Camden Market is owned by an Israeli billionaire. They want to make Brick Lane a datacentre. Thereâs been an ongoing campaign for years to remove one of the singular affordable hangout locations near me and replace it with luxury flats that will seriously damage the local ecosystem under the excuse that the location (a drive in pool, fast food place, bowling alley, cinema, etc) is âtoo car-centredâ despite being literally on a motorway. Like my friend get rid of the motorway first. A local shop near me has a GoFundMe up because a company took advantage of their lease running out and shut them out of being able to even be part of the selling process, and now rentâs becoming impossible. Thereâs something like 3x as many empty homes in London as homeless people. And this isnât unique to London but with the financial capital so close it feels like the cityâs at war with itself.
Feel like Iâve ranted so much now that itâs in poor taste to tack on the comic at the end of the post so thatâs going to be a separate thing but fuck man itâs just shit isnât it.

Because Ned and Lydia are both students (sorta) who want to work in the media industries I figured naturally theyâd both use Letterboxd so I had fun figuring out their top 4s.
Ned is a film bro and annoying about it. His favourite practitioners are Danny Boyle, Baz Luhrmann and Louis Theroux. Also partial to Wes Anderson and Rob Reiner. Heâs also a fan of classic films but his first love was 90s-00s cinema.
Almost making the list for his top 4 were The Matrix, Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz or Whiplash. Nedâs kind of miserable in life and doesnât see a lot of meaning in his situation and is waiting for something to slap him out of it. He likes films with spectacle.
The other DVD heâs holding is When Harry Met Sally because I think he really enjoys romance films as long as theyâre âcritically acclaimedâ and not chick flicks eg Groundhog Day, Jerry Maguire. Because heâs a film bro and a loser.
Lydia was a lot more straightforward because I could just look at my friendsâ profiles, although I wonât pretend Iâm confident about superhero films. I think she prefers stories about fantastical events because she doesnât think realism is often captured by narrative fiction film and would rather see something she couldnât just hear from somebody in real life.
Also had to put Superman II on there because watching that last summer definitely gave me ideas for the project. And because thereâs a nutcase journalist who I think Lydia would identify with. The film sheâs holding is the Lego Batman movie.
I added Ethan in even though he has seen maybe 3 films in his whole life and doesnât have access to the internet so he canât even use Letterboxd because I didnât want to leave him out.
Ethanâs first real exposure to the medium of film and tv has probably been British daytime tv if you donât count the propaganda training videos he watched at Hygrade. His favourite genre is probably renovation/property/architecture tv because he didnât really get a look into âdomestic lifeâ. Heâs seen every single episode of George Clarkeâs Amazing Spaces.
Generally, the idea of being a normal person is escapism for him, so he prefers low-stakes nonfiction reality tv. Although there are perhaps some drawbacks to trying to learn how to be human by watching EastEnders.
Too Much feels like a really interesting answer to the weird depiction of English people in nineties/naughties rom-coms because the general criticism by English people to those films is usually âThat is an unrealistic depiction of the average English person, there should be more rom-coms about the working classâ (which is a totally fair point).
But Too Much takes almost the opposite route. Instead of a nice, romantic man who is working class, they instead show what it would REALLY be like to date the people who sound and move in the world like Hugh Grant. They show some of the more bleak aspects of Britainâs modern upper class, and how absolutely unappealing the whole thing is and I LOVED it.
The depiction of Felixâs family (+ the neglect and child abuse) is really interesting. The wedding/party where everyone is performatively progressive but itâs all either to advertise their own work or to maintain politeness while inviting a known rapist to the event is painfully accurate to the types of people Iâve met trying to break into the creative industries. The mentions of racism + general implications in a lot of Felixâs descriptions of his backstory are pretty good as far as someone without that experience can say.
Choosing to double down on the charming posh man type love interest and strip back all of the niceties you get on tv is a genius idea for an American TV show about the U.K. thatâs supposed to represent the idea of expectations versus reality.
im no longer warning people about the sixties sfx in tos instead grabbing them by the shoulders and screaming there are aliens made of bubble wrap and latex and so much glitter. most of the episodes are blatantly filmed in southern california or three rotating sets featuring either pink orange or blue rocks. people jump off walls and pirouette when they get "punched". the ship beeps. a lot. too much for realism. spock goes into heat. dont worry about it. the point is there is no BUT. im not going to say "its very silly but its fun" ENOUGH! it's silly AND it's fun!!!!you will learn to love it all because when was the last time you looked at bubble wrap and a back garden and saw another world? remember how much fun it was? do you want to try again?!?!! do you want to play!!!!

The internet has been fairly normal to me all things considered because my main interactions online are drawing feedback or laughing at serial telly/the weather together but the type of interactions I was having daily in secondary school included a close personal friend telling me she imagines the lovechild of her favourite fictional characters would be exactly like me and getting offered LSD by another friendâs evil ex every day.
Ethan experiences U.K. weather part 1 (the heat⌠godâŚ)
Based quite unfortunately on a real conversation I had when I was like 9 and condescendingly asked an American from the rainiest city in the USA if English weather was an adjustment. Humbled so bad I made it into a skit almost 10 years later.
Iâm microdosing learning how to draw backgrounds by overcomplicating silly little two panel interactions like this it seems.
