idk to me this screams mike was the narrator of stranger things all along, but he couldn’t tell the real story…the real story being of him in the closet…so the story didn’t include his pov. that’s why mike puts his binder next to will’s on the shelf in his basement, and why he looks at will’s particular binder for too long, teary-eyed. why will was the last person to leave mike’s basement, with mike framed in the background. why mike’s wearing a blue shirt. why he resembles his dad. why will’s painting is posted on the wall of mike’s college dorm. why mike seems generally..miserable.

edit: and oh! it’s why the story starts to get choppy halfway through the final chapter…because mike’s feelings begin boiling over.

crazy that they decided Nancy's independence arc needed her single but Jane's didn't. especially when Nancy's relationship with Jonathan never impacted her independence, but els relationship with Mike ALWAYS impacted hers

Without a doubt Jane had the worst ending (Copying this down from a comment I made)
Either her whole thing this season was that she had a miserable life and ended up suicidal then the solution is that she really DOES kill herself (literally a horrible character arc and a bad message)
OR she faked her death and moved on with her life with absolutely zero regard for the feelings of anyone who loves her.
Nevermind that she has a whole family now with a mom and a dad and two brothers.
Nevermind her "boyfriend"? who she supposedly loves who already has genuine trauma from her faking her death once before.
Nevermind her friends who were the first people to ever show her real kindness.
And especially Hopper! Like she's just gonna leave him? She'd do that knowing about what happened to Sara? And she knows first hand how much it hurt her when she thought HE was dead!
Actually that reminds me Joyce still has trauma from Will going missing in season 1! So Jane just totally retraumatized both of her parents by making them think they lost another child!

If nerdy teenagers and adults with about a million other things going on in their lives are able to make theoretical endings to your show that are better than the actual ending that you spent three years and billions of dollars working on I wouldn’t show my face in public again ngl
Just a reminder that the Duffers legitimately wrote that the day Mike found El in the woods was the day his life started. It wasn't just him saying what he thought he had to say. That speech in the pizza shop was meant to be genuinely heartfelt and honest.
It is now canon that he was serious about that, and Will being kidnapped was one of the best things to happen to him. He never would have met El in the first place if not for that.
And he said it right in front of Will.
This literally flies in the face of "it was the best thing I've ever done," but it's not like the Duffers remember any of that. If they did, they would've remembered Will's birthday or how old he was in season 1.

Another thing that really pisses me off about how they handled Rovickie was that there were so many opportunities to make Vickie Dunne relevant to the plot and they just didn't use it ???
Like vickie is a nurse/med student, and they could've USED THAT SM like the potential that has actually kills me
They could've had her help anyone injured in the finale during the battle with her medical knowledge. Maybe instead of the bullshit way Steve was saved we couldve had him actually get hurt and Vickie patch up his wounds and save him or any other character if the duffers were brave enough to let them get hurt
She could've also been introduced to the supernatural plot when karen and Ted got attacked ??? Like it's so clearly out of place in hawkins for injuries like that to just happen with no news of attackers plus news abt it would've spread round the town and hospital so Vickie absolutely would've heard about it.
We could've had vickie interacting with Nancy and Mike, maybe comforting Nancy because she's bound to at least know Nancy knows Robin if rovickie have been together since the 18 months. She could've even been the one to help sneak them into Karen's room and maybe help Robin and Will later on with their mission
Hell, vickie could've been MAX'S nurse, which would've helped tie her into the plot and main group and show her sympathising with lucas or letting him stay longer hours in the hospital with max to show she cares abt these people and not make then total strangers to her
just anythinggg to imply she has a personality would've been nice
It would've been nice to even just get a little graduation scene with her after med school with her and Robin or even just a clip of their enzos date in the epilogue would've been far nicer than the implied break up that Robin said in the epilogue

what is mike's narrative if not a horrible queer tragedy. the ending directly mirrors s1 with a sudden desperate mike/el kiss followed by el dying and mike mourning and holding onto hope that she's still out there somewhere, but. this time he finally gives up. he knows that even if she were still out there, whatever they had is over. el is the only girl he ever had the hope of loving. and that's twice now they've kissed only for that metaphorical hope to immediately die. and then mike wheeler puts away his childhood, which explicitly represents queer happiness and freedom, and closes the door behind him.
they held onto byler like it was a secret that needed to be kept under lock and key btw. if it wasn’t bait then why the fuck did you keep trying make the fandom second guess what was gonna happen with byler?
it could have been so easy to clarify “oh shit no mike and el are still together for sure. sorry for the confusion, no byler.” but they held onto it for the “shock factor” and to keep people on their toes but it just made everyone mad and it was the most predictable, confirmative ending possible.
like if it’s not a twist why are you trying to make it seem like there’s some fucking twist there was NEVER a twist ANYWHERE????? that’s goddamn queerbait!!

i think what really gets me is they wrote a fucking tragic ending but presented it as a happy one. it seems clear to me they wrote mike as a closeted gay man. even till the very end, there is subtext about mike and about byler. but will ends up in a bar with a random boy and mike ends up alone in his room with the painting from will on the wall. he talks about a story he can never tell and cries putting his binder next to will's. he never said i love you back to his girlfriend before she died. it's fucking tragic, but they couldn't even commit to that. it's wrapped up in looking like a happy ending to everyone but the queer people who devoted our time, love, and attention to their story. we are left devastated in a way nobody else can see, as if that doesn't already happen to queer people enough.
robin & vickie erasure, steve & jonathan gay jokes, will’s love for mike being reduced to a little crush… this show used to be about outcasts.
