❝ if a blossom could pray before it opened, perhaps it would sound like her. ❞
she carries her gentleness like first bloom beneath morning mist — quiet, luminous, and far stronger than it first appears. she was made for the tender hour between blossom and breeze, where beauty is softest and therefore most difficult to forget.
yue has always loved jellyfish in a way other people rarely understand. where most see something strange, fragile, or dangerous, she sees a kind of quiet truth in them — soft-bodied things that drift with grace, glow in darkness, and still know how to sting when touched carelessly. she finds them beautiful not in spite of that duality, but because of it. to her, jellyfish feel sacred in the same way the sea itself does: delicate at first glance, ancient underneath, and never as defenseless as they appear.
within her personal grotto, she keeps many of them — different species gathered in moonlit pools and glass-clear chambers, drifting like living lanterns through her sanctuary. they are one of the few things she tends with a softness untouched by duty, watching them pulse through the water as though the sea had made small, luminous prayers and left them in her care.

i'm sitting here thinking . . . i want like a bitter exes thread with yuè . . . like picture her and another trying to stay cordial after their engagement is annulled . maybe it was political arrangement [ possibly curated by the tidebound council ] and they actually grew close , but everything fell apart when yuè chose to leave and search for her parent instead of going through with it . and potentially falls in love with another. now the other feels betrayed for a multitude of different reasons , so every conversation is polite on the surface but bitter underneath . they know exactly how to hurt each other and neither of them is fully over what happened .
i think since this is a prevalent piece in yue’s lore , so i need to talk about the dead current and how it works.
at its core, the dead current is a cursed underflow moving beneath all living seas — not a normal tide, but a spiritual one made from what the water was never meant to keep for so long. it began, as a wound in the natural order: the grief of shipwrecks, drowned cities, broken vows, ritual deaths, unfinished burials, and lost souls gathering over generations until remembrance itself curdled into something sentient. the sea is meant to hold memory, but not endlessly, and not without mercy. the dead current is what happens when memory has nowhere to go and sorrow is left to sink too deep for too long.
it does not move like ordinary water. it does not answer to moon, wind, or season, but to death, imbalance, and accumulated grief. it spreads through spiritually weakened waters first — old battle coasts, sacrificial sites, ruined shrines, burial trenches, ship graveyards, and places where divine law or sacred rite have broken down. from there, it infects surrounding tides, creating wrong currents, unnatural stillness, blackwater blooms, and rift current tears where the boundary between the living sea and the abyss begins to split open.
what it feeds on is not just death itself, but unresolved death. it grows stronger on sorrow left unnamed, bodies not returned, prayers not finished, vows broken at sea, and the emotional weight of those who were taken without closure. this is why it can swallow ships and crews so easily in the present — every new loss feeds the old hunger. every disappearance gives it more memory, more grief, more voice. in that sense, it behaves almost like a spiritual ecosystem of ruin: always consuming, always deepening, always trying to pull the living down into the same unfinished silence.
the effects are not only physical, but spiritual and psychological. waters touched by the dead current become heavy, cold, and wrong; marine life may grow hostile, sickly, or deformed; ghosts and drowned memories begin surfacing; sacred waters lose their purity; and those sensitive to spirit or tide may hear voices in shells, dreams, and still pools. over time, it reaches the mainland too — through blighted coasts, failed fisheries, vanished ships, and crews swallowed by currents that should not exist.
