Souma and Rinne are a Crack ship in the truest sense considering they have little to no established dynamic or interactions. I feel like I have to do some ground work for how I imagine their relationship could hypothetically come to be in order to answer any questions about them.

Rinne is always searching for fun, and he often finds it by getting under other people's skin. Souma is particularly susceptible to teasing considering he's a silly dork and quite gullible. That's their point of connection. Rinne is bored, Souma makes the mistake of entering his peripheral vision, and promptly pays the price.

But Souma's reaction to teasing is more volatile than Rinne expected. Souma interprets playful insults like an attack on his honor, and threatens to silence Rinne by force if he continues. Unfortunately, Rinne finds that reaction entertaining. His interest in Souma goes from passing to targetted... to the point of bullying. He likes winding Souma up. No one else gives him the same rush. He wonders how far he would have to push Souma to make him snap?

Eventually, he finds out. When Souma is struggles in a social situation, he falls back on threatening people with his sword to make himself heard. He is trying to unlearn this habit and communicate in healthier ways, but Rinne is actively trying to regress him. To get him to give in to his anger.

Inevitably, Souma draws his sword in an attempt to make Rinne shut up. But Rinne isn't intimidated. To Souma's surprise, Rinne's unhinged smirk peaks. He says "About damn time!" And draws a melee weapon of his own.

Souma is suspicious and uncertain.

Rinne eggs him on, "Come on. You're pissed at me, right? Don't you wanna let out some of that anger? Spar with me."

Souma fails to refuse that tempting offer. He attacks, and the pair of 'idols' devolve into a ruthless clash of blades. Souma is surprised by Rinne's aptitude. Souma is clearly the more practiced and disciplined fighter, but Rinne spars with the confidence of someone who was also combat trained from childhood, and his fighting style has a touch of madness that keeps Souma on his toes in a way no other opponent ever has.

They both enjoy the violent outlet for their emotions, and the match ends with them sweaty and short of breath. Souma is smiling — but then he realizes what he just did. Keito would be very upset if he found out Souma attacked another idol. Keito wants to wean Souma off his sword entirely to fit him into society's mold, but here he is sparring with a man who once dragged Akatsuki's honor through the mud? It was easy for Rinne to get under Souma's skin. All it takes to fire him up is a condescending nickname. In BB, Rinne uses "baby samurai" @ Souma but i was never wholly satisfied with that tbh. I wanted BB Rinne's nickname for Souma to sting a bit more, but now canon Rinne is calling Souma "samurai-chan" so who knows maybe I'm a fucking honorific hating oracle.

After a particularly upsetting day of idol work, Souma draws blood on Rinne during a heated sparring session. He's horrified to hurt the person he's grown to admire as a lord, but Rinne reassures him that it's fine. He'd never admit it, but he believes he deserves the pain. Souma insists on bandaging the wound himself, and Rinne gets an honest to god doki-doki when Soums patches him up so gently and fondly. No one has ever shown him physical care like that before.
