Danielle wasn’t one to get over things quickly and she wouldn’t forget this either. “But Daddy it does matter because you matter,” she replied reaching for his hand. “Let me make it up to you. Nothing crazy but something to show how much I appreciate you. Let me do at least that?”

“Okay. We can do that if that’s what you want.”

In the past few months Sloane had seen an amazing change in Forrest but wasn’t surprised that guys she had known for years still acted like animals. “Jake, next time how about you think about being an asshole to my friends and wonder why I won’t go out with you.” She scoffed shoving past him in order to help Forrest with his books. “Hey you,” she chirped as she picked up his math book and handing it over to him. “Seems like you’ve been too busy with your cool new friends to hang out with me lately. There’s a basketball game tonight you should come and we can get pizza or something afterwards? Unless you already have plans or something.”

Forrest gave her a small smile as she greeted him and began to help. He stood up straight and held his books in his hands as she placed them there. His cheeks flushed at her words after and shook his head. “My mom’s just really strict about when I get to hang out. Have to catch her in a good mood.” He explains, blinking  abit as some hair gets in his eye, “No plans so I can come if you want to.”

“Really? Uh, yeah that would be kinda nice. I’m almost out of the prescription stuff.”

“Aloe Vera helps with burns and I have plenty of that in gel form.”

   there’s a quick squeal of gratitude that passes through her lips as she lifts herself on the tips of her toes to wrap her arms around his shoulders; holding in a thankful embrace before stepping away. ‘ he’ll be here in a day or two.thank you for doing this for me, forrest. i really do appreciate it. ’

He tenses up at first but it’s only for a second before he’s lightly hugging her back. It’s a habit that he hasn’t shaken even after all these years of being away from those who had hurt him most. Some part of him would always flinch away in fear that it might be a strike rather than affection. “It’s not like I have anything else better to do anyways.”

“I just… got defensive. They’re ugly, and it hurts… I’m sorry.”

“I have stuff for burns if you need it.”

   ‘ don’t think i’m asking you because of the things you have, that’s not it at all. ’ she’s quick to clarify once he’s done speaking. ‘ you’re really the only one i trust to meet him as a boyfriend type figure. i don’t care about that stuff & neither does he..— it would mean a great deal to me if you did. but if you don’t want to that’s okay too, don’t feel forced or anything. ’

Forrest thought over the options in his head before finally giving in and nodding. “When is he coming?” He never had a father figure of his own that he could speak of so he wasn’t even sure what to expect. He wasn’t exactly one most wanted to meet their family, let alone their parents.

“I am serious! I mean, the fat part was a joke but, really… I just used too much oil in the fryer.”

“Why’d you hide it from me when I asked?”

   ‘ i’m just asking for a big favor here, it has nothing to do with how i think of you. can’t say i honestly know anyone who would do something so out of the box without getting something in return…— i just kinda need you to pretend to be my boyfriend for a few days. just until my dad goes back home then i’ll set you free. ’

“If you’re doing this to impress your dad, I’m not sure that I’m the best choice as a fake boyfriend. I mean sure I have the nice big house and the fast expensive cars, but uh-” He doesn’t know how to say it honestly, “But I mean I can do it if you really want me to.”
