To: Kochiya Sanae From: Kanbaru Suruga
[1] – Who are these vandals? I will send them flying.
Such fighting words. She narrowly manages to strap on her shoes before leaving the house and sending out the next set of messages.
[2] – don’t move unless it’s somewhere safe of course [3] – I’ll be right there
TO: Kanbaru Suruga FROM: Kochiya Sanae
[1/3] random people idk [2/3] no it’s okay i’ll be fine! [3/3] but if you do i’m still at the shrine, trying to clean up...
She was bad at saying no.
To: Kochiya Sanae From: Kanbaru Suruga
[1] – I came home early because it’s a mess out there [2] – if you need me to help you out, tell me. [3] – Please be safe out there.
And send. For now, she wonders if the book she has dog-eared at the edge of the couch would distract her enough to keep her worries at bay. Even if she trusts that Sanae can handle herself out there, Suruga can’t help but be burdened by concern.

TO: Kanbaru Suruga FROM: Kochiya Sanae
{1/4} Vandals tore down what was left of my shrine... {2/4} I’m okay but I twisted my ankle on some rubble. {3/4} But don’t worry I’m... totally okay! {4/4} I’m not crying!
What a very bad lie that was.
🌀 —- “Oh, no, it’s fine... I’ve only been working on rebuilding this shrine for the past two months... It’s totally fine that protestors levelled it. Totally fine...” Or so she said, but she looked ready to cry.
Twinkle twinkle little star, what a miracle you are~ ☆ I draw too much Sanae but I’m never stopping!!

★ █ SHE WOULD BE PERHAPS the last person to ever judge anyone for stealing – though, of course, she might have gone on to make fun of Sanae for taking over an abandoned shrine like some kind of squatter anyway, given the chance. Might have.
She’s more than a little starstricken by Sanae’s other admission, an open-mouthed surprise on her face. Not so much that she’s actually dating someone, but that Marisa feels like she’s the last person to find out, somehow. Oh, how she hates not knowing things first –
<<Well, uh, yeah! I mean – >> But gods, she’s at a loss for words; nothing’s bothering her from learning this but she feels like she’s been thrown off balance. Of course, the magician steadies herself mentally at the mention of visiting.
There’s no one else left for her to leech well-made tea from with no extra cost now.
<<Of course I wanna come over and visit. I mean, I guess I should be payin’ some sorta respect to your new shrine along the way or somethin’ too but – >> A visit to their house: Marisa hopes this Suruga has some good reading material on hand for her to borrow. <<Yeah, sign me up! Whenever ya want me to come over, I’m free. Like all the time, now.>>
🌀 —- It was fortunate for Marisa in the long run that she was the first person from Gensokyo that Sanae had actually told. So many faces from their home world used to remain in this city, and yet so many had seemingly left without a word. Even Sakuya, whom she knew was around, was scarcely heard from these days. If Sanae had said she wasn’t lonely, she’d be lying.
Then again, even in Gensokyo...
She was usually lonely.
“You can pay respect right now! Just 100 yen for one of these protection charms!” As if from nowhere, a paper charm was being waved around in her hand. She didn’t have an actual job, so relying on donations was about the best she could do.
And based on how beat up her clothes were, the best she could do wasn’t great.
“Say... If you’re free all the time, could you stay with me a while, Kirisame-san? What if we get dinner or go to a show or something!? Or, uh... I don’t have a lot of money, so we could go play at the park...”

Taken aback by the sudden apology, Suruga tilted her head, her gaze fallen into mild concern. But such concern lasted only a moment; she was just as quick to laugh it off and wave her hands in dismissal.
“No, no! It’s absolutely fine!” With a wide grin, she gave this reassurance. But just before she could even expound on that, attempting further to make Sanae feel less awful about the whole thing, the last words she expected to leave Sanae’s lips had, well… left them.

