A mysterious East German dub of episode 1 for Squirrel and Hedgehog has been found! The story behind its discovery is quite interesting, so I'll copy paste the description here:
"I recently rescued a rare 35mm theatrical print of the North Korean animated series "Squirrel and Hedgehog" (Original: 다람이와 고슴도치 / Geumsaegi). This reel was found in a basement in Germany, and contains the lost German theatrical dub produced for East Germany (GDR/DDR) in the 1980s. Eichhörnchen und Igel schützen ihre Heimat (다람이와 고슴도치) Source: 35mm Acetate Print (Theatrical) Distribution: Progress Film-Verleih (GDR) Dubbing Studio DEFA Studio for Synchronisation"
The fact this exists opens up so many questions. For example, why was this made? Did other countries around the time get dubs as well? Did they do episodes 3-4? Does it perhaps have a version of the old title card for episode 1 without the "part 1" at the bottom? I also find it interesting how Geumsaegi is called "Goldfarbener" a seemingly direct translation of his name (that being gold color) Hopefully they release the whole episode at some point!
have always wanted a German dub of Squirrel and Hedgehog! Now that I know it exists I am tweaking out!
