I watched episode nine of TADC last night, and I thought it was good. It wasn’t a perfect finale, but I still enjoyed it. Here are some notes:
• I liked all of Jax’s flashbacks. The reason Jax suppresses his emotions is because he told Ribbit about his past, and how he pushed his mom when they argued and she hugged him afterwards. That scene was really deep, and then Kaufmo knocked on the door, and Jax felt embarrassed and told Ribbit not to tell anyone about what he told her. This leads to Jax & Ribbit growing distant because Jax is always acting like he forgot that he told Ribbit about his past. Eventually, they get into an argument too and she abstracts, which causes Jax to feel guilty, but he still wants to hide that from the gang. Ragatha offers to help him, but he doesn’t want it, and makes her promise him that she won’t tell anyone about Ribbit. And when he finally abstracts, Ragatha cries to Pomni that she may have broken the promise.
• The scene where Pomni is helping Kinger rebuild the circus was so cute. He tells her not to focus too much on things, and she cries and admits that she’s scared. He then tells her that she is brave because she adapted so quickly while everyone else has been in the circus for years. The tears in these scenes felt genuine, and it was heartbreaking.
• I liked that Caine was given a second chance to set things right. It’s another example of the lesson that getting rid of technology and AI isn’t the answer, and that the people who program it and use it are the problem. He realizes that he did hurt the gang, and offers to let them do whatever they want. And then he shows them that they are still alive in the real world, and they have fulfilled all their dreams. So Gangle gets back into art, Kinger & Caine are friends again, Zooble opens another bar, and Pomni & Ragatha have fun together and have made up. Everyone gets a happy ending, but Jax is still abstracted, so he gets to be with other abstracted characters, like Ribbit & Kaufmo I assume.
• I loved that the ending paralleled the pilot with Pomni putting a genuine smile on her face rather than a nervous smile. And then it zooms out of the circus and into the void to show the new circus.
Now, there are some parts I did not like, but it’s small, nitpicky things:
• First, and most importantly, I really wanted a full scene of Jax abstracting. In the episode, it kinda just happened. It would’ve been sweet if he was abstracting in someone’s arms, maybe Pomni’s, and then he finally tells everyone about Ribbit and his past, and then before he abstracts, he sings “Daisy Bell” with Pomni one more time. Zooble is obviously annoyed at first, but it’s such a sad rendition that she can’t help but sing along and cry. I think it would’ve been a little more emotional that way.
• I needed more with Gangle & Zooble. There was this part where after Jax abstracted, Gangle tells Zooble that she can’t cry for Jax, and she feels guilty about that, but then it cuts to another scene. I would’ve loved to see Zooble assure Gangle that it would be okay or something like that. And then when the gang was putting Jax into the pillow fort, Gangle ran off crying and Zooble asked if she was having intrusive thoughts. She wiped away her tears, which was really adorable, but I thought Gangle would hug her or bury her head into Zooble’s chest or something like that. I dunno, I just wanted more scenes with them, but I’m glad they got a happy ending. And that they’re still alive
Other than that, I liked the finale. I will definitely miss this show a lot, and will be rewatching it again.
