I got inspired by a fanfic I read.

In episode 8 when the mother arrives in Piltover she tells Mel that her brother is dead and in the previous episode Jinx and Ekko got into a fight. The episode ends with Jinx who is unconscious and we don't even know if Ekko is still alive at that time.

So here is my theory Mel's mother seems to be a woman who wants to control everything so she would have sent her daughter Mel to Piltover to make her clan known and become a great power. When she would have learned that Piltover was divided into 2 cities, she would have decided to send her son, therefore potentially Ekko, so that he could become a power of Zaun. What he did.
