My frigid cold takes on the Izumi's VA situation
Disclaimer, I don't care about this man. He and Izumi are two entirely divorced entities in my mind. If Izumi does end up recast then it is what it is. I just hate hivemind reactionary discourse.
Adultery is a deeply personal issue that really isn't the business of anyone other than the couple involved - but when a celebrity is the one who does the cheating, it suddenly becomes everyone's business. When a celebrity cheats, the entire world feels justified in giving their two cents about a relationship involving people they know nothing about. Ofc cheating is morally wrong, but it is quite literally not my business who the guy who voices one of my favorite anime boys fucks in his spare time. Nothing about his personal life is my business, because I have a healthy understanding of the boundaries between fame and fans. It's not a crime to cheat on your partner, it's just a really dick move.
My point is that you have to ask what's even being gained by airing this dirty laundry. From what I understand, it was a consensual and legal affair between adults. The wife already knew about it, and she'd already forgiven him for it. The only victim here is the wife who was cheated on. But does she gain anything from this publicity? Does she gain anything from this fandom waging a new discourse crusade? Considering in the released statements she said that she and her husband reconciled years ago, I'd imagine no? The only thing that's being accomplished here is dragging what's likely a point of deep shame for the wife into the spotlight so people can condemn the husband she already forgave on her behalf.
No good is coming from this scandal, everyone spreading it is presumably just causing the woman pain for something she'd hopefully already begun healing from. The only incentive here is online engagement for whoever leaked the story, and I won't be feeding that beast beyond this post.
The only person with a right to judge the dude's actions was his wife, and for whatever reason, she chose to stay with him. Her reasons also aren't our business. Their entire relationship is none of our business. If this world could be normal about celebrities, that would be a widely held belief.
There's like. Nothing more to say, I just don't think this is something the public should be compelled to weigh in on.
so I'm hoping we can just.......... move on :)