🌀 —- This whole situation was quickly escalating. As Suruga approached, even Sanae couldn’t help but blush a brilliant crimson. They’d been together for months now, and yet physically their relationship had barely escalated at all. And yet this was happening, for some reason, in her own home world.
Was she simply comfortable here? Regardless of her sudden boldness in a moment of necessity, it was clear that this whole exchange was still...
Extremely awkward.
“Is that so? I suppose I should have started with that a long time ago, but whenever my mom was home she would always offer her assistance on the matter.” Mahiru shyly brushed her fingers through her bangs, suddenly very aware of the visible trails of her laziness.
“I mean- I could totally do it on my own. Of course, I´m not incompetent or anything… Don´t look at me like that! It´s just because I´m not used to do it on my own, so I thought you maybe could help me out.”
🌀 —- “Huh? I wasn’t saying you’re incompetent! I was just curious since I’ve never had to dye my own hair. My friends in high school always seemed to do it themselves.” ‘Friends’ was a term being used loosely here. She didn’t have much in terms of ‘friends’ in the outside world.
“I guess what they say about tsundere girls being cute is true after all, though! I’ll help you, don’t worry. My name is Sanae Kochiya, what about you?”
barely if at all -- [event part 1]
Suruga flinched a little on contact. When she understood that the other wasn’t hurting her, she relaxed. Eventually she came to return the embrace, shifting her body and wrapping her arms around the other.
“The past…” Soon she pulled away, shifting her position to sit comfortably. She hadn’t the slightest understanding of where this other person was coming from, but the fact that this was the past was something she couldn’t accept; it was all too confusing to the child. There must be some kind of explanation for all this, right? She lifted the back of her hand to wipe the tears from her face. “You keep talking about knowing me as if you were some kind of future person and now you’re saying that you’re glad this past happened this way. I really don’t get it.”
Her expression fell even more, along with her gaze. “But you think I can be liked, at least in the future…” Those words burned as they left her lips. It was hard for her to fathom at that moment that she was worthy of anyone’s admiration, whether it was now or at any point in the future. But here she was, in the present, or rather the past, on the receiving end of all this kindness. She didn’t know what to do with it, what to do with herself. There was no way she could accept any of this.
That kindness stung her so much she clenched her fists, her tiny frame shaking.
“No. This, this is just a dream. This is a dream, I’m supposed to be asleep, okay? Yes, I’m sleeping. There’s no way someone from the future could possibly tell me these things! That stuff only exists in books, you know. So when, so when I wake up, nothing will have happened. I’ll just go to school tomorrow and… and…”
She shook her head and lifted her gaze to meet that girl’s once again. For this being just a dream, the pain was quite real – at least, she could feel a weight sitting atop her chest.
“Those things you said about me. No one else will see that. No one else wants to understand me. This is just a dream, and no one else even wants anything to do with me.” No one else. That rang in her mind. She let out a laugh, one mixed in with a huff, and she turned her head toward the ground.
The words still rattled in her head. “No one else–” So much that she mumbled them again. But no sooner did she do that than she came to understand.
A gasp and widened eyes later, and she quickly drew her hands to cover her mouth.
–but you.
In muffled tones, she spoke. “A-Ahh, s-sorry, stranger-san…”
🌀 —- One’s childhood was often wrought with insecurities. Growing up wasn’t easy. Your body changed, your interests changed; though in Kanbaru’s case it seemed puberty was accompanied by an arm that wanted to punch trees. Some would grow as people from their childhoods, but some would never grow as people at all. Each human was different in that way, and that was part of the reason Sanae loved people.
The tiny Sanae continued to hold Kanbaru without any intention of abandoning her grasp. Perhaps the gap in knowledge between the two was too great. The girl trapped in the past, and the girl from the present. There was a disconnect that the shrine maiden couldn’t figure out how to click back together. It would obviously come with Suruga realizing that there was something off, but no clear sign of that seemed to exist.
“At the end of the day, does it matter if anyone but me sees it? I mean, don’t worry! There are lots of people that see it in the future. You’re a good person after all. But to this you, Suruga Kanbaru, do you really need the reassurance of multiple people? Even if I’m stuck looking like a kid, I’ll make sure everyone else sees it no matter what. ‘Cause that’s what a friend would do. What a girlfriend would do.”
Pausing, she leaned down and planted an innocent kiss upon Suruga’s lips a moment. She could taste tears, be they recent or current, but that only made her hold the other child more.
“I’m here. Even if no one else is.”
It’s not as though Hitagi didn’t appreciate the concern so much as it never reached her. Or, it did, but she was a bulldozer of a woman–the things in front of her certainly weren’t invisible to her, but her only concern was crushing everything under her feet. She was a storm. She was cut breaks.
She finally shut up when the word god was uttered again.
God is a force above all else, after all.
Senjougahara shifted on her feet, head rolling to the side as she thought earnestly about this–about things. There was no reason to dwell on reasonings for Kanbaru’s actions; she had to trust her junior whether she wanted to or not. There was no reason to be spiteful; nothing here occurred that was malicious or neglectful. There was only one way to go about things from here on out.
She still seemed unsure as she spoke, but not in doubt of the girl before her. “Regardless…” She couldn’t help but pause again, setting to rest all the other said with a few carefully chosen words. “All I ask is that you treat her, and I, well. Sanae-san.”
“…Please forgive me, I do not have the most pleasant history with gods.”
That will explain it, obviously.
🌀 —- She knew full well that the title of ‘god’ was something that could be considered a ‘loaded weapon’ before the right audience. There were those that worshiped them unbridled by personal opinion. There were those that loathed gods with a passion as well. And, between the two extremes, were those that would doubt the existence of higher powers. Sanae, in her lifetime, had been victim to all three. For while the Gods could be good to the people, the people weren’t always good when faced with a God.
Humans were selfish, after all.
Then again, did any such existence dwell on Earth that wasn’t at least somewhat selfish?
“Of course I’ll treat her well. I’m just as much a human as I am a God, y’know.” Well, probably a little more human. One day, she might ascend into full god status. But for now, she was content being who she was.
She took a step forward, gazing into Hitagi’s eyes a moment. She could only wonder what sort of history she’d had with gods. Kanbaru, too, had been battling something supernatural at one point in her life. Was that sort of even common in the outside world now? “Not all Gods are benevolent, even I know that. Just like there are good youkai, there can be bad gods. I just hope they haven’t completely ruined your impression of them, Senjougahara-senpai.”

