A Pogeyman A Day

I DO WHATEVER I CAN IN WHATEVER MEDIUM I CAN ON WHATEVER KIND OF PAPER I FEEL LIKE BECAUSE GODDAMN I HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO DO THIS SOMEHOW AND I'M NOT ALWAYS GLUED TO MY TABLET!

Er-hem. Sorry about that. Basically, I'm giving myself license to draw traditionally as well as digitally. Because goddammit I have been slacking so badly, and shitty doodles are easier for me to do freehand.

#006, Blastoise

Here it is. My shitty Blastoise sketch. 

I took so freakin' long on it because I plan on making him and the Venusaur I did part of a set of three. When they're all completely finished, I'm going to print them out and sell them as posters at Toracon. 

But yeah... Blasty here needs a lot of work. A LOT. Which is why I kept putting off uploading him. I kept erasing and redrawing shit, and man... he still looks like crap/is unfinished. 

I know I haven't exactly been true to my goal, drawing a pokemon and day and whatnot...

BUT THAT'S GONNA CHANGE! YOU WAIT! I've set myself some new guidelines and everything! (now I just have to muster the courage to post my shitty-looking Blastoise sketch-thing and get on with the countdown)

But yeah, I've decided to give myself a time-limit; I can only take one hour drawing each Pokemon. One hour max. Color? Eh, I'll try my best to use it right off the bat. I'm a really line-heavy artist, so I think trying to draw with color as opposed to line will be a good exercise for me.

#005, Wartortle

Why is he dressed up like Vegeta? 

Because Dark, Peo, Moses, Ben, Rachel, Youko, Doba, and... er... I think I'm forgetting someone, but- OH SCREW IT, I'LL JUST SAY "THE SMYNJAS AND I"- the Smynjas and I went to see Team Four Star's Panel on Saturday. They debuted their latest episode of Hellsing Ultimate Abridged, which I totally LOVED, and... welp, I decided to finally check out their Dragon Ball Z Abridged Series. 

I've watched every episode today. EVERY. EPISODE. 

Vegeta and Piccolo are my favorites.

 So I drew a Vegeta wartortle.

Can't say what my reasoning was. Don't necessarily know if there WAS any reasoning. Maybe it's the fact that wartortles are blue and Vegeta wears blue...? Yeah, that could be it. And his spiky black hair is kinda like spiky blue wartortle ears - at least, they're kinda the same in terms of direction and shape...?

I did not have time for drawing.

It was a great trip! 9 hours of driving from here to Detroit, but totally worth it. Also gonna have to work my butt off to make up for lost time on art projects, but hey, that's okay too. I went on my first ever road trip to my second-ever con to meet all the loverly peoples at the Show Me Your News Forum in person... also for the first time! Sure, the scheduling was bloody awful, and we all had a hell of a time planning things out amongst the fifteen or twelve of us or so, but we managed! Also, the Marriot hotel where we were going to stay turned out to be a big pile of dicks, but IT DOESN'T MATTER. I saw Steam-Powered Giraffe's debut of Hatchworth and their new drummer, and I got to ask Doug Walker a question at the That Guy With The Glasses Panel on Sunday (by waving around a box of cheezits. Gimmicky, yes, and totally unrelated to my question, but I did ask him if he wanted one, just to be polite)

So in summation- yeah, it was kind of fucking awesome.

And that's why I wasn't able to draw any Pogeymans.

Still continuing the challenge though.

I'm actually kind of happy with this! Yeah, it's kinda rushed and unfinished-looking, but I ACTUALLY got that glowy-light effect to work the way I wanted, AND I think I'm on to a pretty awesome composition here!

My first Pokemon drawing is finished! Say hello to Bulbasaur, everyone.

The gradient is a bit cheesy, and yeah, the lines are very bold and stylized... but I don't think this is too bad a start. :3

What's up everyone?

My name is Cat, otherwise known as WhistleAndSnap, or waslikesstuff and wasmakesstuff. I've decided to undertake the challenge of digitally drawing a single Pokemon every day, starting with #001, Bulbasaur, and ending with #649, Genesect. 

Why am I doing this? Well... I want to get better at drawing. Especially at drawing digitally. It's not my forte. I'm more of a traditional artist.

But Cat! A Pokemon every day? How are you going to pull that off?!

By, er, drawing a single Pokemon every day.

Look, I'm not promising anything amazing here. I'm probably not even going to put in any fancy backgrounds or anything. This is more a test of my perseverance and ability to keep to a deadline. Plus, even though I'm an artist, I don't... *looks around guiltily* ... I don't actually draw every day.

Oh, I used to, when I was younger, but it's a habit I sort of fell out of when I discovered the internet. That, and I just started putting more focus into books, TV shows, and video games. Not to say there's anything wrong with those things! I love books, TV shows, and video games. They've enriched my life immensely and inspired me deeply as an artist and a human being. I just feel I'd be better off if I practiced my trade more. I'm going to be relying on my art to live one day, out there in the real world, so the more I can get myself to practice, the better!

You are definitely screwing yourself over, kid.

Hey, like I said, these drawings aren't going to be anything fancy. I'm a major in Illustration, so I'd like to think that means I have a certain amount of competency in this field but... well, not gonna lie here, these could come out looking kinda lousy from time to time.

For me, the key is simply getting the drawings DONE. Juggling them with the rest of my art projects and making time for myself to do them at all will be an achievement in and of itself. My time management skills are pretty nonexistent, something that'll bite me in the butt when I'm into my full-fledged career as an Illustrator. So anything to make those skills a little more substantial is always a plus.

So are these drawings of yours going to be full-color? 

Er... good question. Honestly, I dunno. I'd LIKE to aim for full color, but I acknowledge there are some days where all I'll be able to manage is a black and white sketch. I ain't superman, after all.

But yeah, full-color is something I'll be aiming for. If I can't do it, no big deal. It's just something to strive for.

You said you'll be drawing every Pokemon in order?

A-yup! Starting with Bulbasaur, and going up from there. I'm following the numbering system of the official National Pokedex. You can follow this link here to get a good view of the list. 

What if there are days when Tumblr is down? What are you going to do then?

Well, I've got a deviantart account that I'll be uploading this stuff to as well, so you can check that out if you like. You can also keep tabs on my progress in this thread on the Nuzlocke Forums. 

What if your tablet breaks? 

Then I'll be drawing my Pokemon for that day using a track pad or a mouse. I'll borrow a friend's tablet if I can, but if that's not possible, then I'll just have to do things the HARD way. *cracks knuckles*
