Ok u know that like. Period drama shirt. The white shirt men are always wearing in period dramas. The Colin Firth jumps into a lake shirt. Are you visualising this in your mind? Ok now imagine: a butch wearing the shirt. And she has tasteful cleavage. Do you see my vision.
I said what I said 💀
If I had a nickel for every time Hamish Linklater tried to save a struggling New England island town only to bring death and destruction, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

I’m officially in the query trenches with my 90,000 word adult queer horror novel!
During lockdown in 2020, a writer friend and I challenged ourselves to write a novella in three months and I jumped at the chance to finally put an idea I had since 2016 onto the page. We met weekly to review each other's pages and provided great feedback. While he finished his novella, I began to realize the story I wanted to tell was outgrowing the goal I'd set for myself. So, instead of pushing through and trying to make this story something it wasn't, I put it down and focused my efforts on other writing projects. Flash forward to September 2024 when I was laid off from my job. This market has been incredibly difficult to navigate, as anyone out of work will tell you. I needed something to help keep me structured while I searched, and I found myself thinking about the story I shelved four years ago. Was I wrong? Could it be contained to a novella? Or should I follow my gut and expand the story? By May 2025 I finished my first draft of a novel. By October I'd done two revisions and sent it off to beta readers. Which brings us to January 2026. I joined a querying workshop run by literary agent Eric Smith to ensure my query packet was in the best place it could be to start this process. I met other wonderful authors hoping to achieve the same thing. Currently I am seeking representation for my adult historical folk-horror novel. It's about 90,000 words so I was definitely right to listen to my gut. It's kind of a terrifying process. Putting something you've created out into the world always is. I think it's worth it though.

Peeking Over The Edge of the Query Trenches
My query journey is just about ready to begin. My Cabin in VT WIP is written, edited, and by tomorrow I'll have all my beta feedback to tighten things up. So, what comes next?
The Long List of Books I Read in 2025
I have to be honest, 2025 sucked. In fact, it's up there with one of the worst years of my life: I lost my job at the end of 2024 and was unable to find any work, medical issues just kept on coming, genocide and propaganda, & of course the US continuing its rapid decent into fascism.
So, I read a lot. 60 books to be exact when my goal for the year was only 20. I read some fun books, I read some important books. I read books I really loved, and books I could have gone without. I read for leisure, and I read for comps. No matter the reason, I'm just happy to be reading.
Moving into 2026 my reading goal for the year will likely be 25 books. Like I said last year, even though I've been able to far exceed the number of books I read with each passing year, I still think it's far more productive for me to slowly increase my goal year by year so as not to frustrate myself if I fall short.
Currently I'm reading Klaus: The Art of the Movie by Ramin Zahed, When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain by Nghi Vo, Tomb Raider Vol. 2 by Dan Jurgens, Adulthood Rites by Octavia E. Butler, and Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I know, it's a lot all at once, but I'm just really excited for the books I have planned to read this year.
So, without further ado! Here are the books I read each month in 2025. Happy New Year and happy reading!

Wild to look back at the Hunger Games trilogy now and know that at any given moment there's like a 70% chance that Haymitch is reciting "The Raven" in his head.
It’s official! My vacation horror collection had a release date. May 2027 can’t come soon enough 💀
a writing competition i was going to participate in again this year has announced that they now allow AI generated content to be submitted
their reasoning being that "we couldn't ban it even if we wanted to, every writer already uses it anyway"
"Every writer"?
come on
Reblog if you're a writer who doesn't use AI.
dear bookbird, do you have any recommendations for audiobooks, specifically? looking for something with a really good narrator.

A greeting for negligent penpals and procrastinating authors. Postcard from my collection, 1911.
I was only going to make this a 50 book list, but I like a lot of books lol. So, here's 75 books I've enjoyed.
Shock, shock, my first challenge is about books. How many have you read?
