The aquatic critter of the day is the

White Spotted Jellyfish

They are filter feeders and primarily eat zooplankton. Their life cycle consists of two stages: the polyp stage and the medusa stage.

They have a very unique way of reproducing that involves both sexual and asexual reproduction. After the male jellyfish fertilizes the eggs, the female jellyfish releases polyps onto the ocean floor where these polyps begin to clone themselves repeatedly for like three years before moving on to the medusa stage. Pretty neat!

The aquatic critter of the day is the Psudoliparis Snailfish!

This guy can live at depths up to 27,000 feet below the surface! At this depth, the pressure is greater than 800x that of the pressure experienced on the surface, making it the record holder for "deepest-dwelling fish"!

The exact species of psudoliparis is not yet known, but it recently beat out its cousin the "Mariana Snailfish" which lives in the Mariana Trench. This new record holder is found in the Izu-Ogasawara Trench.

Clavelina ossipandae, the skeleton panda sea tunicate is a species of colonial ascidian, also known as sea tunicates, a group of sessile, marine filter-feeding invertebrates. Just some funky little guys!

First discovered near Kume Island in Japan by local divers, pictures of the animal attracted media attention in 2017. But they weren't given their formal taxonomic description until 2024

The aquatic critter of the day is the Chain Catshark, a small biolfluorescent species of catshark! Chain catsharks absorb blue light and biochemically emit green light from themselves. They live in the cold water of the Gulf of Mexico and are usually nocturnal.

The aquatic critter of the day is the Giant Tube Worm! They are a chemoautotrophic keystone species that lives near hydrothermal vents and feeds off of the chemicals emitted from them. They are a large food source in vent ecosystems and often support the majority of the food chain in these areas! What neat little critters :)

The aquatic critter of the day is the Yellow Tube Sponge, a species of the order Verongiida! These sponges can reproduce both sexually and asexually. They are made of spongin rather than spicules, making them more flexible and spongier. Spongebob was confirmed to be a yellow tube sponge in The Spongebob Musical!

The aquatic critter of the day is the Fangtooth Fish, a genus of ray-finned fish! The fangtooth has the largest teeth proportional to its body of any fish! It's teeth are so large that it can't close its mouth. Despite their fearsome teeth, they are primarily filter feeders. Their aquatic name means "Unarmed stomach!"

The critter of the day is the Seahorse, a genus of bony fish! They swim poorly because their fins are very small compared to other fish or completely absent in the case of their caudal fins. Because or this, they are the slowest fish in the world. Also, the males get pregnant instead of the females! Their binomial name means "Horse-like sea creature"