≧ Koizumi Mahiru cursed herself for not taking care of her haircut earlier. Look at the mess she was in now, having to deal with almost seven, perhaps eight cm of dark hair taking over her scalp. The red was her signature look, and she wasn´t quite ready to just give it up.
“This might come off as a strange request, but.. You wouldn´t possible know how to dye someones hair? Ah, I suppose you would have to bleach it too - but it´s just the roots; I swear!”
🌀 —- “...? Don’t most girls that keep their hair dyed see to it themselves?” Not that the shrine maiden could talk with her natural, green hair, but you know. That wasn’t quite true either. It had been black once, but she’d had a rather spiritual dyeing session that had left green as a natural colour.
“I know the basic procedure if you’d like, though! Dying hair is all science in the end! Besides, I helped a friend once!”

Whatever she said just then, Suruga was as quick to disregard, what with all the different things she could distract herself looking at in Sanae’s room. Varying books and clothes strewn about, aside from its physical location and the implications of being in this world, it wasn’t that much different from any other room she’d been in.
On hearing Sanae’s answer regarding where she could run, and the inevitable warning, she scratched her chin and then nodded. “I see, I see.” Right. That made sense given all the different kinds of beings that existed here. She wasn’t in her own world anymore, so it was natural to see that the rules here were different.

🌀 —- To think that such circumstances would have come from an offering of clothes. Well, to be fair, anyone a little more aware of their words might have caught the implications Suruga had before she’d stated them, but Sanae was thinking practically. It would be impractical for someone from the outside to parade around as if they were such, and it was fortunate that Suruga was also Japanese for that reason. A foreigner in Gensokyo would have undoubtedly caught unwanted attention.
Even as her significant other had broken into a silent blush, the Shrine Maiden hadn’t the foggiest idea as to why. Perhaps if it had been the opposite she would have held a similar impression, but that wasn’t the case at all.
